Toast Quinton Narkle

I thought we saw the good, bad and frustrating from Narkle during the first half last night, and that after the good he just didn't really follow up with 2nd or 3rd efforts which we see from others and that's where he becomes frustrating

I then decided to watch him more closely to start the 3rd quarter, and the passage prior to Narkle kicking the opening goal, his efforts just shit me

• we got the first clearance of the quarter, and initially didn't give it to Narkle but then got the ball to him when he was free on the outside
• from the wing he kicks forward which wasn't a good kick off the boat, and there was no effort or intent from Narkle to follow the ball forward, instead he just watched the play from the wing
• the kick resulted in a turnover, Brisbane decide to go down the guts and there's Narkle still standing on his own out on the wing, no opponent within 20m of him and he didn't look interested in even making an effort to pick up an opponent

Yes we ultimately managed to force a turnover, work the ball forward with Smith making in range who then went short to Narkle (having found the energy to move forward from the wing)

It was good to see him go back & kick the goal, and loved seeing his teammates get around him - was hoping it would jump start his second half, but not sure that really happened

Hopefully he’s back soon and can get another few shots this year as he looked dangerous at the start of the 3rd…but geez he needs to find some consistency soon

I don’t rate him but hope he has a speedy recovery and gets back and gets one last crack.

I rate his talent but i watched him closely last night and i can see why he doesnt get picked..he has some nice vision in traffic but he jogs too much between contests, doesnt have enough body check on his opponent at stoppages and doesnt lay shepherds and do 1 %ers. If it doesnt change a lot in the next few weeks he will get delisted at years end.

That's not the annoying thing. That's the absolutely fanciful thing, which would fly in the face of almost the evidence assembled to this point.

He has got that - and some players havent got that trait

From along distance away from the club - my view - hes never been fit enough - hes got to get De Castella fit

Agree with you - he will be gone at the end of the year - if he only had Atkins tenacity - but he hasnt

Good to hear your analysis of his game. It's always nice to hear from those at the ground who have the chance to examine a particular player's game more closely than what's possible on tv or when you are just following the ball. I will say though, that it would be great if we did do that sometimes more often with players other than just those on the fringe. Often it seems like a bit of confirmation bias creeps in when we are looking for why players should be dropped instead of focusing on what the good players do when they don't have the ball. It may be a bit unfair to say the goal didn't jump start his second half when he had to leave the field with the injury in the 3rd qtr. Where he looks most at home is in the centre bounce reading the drop of the ball and using the ball cleverly through traffic. What limits him still is endurance to influence more contests around the ground but also maybe a bit of confidence at this level which, alas, can only come with a bit of continuity.

I can't think of many players who actually fit that bill at all. Of the young players who we have traded out/let go, the only one who'd walk into our team next week would be Lincoln McCarthy:

Mitch Brown - competent journeyman but not great.
Joel Hamling - limited, but gets a game in a weak backline at Freo.
Bundy Christensen - never the same player after 2013, retired at 29.
Jarrad Jansen - delisted by Brisbane.
Josh Walker - see Mitch Brown.
Josh Caddy - one brilliant half-season with the Tigers, otherwise good for two years, but form took a fat nosedive and will be delisted at end of contract. Not even 30 yet.
Shane Kersten - failed as a forward, then failed in defence and delisted.
Billie Smedts and Darcy Lang - both traded to Carlton, both done zero.
Nathan Vardy - played just one really good game at West Coast but it was a pretty important game. Retired at 30.
Lincoln McCarthy - he's the one I'd like back. He turned the corner last year and has been pretty good since.
George Horlin-Smith, Jordan Murdoch, Jackson Thurlow - all bombed in their second chance.

Startlingly long list of 'absolutely not much' there. And yet the myth continues that numerous players go on to become far better players after leaving Geelong.

Fogs and Chook the next two cabs off the rank, trying to break what looks to have become a very well-established pattern of significantly underwhelming from those who've been shown the door by the hoops.

The thing is I was assessing his football ability in a thread about that matter. No one is suggesting he's not liked but it has little to do with his on-field output or the matters under discussion.

The only ones I would regret are the guys who the club decided to play in a different position/role than what they were recruited at. They may have made it at their preferred position, but failed at the new one.

Anyway, Narkle has had the opportunities to demonstrate to the coaches that he can do what they need him to do. I'm sure they made it clear to him. Playing at the top level is a team effort, and a hole in the side will be exploited.

The second, third efforts and 1%s are much easier if you have the conditioning. Narkle definitely saves himself a bit. The only way players like Narkle can get AFL conditioning for the firsts is if they get games into him - in the firsts. The reserves is a different, lesser pressure. Narkle has never been one of the "annointed ones" who get games no matter what their return is. Parfitt was at the start. Now look at him.

There is only 18 spots on the field, and they can't give them all a run, all the time. Unfair, but that is the way it is.

And the interesting thing to note of the players on that list, McCarthy is one we had a contract in front of, that we wanted to keep and we can see why - it's not like we cast him aside & waited for a buyer

Interesting list. The problem is that only the loss of a couple of them have caused some heartache here. Even the loss of Hamling caused only a murmur and he's proven himself at not only at Freo but the Bullies. Think he has a premiership medallion to show for it.

Mumford, like T.Kelly, we wanted to keep. Varcoe, Pods, Chappy, Stevie J, J.Kelly, etc - all proved themselves first at the cats. I also heard that Ablett bloke went ok at the Suns after we'd let him go. Though I believe he was already some player.
