I know this is tantamount to sacrilege - but to me the last couple of years haven't been as kind to Maxwell.

Maybe he's just more honest than he used to be, but he seems a lot more dismissive of visiting sides than he used to be and a bit less knowledgeable.

Yeah agree, i thought his time should have been up in the last round of redundancies.

Mick Molloy's best work on radio was when he laughed at Tony Martin, who was the funny one.

Cricket commentary? No thanks.
Tony Martin is a great comic writer, his two books are laugh out loud funny.

The reasons why ABC Grandstand is better than the Triple M/3AW coverage of international cricket in Australia is-1) 60+ years covering Test cricket as opposed to 3AW who have restarted their coverage after a long absence; 2) Australia-wide broadcast; 3) Having international commentators on their radio coverage such as Jonathan Agnew (England), Harsha Bhogle (India) and Bryan Waddle (NZ).

Love MMM for the footy so have tuned in for the cricket and have not been disappointed. Jules Schiller comes up with some gold at times, and Merv Hughes has been an absolute crackup! Isha Guha is definitely a good talent too.

I wanted to put this somewhere, and since it was told on radio....

Darren Berry told this story today on SEN:

I think it was 2002. Berry was at the MCG during an ODI, hosting a corporate function. He was a little nervous, because he was new to the caper, so he had a couple of beers. After his short spot of stage, he had a couple more beers, then had a couple of glasses of wine with dinner.

Not long after, Shane Warne dislocated his shoulder on the field and went off, so Berry went to the rooms to see how his Vic buddy was. The 12th man obviously went out to field, and there was no one around to take out the drinks, so Berry was asked to suit up to run out the Gatorade.

Before he had a chance to do so, Brett Lee had to come off for a few minutes, so Chuckles Berry had to go out to field, but there was a small problem: he was half-pissed. :D He decided not to tell anyone, because he wanted to get on the field for Australia.

When he got out there, Ricky Ponting asked him: "You're a keeper; where should you field?
Berry replied: "I dunno, I'm pissed"

He was only on the field for one over and didn't touch the ball.

Ha :p
Ricky was the captain in 2002?

Does any radio station do the BBL?

Macquarie covers all the games... They can all be streamed on cricket.com.au/CA live app, and matches where the local teams are playing can be heard on the actual radio (eg all stars/renegades matches are on 3AW, as mentioned)

Alison isn't bad but way overused. Gerard must be in charge of scheduling for the commentary.

Something going on with those two for sure....

Not really sure why a taxpayer funded broadcaster requires to hire an os caller tbh. It's normal to have one from the opposing side but having Mitchell makes no sense whatsoever. She is hardly Blowers or Agnew. Surely such a prestigious role (filling in for JM) could have been filled by a local?

Triple M got a bad review from this bloke, Michael Blummell. I dunno if he's a journo or just a 'dude' like us. I gather that The Roar is similar to Metacritic, where readers submit reviews.

"I was stunned by how unpolished and awkward the broadcast was. Despite recruiting some big names, it seemed as though the station had opted for a quantity over quality approach that lead to some strange combinations of commentators throughout the day.

Kerry O’Keeffe’s return to radio got off to a rough start as he was forced into an overcrowded commentary box with a group of people that he clearly did not know. Instead of giving him space to work his magic, Triple M forced him into a team of underdeveloped talent that kept getting in his way.

James Brayshaw seemed frustrated at times as his teammates talked over the top of him while he tried to hold things together. It became clear early on that the usual ‘boys club’ banter that has lead to some strong ratings for Triple M’s AFL coverage required some established friendships prior to the show hitting the air.

But it wasn’t all bad. There were some moments of insight in between the shouts of ‘Aw gee’ and ‘bang’, particularly when former Australian wicketkeeper Brad Haddin was able to share some stories from his recent playing days. The conversations about Brett Lee’s Bollywood career were less engaging.
Providing a platform for former English women’s cricket player Isa Guha was also a nice change from the regular male voices that dominate the airwaves over the summer.

It’s clear that some quick changes will need to be made in order to allow those who know the game to actually share their knowledge with the listeners.
The in-house comedic talent (Jules Schiller, Lawrence Mooney and Gus Worland) needs to go. And someone needs to set Kerry up so that he can spin a few more yarns to entertain us during the long days of Test cricket.

Overall I give Triple Ms first day of Test cricket a D+, but it was nice to hear something a little bit different. All they need to do now is go back to what’s worked for them before and assemble some commentary teams that actually know each other.
The M's changed things already by the Melbourne test, only 3 in the box now.
Skull is gold and knows he can get away with more than on the ABC, Bing has been good, Sids was good in Melbourne. I'm not overly fond of Gus Worland, but Isa Guha has been the find of the summer for me, she is brilliant and already has great chemistry with Skull in particular

Not the same type of broadcast as ABC, but they aren't trying to be either

She's a freelancer so it's not even a BBC/ABC love in. There just seems to be a lack of depth with the ABC team now and it's still the best which says a lot.

It's called PC now days as you apparently need a female broadcaster

Triple M ****s cricket like it does footy. They should do big bash for the uncouth only.

Just because you think you are too smart for it doesn't mean others don't find MMM style commentary entertaining
ABC grand stand could put a glass eye to sleep

Always thought Ol' Spanky was a bit of a phoney, stuck in a time when cricket was for tossers.

Bogle / O'Keefe is as close to perfection as I've ever heard in cricket commentary though.

Classic one was when Bogle challenged O keefe to eat a chilli on air (while Australia had clarke and hussey making double tons at SCG vs India)
