Just listen, and if you need to ask a question sound interested, not unsure. If it is treated like a dumb question try to smile and imply you were getting ahead of yourself thinking it was part of a larger, more complex, system. Don’t say this, of course, then ask for tips on what they did to adapt in their first few shifts.

Most people training you in hospitality want you to do well so it reflects well on them. Or it will reduce their workload if they are understaffed. Everyone knows how hard it is when you start out, so just take a breath and you will be ok.

You’ll be fine, you are not a stupid person Ligma , you’ll pick it up quickly
Remain attentive, ask and repeat back what they have said (helps for me) and you’ll be grand
Also, personal experience this friers are f###ing hot so be careful

Just as a random side note, a good mate of mine always tells a story about something that happened at a 5 star hotel, with restaurants, that he worked at.
He came in for the morning shift and the hotel had just turfed $20k plus of food from the cool rooms. Turned out that one of the apprentice cooks overnight had been marking down the cool room temperature every hour but didn’t understand the reason why, so as it went up to about 20 degrees just kept marking it down.
Seems like a good example of understanding why you do something, not just what to do.

My wife and I welcomed our second into the world on Monday. Some around here know that he was diagnosed with a very serious congenital heart condition at the 12 week scan. It’s been a stressful 6 months of extra scans and doctor’s appointments, and lockdowns have just exacerbated that stress. It will be a stressful few years as he goes through treatment and surgeries - the first operation will be in 3-4 weeks. But for now, he is as healthy as we ever could have hoped (and a big boy at 4.1kg even coming a week early). Go Roos.
