In Silicon Valley it’s pretty standard for meals (not just lunch) to be supplied.
It’s a ridiculous waste of company money.

They supply meals, coffee, etc. to encourage their staff to basically live at the office. They've done the math. It’s a ridiculous waste of company money.

Believe me or don't believe me, your choice, but HEAPS of silicone valley feed their staff for the reason I mention, and heaps of big private firms do it here as well, for the same reason. I've only ever really associated staff free lunches with big private firms tbh.Up till now most of them were working from home. The lunches were costing Twitter $400 USD per head.
Theres a good reason that once companies go private they cut all those perks.
Back in the day you couldn’t go to a surf beach without a telecom van parked there. The SEC was just as bad. They used to put on full lunches, like roasts everyday.

Boomers were born before 1965 but its an attitude so they could well be.They aren’t even 50 yet so they ain’t boomers![]()
Nah, I don't really know what twitter is like or care (not trying to be rude) what their days are like. I haven't even followed whatever's happening. Just supporting blackshadow point that free meals are common in Silicon Valley and generally, it's not because it's a money sink. When they weighed up the tax deductions, employability (workforces full of young, single out of home people with few life skills and a lot of money, and competitive drive, free cafe meals sounds appealing), extra hours they extract, keeping them on site and available to answer questions, having a cafe to feed clients so they're more likely to come on site and network, waiters coming around to meeting rooms, etc. they worked out it was the opposite of a money sink, which is why they took it up.I believe you. I spose it comes down to how much they’re spending on them. Like a ham & cheese sandwich and a half hour break you don’t get paid for Vrs a full spread and knocking off at 4:30.
Did you see the viral video of the chick that talks about her day working at Twitter…or might have been Meta? It’s beyond absurd.

Wouldn't work (and by work I mean make clients money) for the average Joe's company, but for that industry, it does.

The convo had moved to whether or not it was common and whether it was a waste of company money or not. I explained why so many companies have taken it up in our horribly dystopian world. All of those things, particularly the wine on tap, indicate a company that wants their employees at the office as long as humanly possible. Breakfast through to after-work drinks. The conversation is about Twitter though. It looks like the video has been removed. It’s absolutely ridiculous. She basically does nothing. Smoothy on arrival, whatever you want for lunch, I mean seafood to roasts, no doubt they cater for vegans and every other dietary need. Wine literally on tap, meditation room, chill on a banana lounge on the roof garden. It’s wild.

Twitter 'day in a life' video indicates lots of downtime, very little actual work | Blaze Media
A female Twitter employee shared a video that ostensibly gives viewers a glimpse of a typical day at the Twitter office. But rather than convince people that, once he takes over, Elon Musk should retain the current staffing levels and culture that Twitter has, the video instead suggests that...www.theblaze.com

As for videos put out about how fun and laid back X workplace is, I trust none of it.
It's just a video of one person and I've seen plenty of places with horribly bad work-life balances pump out promo videos that look like that. The conversation is about Twitter though. I get that it can be done cynically to get more work out of employees, but there comes a point where it goes the other way, and it definitely went the other way at Twitter.

Yeah it looks good on paper but when you see a bunch of soulless husks still there at 1am the grass does not look much greener. I couldn't do it!Im just a carpenter. Ive never seen anything like it. We work and only sit down twice a day, or once depending on who you’re working with. I don’t take a break at all now that I have my own business, but that’s only when I’m on my own.
The closest would be a fit out we did for the Deutsche Bank office at 333 Collins Street. Even just being in that building is a pretty big deal. They had a bar and a chill out room. No doubt everyone are on salaries and work extreme long hours.
In that video above Graeber makes the very good point that this is what happened in the USSR.The convo had moved to whether or not it was common and whether it was a waste of company money or not. I explained why so many companies have taken it up in our horribly dystopian world.

Agreed mate. Our productive potential has skyrocketed over the past century, yet the average person works more (pointless) hours than ever.In that video above Graeber makes the very good point that this is what happened in the USSR.
Most of these jobs are pointless admin and management jobs.
Basically we have an economy based on bullshit jobs because if people stopped working and started thinking for themselves then the whole thing would have to change and ... puritanical bullshit like the protestant work ethic.
* all people do real, important jobs like building houses, growing weed or tending the sick etc etc. To many over educated, unnecessary people in the world these days.
This was very foreseeable. A right wing billionaire who’s fallen up his entire life with a pedo father is finding posting ******* memes doesn’t work on people who aren’t sychophants.
He walked in expecting lefties. No it’s a corporation that wants money. And his band of racist edge lords aren’t attractive to advertisers.
He’s learning this now.
