I think media orgs would rather have the debate, black vs cop, than the occupy movement, 1% vs the rest.

At least with the former, the solution is ‘law and order’.. I can’t see either party from the major institutions in the US deviating from that message.
having Biden and Kamla, as opposition, kind of proves a point.

Yeah that’s what it’s really about. The rich 1% just keep accumulating wealth and the gap grows wider (as seen by the billionaires net growth this year). It’s also interesting that the stock market is doing well, another sign that the 1% are still crushing it.

It’s also interesting you brought up the romans, back in the day if there was civil unrest, the romans would call for the games for 30/100days. During that time the people would be distracted and any momentum the protest movement had would be gone..

I wonder what the romans would do if the gladiators decided to take a knee, or simply decide ‘nah, not today’... interesting times

They’d feed them to lions

“Give them bread and circuses”
Don’t worry, there’s an intergalactic alliance of good aliens(insert RNC, DNC, China, etc here)
who are fighting an evil kabal, they’re just waiting to reveal themselves to the world.. all you have to do is ‘nothing’ and trust the process.. sound familiar

Frankly black people don't give a sh*t anymore what white people think about this.

Even now cops in the US are still members of the KKK (once upon a time they were almost the same organisation) and every year heaps of them are sacked for affiliations with white supremacist and other racial hate groups.

Why are people like you so desperate to pretend this sort of racism isn't entrenched (in both our societies?)

People like me? Who the **** do you think you are.

Of course there is an issue. But as is always the case, only one side of the problem is ever seen.

You know what they would do.

They would execute the Gladiators, reimburse their owners, then piss off to war with the Parthians to restock the treasury.

Problem solved :thumbsu:

Unfortunately there isn’t a further breakdown on what ethnicity the police officers were that shot so it’s impossible to say that it’s purely white police that shoot black criminals.

"Based on information from more than two million 911 calls in two US cities... white officers dispatched to Black neighbourhoods fired their guns five times as often as Black officers dispatched for similar calls to the same neighbourhoods'"

Maybe the cops were afraid Jacob Blake had a gun. I don't know. But it doesn't justify shooting him in the back seven times, with his 3 children right there in the car witnessing. Frankly nothing justifies that. It's attempted murder.

Should Blake have not walked away? Should he have let the cops take him down and not resist? I dunno. Maybe ask George Floyd that question.

Meanwhile, in the same state, white guys can protest pandemic response efforsts with assault rifles.

They shot Blake because he was Black. This continued making excuses for the criminal behaviour of white cops against Black men (and women) is bizarre, and disheartening. It also prevents us from moving forward and finding solutions to the problem. But then that would mean change, and we all know about change. That's where the fear is. If we want to talk about fear on here, that's what we need to look at.
You are amazing to me Sopwiths. In a bizzare and disheartening way. You undertook further education, nailed it, and now professionally promote yourself as attributing outcomes to more factors than even the very complicated orthodoxy of your fields, yet in this sphere you want to be all tunnel visioned and demand that the "other" side be as well. You do this despite all evidence being that they will not get onboard. I am very curious, why? Seems to me it just creates a conflict where otherwise there could be agreement and cooperation.

I think data also finds that black and hispanic cops are more likely to shoot and kill black and hispanic people than white cops are. So whereas white cops draw, black and hispanic cops shoot and kill. This isn't a loaded comment, purely painting the picture.

To my untrained eyes the primary issues are and continue to be the economic disparity across groups and the poor training and funding of police forces. More poor people get shot than wealthy, more poor people live in neighbourhoods where crime is rife than rich people, more poor people suffer the effects of substance abuse than wealthy, so more poorly trained and funded cops are called to address issues in poor areas than wealthy. And its more likely that black and hispanic people are poor than white. Add in the gun culture and whaddaya know, we got a powder keg.

That's not saying that there ain't racist KKK members in police forces. Of course there are. But I do not think that this is the main issue at play.

Not sure what my education or "fields" (whatever that means, I don't know) have to do with anything here. TPA wanted a statistic-based view of things, so we've had a look at some stats. You can make of the stats what you will, doesn't really matter. Say whatever you want about me, or think it, or imagine it, or be amazed or disheartened or whatever you like. It doesn't matter. Today is a great day, and I am over the moon about what's happening right now. Change is happening. 2020 is a massive year. And we're only just getting started.

So go ahead, rain on the parade all you like. Or try. Call me crazy. It's all good! Who cares? I just want to give every single player and coach and team who have decided to boycott games a giant hug. They are legends, every single one of them. Absolute legends.

It doesn't matter. Today is a great day. Love is going to win in the end.

Nice. I agree that your best move was to not even try to explain your inconsistency with reason. Feels rule, not sarcasm, and you feel good like this. :thumbsu:

This NBA Story is massive. Boycott in the middle of the playoffs wowee.

Even bigger now with the Lakers and Clippers boycotting the rest of the season. That’s like Geelong/Richmond and West Coast boycotting the rest of the season with a couple of games remaining in the regular season.

The board of owners will be meeting tomorrow and the player boycott is to pressure them to use any/all political influence the owners have to force change.

Apparently that isnt finalised yet. About time the owners got the fire lit under them.

Japanese tennis star Naomi Osaka has pulled out of a major tennis tournament in New York in a protest over the police shooting of Jacob Blake.

"As a black woman I feel as though there are much more important matters at hand that need immediate attention, rather than watching me play tennis," Osaka wrote on Twitter.

The ATP tournament has now been suspended for Thursday.

Mr Blake, who was black and unarmed, was shot in the back by police.

His shooting on Sunday in Kenosha, Wisconsin, sparked a wave of protests, some of which have turned violent, and a growing boycott by sports stars.

Protests have also spread to a number of other US cities, including Portland, Oregon and in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where the police killing of unarmed black man George Floyd in May sparked Black Lives Matter protests across the US and globally.

Organisers of the WTA Western & Southern Open in New York have said the tournament will be suspended until Friday.

"As a sport, tennis is collectively taking a stance against racial inequality and social injustice that once again has been thrust to the forefront in the United States," the statement said.
