While it's easy to give minority groups a kicking, the major parties are even more to blame, the role of the Public Service has been completely changed by successive LIB/NAT Governments. The role they used to play was frank and fearless advice to Government, to use their decades of experience to help Government work out what could or couldn't be done.

We have all heard the criticism, too much red tape, too unwieldy and those criticisms have been valid, understand though the reasons why, red tape is there because people are corrupt and they corrupt the red tape process as well, but the red tape is meant to be there to stop corruption. It's unwieldy because it's meant to be, rational well thought out decisions need to be reviewed and that takes time.

The Public Service have become "the problem", when it should be the answer, but we have lost generations of institutional memory and anyone trying to fight for them becomes part of a deep state conspiracy.

Where we are now is something different, the Public service isn't there for advice it's there to implement Government Policy unquestioned, just before Xmas, Dec 5, the Secretary for the Dept of Environment and Energy, became the Secretary for the Dept of Industry, Science, Energy and Resources. A new Dept. of Agriculture, Water and Environment was formed. Watch any fire chief any spokesman for the a Gov. service in this period and they will not talk about climate change nor will they have anything to say about, readiness to fight fires, equipment, trainer, staff levels. Nor will you hear any NGO criticise Government; they found out under Howard that any criticism of Government or Legislation meant that the NGO lost their funding completely, criticise Government and they don't exist for much longer.

For decades now we've lived with a "Summer Crew", they're not there to fight fires, they're there to keep tracks open, to help manage, but they're not there to understand the forest, They don't have to be paid sick pay, holiday pay, they work short term contracts, sure there are some old soaks amongst them but generally they're the university aged students of local farmers and Environmental Studies students getting some real world experience. We have it this way because it's cheaper, because these people have no weight when it comes to questioning policy, the people above them, even when they know what they are doing is wrong, they know that to question or kick up a fuss means either the end of their career or the end of their job completely and that's even more effective with Summer Crew.

Go back to the Kennett years at state level and a blanket unquestionable 10% cut to the Dept. of Environment, (Marie Tehan didn't even try to fight it, offering to cut deeper) and the Dept. of Human Services. Think on the Dept. of Human Services that money was taken out of Psychiatric Care, a cousin of mine was released out of care into his father's custody and promptly burned his Dad's uninsured house down, at the same time there was a massive increase in stabbings, bashings and fires, just the obvious result of putting thousands of people of really questionable sanity out on the streets without the monitoring of medication.

The Labor Party isn't safe here either, they don't fight it because it can't be fought, it's sold to us as tax relief, lower taxes, better tax returns, bigger super, streamlined government. Even if the Lib/Nats bring it in Labour rolls with it because no one can sell higher taxes. If you really want to blame a political party give the Nats a kicking, these are the seats they stand in, win and hold for generations, they stand by and sell their own voters down the drain so that they can have a share of power, they can get the thrill of being important. They make sure that money isn't spent, country people keep voting for them and they keep getting financial support from Agribusiness and Mining.

The real blame though rests with us, we vote for these governments, we make choices about the reasons why we vote for them, we don't care about the detail, we don't read the fine print, we don't care what it means for other people, we vote on personality, how good looking someone is, how genuine they are, what it means for our back pocket. It's a damned sight easier to believe than to think, it's a damned sight easier to hate than to try and understand. We voted for the governments of all persuasions that have got it wrong for decades.

obviously we've got them too, how many are ex politicians, advisors, department heads, staffers and not a single one working for the voters, all of them working for the back pockets of rich individuals, corporations and foreign governments. Snouts in the trough? They're sitting in the damn thing and wallowing.

Great. 9 out of 10 have brains and common sense. 👌

As above, sorry but a few on here are way out of touch with the mainstream thought. They may be silent most the time but they are the majority.

You do know they only have a slim majority yeah? If the sold out Nationals weren't willing to be the Libs bitch, then they wouldn't have a government. If Labor and Greens didn't steal each others votes they would have won. Silent majority is like a small band of swing voters. In the US Trump lost the popular vote but their electoral system gives states unequal representation for population.

If you read to the bottom of the page of this article it covers some disturbing government interference.A lot of public servants are directed and with their slashing of jobs no-one speak out against the governments bad behaviour. They don't want federal ICAC because we wouldn't have a parliament.

How morally bankrupt must you be to release an ad spruiking your belated response to a crisis which has killed many people and left hundreds possibly thousands homeless and then set it to a tinny Casio ringtone. FMD what have we done to warrant such s*** politicians.

This is closer to the truth.

Liberals...only in it for themselves.

Yep plenty both sides .....not only that they keep their pension which is on avg $1000 per day .
Unlimited Air Travel on Qantas within Australia .
Then get earner as a Lobbyist.

To be honest having dealt with both sides professionally they are pricks.

Tell you the greatest number of complaints we got from their PA’s were usually about.

That they did receive Qantas Frequent Flyer points for Travel Payed for by the Taxpayer.

They that they never got an upgraded Suite from Hotel because they are politicians again paid by
Taxpayer.

Cant believe QLD were the reason this mob is in office. Not just SM, the entire history of the party has barely ever done anything for the people.

He doesn't give a shit, he's just after votes for the next election. Ad campagins and parading around local towns after his holiday pretending like he cares. It's sickening.

BTW. If you want to help, contact the Salvos, Red Cross, or Givit. Check their FB pages and those of relevant local governments. Things such as clothing, tents, linen, food (non perishable) , money etc. are welcome. Don't come down unannounced as you'll probably get turned away. Unfortunately there are a lot of "rubber neckers", voyeurs and creeps who want to see the devastation first hand. They're only putting themselves and others in danger.

If you can help with animal rescue and care, contact the RSPCA. The effect on local wildlife has been devastating.

I hope you can help. The locals need it. My place is relatively safe at Paynesville, as Bairnsdale provides a natural fire break.

The Prince's Highway is closed to traffic from East Bairnsdale. Every town beyond that point has been pretty much abandoned. It's drizzling lightly atm. I hope the rain keeps coming.
I will correct you there, the Salvos and Red Cross are urging people to make donations instead. They are getting swamped with so much stuff they are struggling to manage it all. Obviously it's a good thing but they cant keep up.

He is Murdoch's puppet, you are right, I'm preparing for it. Praying the people of this country finally see through the propaganda. If there's one good thing to come out of this disaster it is him getting turfed and people actually taking the election seriously. Vote for the policy not the party for once.

In absolute awe in the way the bush communities are helping one another given my $ to Koala Foundation.

I am European but always had a great sense of pride living my life in a country where people have each others backs when their backs are against it.

Probably not going to change any opinions but this is a very easy to understand video on carbon in the atmosphere.

It's great that you are volunteering to help those in desperate trouble; more power to all of you helping. However, the rest of the rant is a bit unnecessary, no?

Be safe anyway.
He is gone for three weeks that's one of the worst posts I've seen on this forum absolutely embarrassing stuff he should be ashamed of himself and the way he continually treats others on here. You shouldn't have to put up with that mate you are a well respected member of this forum. Don't take it personally.

So you're threatening me with assault because you don't agree with what I've said and have no valid counterargument? Typical.

That's alright though mate so long as they come 1 or 2 at a time I'm not to worried. I doubt they've fought a kickboxer before.

You really don't see just how hypocritical you are, do you? I'm honestly astounded at how capable you are of compartmentalising. I haven't name called anything past calling you a boomer. Which you act like.

Maybe you should come up here to Monash Clayton mate. Can't guarantee your physical safety though. You probably won't anyway though, too much risk of learning something right?
I wouldn't worry, I doubt he is even there. Continually pontificating over what a good deed he is doing. If so, great, but I highly doubt it's the truth. Amidst arguably the worst bushfires in our countries history he finds more than enough time to get on a football forum and verbally threaten and abuse you and others.

People need to really help and donate now to this national disaster. The politics, climate change stuff and PM bashing need to stop also. Its run its course. Now is not that time.

I'm proud that Australia has come together on a lot of fronts. I think this will make our beautiful country much stronger.

Lastly, although its slightly political it would be nice to have more help off other countries going forward now. Only NZ, Canada and the US have sent firefighters to us so far (from what I know). Its all I would expect off close allies but we need more help. We have been there for so many countries during their wars and national disasters since our country was founded.
