The memory of game day performances for young kids that got a crack through injury have a half life of about a month after the season concludes. So by end of February, we have a 1.5% recall of how that player went at AFL level.
You wouldn’t have Dowling best 22 would you ?

I think he’s about 4th ranked wing on our list currently

Max Keane Murray
Laird Worrell Hinge
Cumming Dawson Sholl
Rachele Tex ANB
Thilthorpe Fog Keays
1R ROB Soligo Rankine
I/C Nankervis Peatling M Crouch Curtin
Sub Draper
Emergencies Taylor Butts T Murray Pedlar

Yes I’m horrified debuting Draper sub and can potentially swap with Curtin but in potential hot weather with round 1 generally being red hot tempo unleashing him with 40 mins to go might be an absolute weapon

Bond … he’s not far off playing, should be an emergency and will play if max is injured

Laird would want to play well first 3 weeks

Depends how you want to use your wings, we had Crouch play there a couple of times. Obviously his job wasn’t to tear up and down the ground acting as a link man and forward distributor.

Yep maybe but don’t think he should get another contract after 2026 ?

He should finish on a high next 2 seasons

I would have told him he’s injury cover at the end of last season and hoped to trade him for a 3rd. Contending teams don’t have intensity free stat padders.

I’d have him ahead of Murphy in any role on the ground. But he’s not quite best 22, nor is Taylor, there’s a few in a jam with them just outside it.

I was keen on a trade while worth something too

I think he can play a role but jury is out next few weeks

Don’t think he’s in competition with
Murphy , Taylor is more versatile forward and inside mid

Dowling at this stage is a wing , half forward . I’d have him more in comp with Curtin and the first choice wings

I don’t want to use my wings like that and want to play guys like Peatling to their strengths

Dawson can spend some time on wing as it’s playing to his strengths but he starts in centre square for mine , other wings I have are Cumming Sholl Jones Curtin (at times ) and Dowling . Cumming and Sholl get first crack and should be a decent combo

After the trials
F Rachele Walker Fogarty
HF Keays Thilthorpe Neal-Bullen
C Dawson Peatling Sholl
HB Hinge Murray Michalanney
B Worrell Keane Laird
R O'Brien Soligo Rankine
I Crouch Curtin Cumming Nankervis Draper
Good side!
I would swap Bond in for Laird as my only change.

Based on the trial game lineup, and not forgetting we can’t use the ‘full game’ excuse, Murphy is ahead of both Dowling and Taylor for any forward spot that opens up. Jones appears to be next up if we lose a wingman.

We don’t select for fun, we’ve run the same methodology for years. The 3 players that could have been subbed in on Thursday night that went and played the SANFL trial are the next guys in the selection order.

So looking at our R1 side in 2024 which lost to GC by a goal vs the likely R1 side in 2025, there will probably be 10 changes. And it’s hard to argue that all of them aren’t upgrades.

2024 R1 Side
FF: Gollant Fogarty Burgess
HF: Rachele Rankine Keays
C: Sholl Dawson Jones
HB: Milera Borlase Michalanney
FB: Smith Butts Worrell
R: O’Brien Laird Berry

S: Soligo

2025 R1 Side

HF: Rachele Rankine Keays
C: Sholl Dawson Cumming
HB: Nank Murray Michalanney
FB: Laird Keane Worrell
R: O’Brien Crouch Soligo
I: Hinge Draper ANB Peatling

Laird needs to embrace the half back role if he's to succeed there

If he becomes bitter old man, angry to have been punted from the midfield rotation, getting peeved off at kids' goal celebrations, in Nicks' office every 5 minutes asking what he needs to do to get back his midfield spot etc then he'll be terrible.

He could have an absolute picnic at half back. Play on the opposition's Murphy equivalent. Run off at will. Handball receives up the ying yang. More uncontested ball, aid his longevity.

But I get the feeling that he's cracked the shits and is playing angry

Yep Dowling is not in the same group he’s the depth for wing role and Curtin role

Not competing with Murphy at all

Agree Re Chayce , he’s next in line for wing

Has to rediscover his play on edge rookie list battler attitude and he can help the side

If not I fear he won’t last

I’ll never understand the reticence to debut a player as sub. Firstly, if that’s the only spot available that weekend he’d chew your arm off to get it. Secondly, it allows them to ease into the game through the warmup knowing they’ve got a bit of time before they’re out there. Then there’s the benefit of being that bit more fresh than 44 others.

Ever since Mackay boohood saying ‘sub is hard’, numerous posters here have thought it some kind of insurmountable challenge. It was just a whinge because he felt it beneath his station and he couldn’t rack up a dozen touches in a quarter and a half like the Lyons’ of the world.

Why isn’t he competing with Murphy? He’d be a better in every aspect in any role you want to play Murphy in.

You had me in the first half.

Murphy is in the small forwards ball hunter players and way down pecking order

Dowling is with outside mids and endurance type high forwards and is similarly down pecking order in that bunch

Pedlar Taylor etc in the group with Murphy
