Bar Up
The prequels add nothing. They are objectively shit movies. The miracle of nostalgia means they aren't totally without value for people like me who grew up on them.I’ll give you my view on watching the films from a non-buff angle.
So I watched Star Wars more or less for the first time about six months ago. I had seen the original trilogy and episode 1 when I was younger but it wasn’t really my thing and I didn’t really remember much from it, though I did know a few of the well known big twists.
I watched it in release order, but upon reflection I wish I’d watched it in chronological order. I think a few more things would have made sense from a “first time viewer” POV. I reckon there is two main reasons to watch in release order - replicating the experience of those who watched them as they came out; and maintain certain surprises that would otherwise be given away by the prequels. Given the length of time the movies have been out and how well known certain elements are in wider pop culture though, I would say there is a good chance these surprises are already well known.
I've spent more than enough time ( more than 5 minutes) arguing about Star Wars on the internet so I already regret entering this conversation. I have a lot of love for Star Wars but almost everything made related to Star Wars after the 80s is pretty bad.
