I agree however sledging didn't cause the death and, at least going by what's being reported, there's been way too much focus on the sledging.
I think that's what gets me. It was tragic and preventable, and I understand that they need to investigate how it happened and why it happened and make sure it doesn't happen again. But I hate that it's all about what someone said and essentially whether it was murder? Maybe it's the media making drama out of it for their news broadcasts, I don't know. I liked the way the players all got around each other and around Hughes' family at the time, the tributes they made afterwards and that they added the helmet guards and so forth (I think that was voluntary, and perhaps that needs to be made a rule?). Banning bouncers on Australian soil doesn't help our national team playing England in England though – and I still think our players are haunted by it.

I don't think helmets are a requirement in the first place are they? Maybe the rule has changed but I'm sure that (at least in test cricket) they sometimes play without the helmet for a bit.

Helmets are definitely not mandatory at international level, but unless you're Viv Richards who like bouncers so he could score quickly and treated them as such, it's generally a wise idea to wear a helmet.

As I said on the cricket board, the focus should be on how helmets can be improved and if the medical response when the incident occurred could be improved. Not that it would have saved his life, mind you- he was gone the minute he sustained the injury he did.

The questioning about sledging is an utter red herring and serves only to bring up the pain again for people like Bollinger and Haddin. Even if Bollinger did say he was going to kill him, he didn't mean it. That doesn't make the sledge okay, it's rank and should not happen, but it also contributed not one iota towards the tragedy that occurred. Crude sledges, unfortunately, fly on the cricket field all the time but people don't die as a result.

I find this idea of them forensically examining the play ball-by-ball in the lead up to the fatal delivery particularly unsavoury. Exactly what picture are they trying to paint?

It was a freak accident. And the likes of Abbott, Warner, Haddin, Bollinger and everyone else playing that day will be haunted by the memory of it for the rest of their lives. Hell, the memory of how Phil fell face first onto the pitch with that sickening thud still makes me feel ill and I wasn't even there.

This shit does not help them at all.

That's quality mate. The way its worded provokes thought rather than shoves opinion down the readers throat and I think that's something most writers should strive for (unless you're an opinion piece columnist)
