Hypothetically carlton get in on the Brisbane/Freo trade:

Brisbane:
Lose: Mitch Clark, 34, 52
Gain:pick 16, 20, O'halpin

Freo:
Lose: Pick 16, 20,
Gain: Bower, Clark,

Carlton:
Lose: Paul Bower, Setanta O'halpin, Gain: 34, 52

Brisbane get a make-shift Clark replacement in O'halpin (no where near the quality, but depth coverage while you develop a replacement) and two first rounders.

Freo lose the first two but get their man Clark, and quality in Bower.

Carlton get picks for players and free up list space
Why on earth would we be trying to get picks? Our premiership window is open - use our low picks to lure proven players to the club.

List space is what I am after.

Rather than delist some quality, I'd rather trade it, pick up lower picks and have some confidence in our list.

There is no proven player who we can lure this year. We haven't the currency available (high picks, a lot of contracted players) so I'd rather concentrate on freeing up some space and picking up some quality for a sustained shot at success.

We need replacements for Judd, Scotland, Simpson, Carazzo, Thornton, Waite lining up. A lot of those will come from inside the list, but we'll need players to step into their roles when they claim the older guys.

Top up on old role players and we have 1-2 shots. Build through shrewd drafting and trading and we could have 4-6 attempts.

Judd - Still has 4-5 years, so we have a few more drafts to sort this issue. Even if Judd is a once in a lifetime kind of player.
Scotland - Lucas could play that role or JR.
Simpson - Has a few years, like Judd we can replace him in future drafts
Carrazzo - Someone who can kick would be handy. Give this to Buckley.
Thornton - Watson/McCarthy, one of these will sort it all out and even White may play his role in 2012.
Waite - Mitchell will hopefully provide that target or Hampson.

I think we should stick to best available with our first pick, focus on an inside midfielder if it is close. Pick for needs in the 2nd round onwards. When in doubt, pick up a midfielder, you can often find a good defender in the local leagues.

Yeah I said these will be filled from within the list. But then we will need depth to cover them or other players to step up and fill the positions as guys like Gibbs and Yarran move into the middle.

If you build an awesome 22 you get a shot at a premiership. But it is dependent on luck with injuries, suspensions and form.

Build an awesome list and you have a shot at a dynasty.

Brock Mclean thread.

Long term success means you have to continually recruit quality teenagers.

An ageing list means once your window is slammed shut, you're stuffed for the next half decade - Just look at St Kilda! :p

Haven't read a majority of the posts in this thread so don't know if it has already been covered.

Going by the statements of the club (in terms of going after another experienced KPF) and our little involvement in trade week, I can't help but feel that we will go after another Duigan/Pods-like recruitment in the ND.

Are there any experienced/ mid-20's KPFs going around the state leagues ATM that we could be possibly looking at?

Would love it if we could recruit another surprise package at the expense of a relatively cheap pick.

The name escapes me, but apparently Ratten was over in Adelaide keeping an eye on a bloke in the SANFL.

Don't understand why so many people repeat this...
Lucas' footskills or footysmarts don't come anywhere near Scotland's.
JR maybe more suited to that role but not Lucas.
I see lucas as a winger or HF.

Here's a theory which will waste my time:

Carlton seems to make quite a bit of noise pre-trade week. Ratten press conference, Goddard rumours aren't shot down, Russell, Mclean, Hampson all widely believed to be on the market. Club stays pretty quiet and lets the noise build.

Trade week starts and Swann is on TWR on monday essentially saying, nothing much here really, maybe Bower and O'halpin, we'll see.

What changed?

F/S bidding and the surprising lack of bids on 1 Dylan Buckley. Could Carlton of been planning on convincing other clubs to leave us alone in the F/S bidding process, by implying we might use our first two picks in trades, like Hawthorn? Hawthorn pulled out for Tom Curran and clubs must of known they had big plans, maybe they didn't want to get tied down on Buckley, because Carlton seemed likely to only bid low, and use picks for trades.

Did we ever intend a big trade push?

It seems like Caddy wants to head back to Vic because his father is ill. First off, I would like to wish all the best to his father and the rest of his family.

Now down to footy talk, he has nominated the Bombers as his preferred club but the trade has been stalled because GCS are not happy with pick 19 and another player that they're offering along with some other pick. So, if he's desperate to get back home, I think we should make a heavy play for him. He would be the high quality big bodied inside mid that we need. I'd be willing to offer pick 22 + Lucas + even Bower to get him over. I'm not sure if we can match what the bombers are offering contract wise, but maybe we can. But if there's any chance we can get him, then I think we should go for it. If we put up a better offer than the Bombers, this might persuade GCS to deal with us and pretty sure we could convince him to come to Carlton.

With both bower and Lucas unsigned at the club, pick 22 plus those two would be a good trade for Caddy. I think at the club would have the money for his contract as well with the money we were setting aside for lucas and bower.

We should try and hijack this trade in a similar fashion as Melbourne did.

Hoping the up-tops seize this one in true blue fashion. Exactly what we need, young and bloody good. Make it happen!

If only they read bigfooty! Maybe ericpascoe can give us some info on whether the club has thought about making a play for him?

I'm pretty sure MS3 said yesterday that the blues were interested but have since pulled out of the race for Caddy
