I’m planning on taking a break from posting for a while, it has nothing to do with this thread or bigfooty.

Both knees and at least my left hip are shot so I need to devote more time to finding ways of keeping fit, getting some exercise and visiting the physiotherapist before I even consider replacement surgery. Checking the iPad dozens of times a day to keep up with bigfooty just gives me an excuse not to do the things I should.

My eldest daughter is planning her wedding for around this time next year so I have some added incentive. Best wishes to everyone I hope you all have a good year and the mighty saints have a breakout year.

Good work. This joint is half full of s**t but still fun to visit sometimes.

What can you read that isn’t full of garbage, opinion pieces dripping in vitriol etc.

I can’t remember the last time I read the sun and I just scan the age headlines online these days, it was probably back when I had them on subscription for the kids.

Seriously is there any source you would trust at face value these days without fact checking?.
Alan Austin and Michael West do consistently accurate investigative journalism.

the Herald Sun was shockingly biased though. I agree there are few unbiased journalists left but Murdoch is not even pretending any more. It’s so far from the way it’s reported anywhere else and with an overriding sense of propaganda.

Everyone at work has masks on today. The smoke has got into the factory.

Im in Torquay and it’s so smoky it looks overcast and gets worse at night.

I read the Herald Sun for the first time in years yesterday. I have realised that you aren’t ignorant, you’re just indoctrinated. It’s the most unbalanced nonsense newspaper I have seen outside of England. That is the only voice in most states. It read straight from the Johnnyray playbook, all positive spin on the fires and blaming the greens when it’s not. It’s insane.

Same occurs in Queensland. We have the Courier Mail. It's a right wing rag that has degenerated to utter trash.
That Herald Sun question is even more appropriate for the Courier Mail. They are only mildly acquainted with the truth.

I have been so appalled by the media here in Australia in recent times. I have cancelled Foxtel, I don't buy newspapers any more and I have stopped watching the commercial TV stations. The right wing bias is immense and overwhelming. I despair at ever having a fair election while the media are so biased.

Whatever "doomer". Disappointing, to say the least. Can't listen. Can't argue properly. Back to the echo chamber where facts that destroy your arguments can't harm you. At least your views are increasingly irrelevant and rejected by the wider society.

I know that stings, especially when you are of the "everyone gets a trophy" movement. You're not obsessed with little Greta? Funny that. You've spent so much time defending her propoganda machine.

You're slightly left of centre? Too embarrassed to admit what you really are? No wonder. I would be too, if I was you.

Enjoy Trump, Scomo, Boris et al. Oh the pain! No wonder you're perpetually angry like all those leftards who are protesting yet another devastating rejection of their nonsense.

A man who is not a socialist at twenty has no heart. A man who is a socialist at 40 has no brain. Wish your wife all the best with her studies. One day, in the distant future when she actually qualifies and has worked in the area, she'll no doubt be able to speak on the subject with some authority, unlike you. Back to crying over Boris.
Your true colours there in black and white.

I like your football stuff, but your take on activism and politics is shameful, and I applaud Gringo for having the patience to actually debate it with you. I always regret coming to this thread and today is no exception. I've been mostly off BF for a couple of months, so I'm a bit behind in my thread reading. I'm gonna read the most recent posts to find out what folks response to the bushfire emergency has been and then leave the Random Discussion thread for good I think, just stick to the footy, the rest is too conservative and old-fashioned for my tastes. (I keep saying this, hopefully *this* time!)

Australia's future is bleak while so many people in it (not just Drake, Australians are changing but still too many with this attitude) think it's more interesting to ridicule/dismiss a young climate activist and her family than get behind her and face our environmental problems with radical change.

People on all sides of the political spectrum are wasting too much energy right now trying to win a war against the other side, rather than finding a way forward together. Yep, even me. Can't stand the right wing stuff I read here and I'm embarrassed for some of the more militant left wing stuff too.

Thank goodness footy will always unite us

Replicating is absolutely the wrong word.
Its designed to store and release energy from erratic power supplies.

That's the trouble with solar for example.
Yes the generation cost is virtually free but you need the capital cost twice over.
if you want a 100Mw supply you need way more than 200Mw capacity, and then you need to be able to store 100Mw overnight.
The bigger the total amount of solar the bigger the problem.

Hazelwood Power Station was able to supply up to 1600MW day in day out.
Yallourn produces 1450 continuously.
Loy Yang produces 2200.

The existing tesla battery ( before the expansion discussed in the article ) can supply 129 MW for ONE HOUR .
When they say it replicates a coal plant, it means it can buffer the wind turbines, to give a steady output like a coal station.
Essentially it is the expensive fix for the governments unbalanced power supply.

129 MW for ONE hour, compared to the output of Yallourn and Loy Yang.
Like i said do the maths.
We need a bigger solution than Elon and his magic show.
I know one or two things about this and your correct, but renewables have their place in the mix and will continue to grow their share over time and should.

And?

I sit in the centre as stated.

This is a left wing forum.

Fact and fact.

What a waste of copying and pasting.

Smack bang in the centre of the right wing.

Like, you couldn't sound more Right Wing if you tried. Those further right than you are the militant nutjobs that organise massive brawls against minorities and those to your left are the moderate right who are more concerned with libertarian or capitalist principles than smashing the greens or whatever.

On the other side of them, you'll see true centralists. And way way in the distance, you'll see the left wing who endorse all the things you've been criticising.

I mean it's not for me to define you to you, but I'm just trying to help you see the whole spectrum so you can understand your place on it.

This forum is actually pretty mixed I suppose. I always feel that it's right wing, but I think that's because all the right wing stuff hits me harder whereas the leftwing and centralist stuff generally provokes no more than a click on "like" and a sigh of relief.

But talking about political issues seems harder than it used to be pre-social media. Hey, at least we're not gunning each other down for our views - that's worth celebrating!

don’t need to say anymore do we .

Johnnyray - more left wing loonies prattling on about climate change. Commies!!!! Except that it comes from the head of the world's largest investment company.

“BlackRock does not see itself as a passive observer in the low-carbon transition..” We believe we have a significant responsibility – as a provider of index funds, as a fiduciary, and as a member of society – to play a constructive role in the transition

"The evidence on climate risk is compelling investors to reassess core assumptions about modern finance."

"What will happen to the 30-year mortgage – a key building block of finance – if lenders can’t estimate the impact of climate risk over such a long timeline, and if there is no viable market for flood or fire insurance in impacted areas?

"Over time, companies and countries that do not respond to stakeholders and address sustainability risks will encounter growing skepticism from the markets, and in turn, a higher cost of capital."

My mate left AGL who are investing heavily in renewables despite having no federal government policy or help, to go to an energy consultancy group. They see so much external green investment going to the wrong places that they have set up a way the investors can use their money on real projects. There is a will from private citizens, investment groups like super funds and companies to invest. At the moment state government and these groups are operating seperate to the federal government who have tied themselves to the fossil fuel lobby. Half the ministers are directly linked to the mineral council.
