So far we havent really seen much of Murph hunting the ball at the stoppages.
Watching the "stoppage" drill at training yesterday he didnt really get "inside" much and was more an option by hand for the guys winning the ball after the tapout.
When we drafted him I kept reading that he was an inside and outside mid.
He has the right physical attributes to win the ball in close with good core strength and pace over short distance.

Im wanting to know from our TAC watchers like Gilly,HBF and TGR how he was at the stoppages in junior football. Was he an extractor to a greater extent than he is now ?
Is he lacking a bit if confidence to go in and really fight for it in close on a regular basis ?

hopefully he wont have to play inside the packs this year...im sure hadley bentick army and co will be able to do that next year..murphy is such a good kick...why would u waste him just feeding out h/balls....i think it wil be a breakout year 4 him next year

Im not sure there is room for both Bentick and Hadley in the one team.

We have lots of outside mids and there is nothing wrong with your inside mids being classy too. Inside mids still get to use their foot skills.

Looking at the Hawks both Mitchell and Hodge are very "inside" and both use it very well by hand and foot.

If Murph improved his work in close it would definately benefit the team.

Murphy = exactly the same player as Cousins. That's the best way to describe what type of a player he will be.

He wont be you Kerr type that will hunt inside the pack, but will do so when needed and when the opportunity is there. We dont need him to have that type of a roll as his skills and decision making is much more valuable to us than him getting in and under and getting it out.

Who remembers Murph's first touch in AFL football?

He ran into some congestion at full speed directly to the looseball between the players, deft pickup and then went on to spin out of the congestion and was taken around the neck.

Based on that I wouldn't think that he is lacking the confidence at AFL level to go in and get his own ball, but rather a team balance/structural issue of utilzing his most superior abilities to the best advantage of the team.

By this rationale though, he still could have been more of a ball hunter prior to playing AFL and still not lack confidence to play this role at AFL level.

Good form Yowse... Keepin it real from New York City!

If I was to put a likeness to Murph it would be the great Harvey from Saint Kilda. Brilliant player and I can really see a lot of Murph in him both skill, dedication and maturity wise.

Never saw him as a junior TA. Like Gilly, I really only started watching the kids seriously in 2007.

Footydraft - Marc Murphy
Toured Ireland earlier this year with the U17 squad. Was effectively a walk up starter for the Vic Metro U18 side, and at Championships time he won the Larke Medal for the best player in Division 1, and finished clearly on top of any other player in clearances

1) Marc Murphy

Pure midfielder

– complete midfielder. Leadership. Played his best football at the Championships 2 years in a row. Very agile and pretty quick but most importantly football quick. Very good tackler. Best clearance player in the draft. Good handballer and does not fumble. Kicking is good but could be a little better. Good around goals. Used to getting tagged. Carried a bit of a leg injury towards the end of the season and into draft camp where he did not complete all the tests.
2.98 speed for the 20m and good testing in the agility. Blitzed when skill work was done. Very level headed and has the desire and attitude that will succeed at AFL level.
Light on his feet with how he runs and seems to glide and people seem to make the mistake that he is not overly quick when he actually is.
Needs to increase his body size and improve his endurance to round everything off.
The most likely player to play 200 games in this draft. Others will be more athletic but don’t think anyone is likely to be as effective.

One of Murphy's kicks which went wide of the target on Monday was a carbon copy of the kick that went out of bounds after he smothered Selwood's kick. Marc still kicks poorly on occasion like Mojo's profiles stated back in 2005, so it wouldn't hurt to do the extra sessions Walker and Carrazzo might be doing with Ratten to improve their kicking.

Judd would. ;)

Tx TG

I for one hopes he gets more involved in this area then

Gee, good work on doing so well in the 2006 BF Phantom Draft, top effort considering you werent really watching the kids at that stage

In 2006, I saw a few championship games and that was it. The rest of it was made up with quite a bit of reading. Still, pretty happy the '06 PD.

You must have accidentally picked up the 2005 unrevised version that says it is ok to rate slowish blokes under 175cm ;):)

Haha...

Coming from a guy that was so up and down about players, I just gave up trying to keep up. Some of Gillys gems this year:

Gaertner could go top 5 - didn't get drafted
Reid in the top 4 - Drafted at 35

And many favourites did he have this year? Too bloody many to keep up.
