Some days have historical significance no matter. Australia day just like Anzac day does. Just like Anzac day it too is tinged with sadness at loss, loss of the generations of first nations people who endured attempted genocide via the aboriginal wars that followed. If we have evolved to one people as we hope though ....people of Australia... then it's important for reconciliation to move away from the venom and hatred of protests of our heritage characterised as an invasion whereupon both are adversarial one being victor and the other vanquished. It serves no useful purpose and instead perpetuates division. Much better for all concerned to recognise significance of the day but reflect too (just as we do on Anzac day) on the sadness as well as the change that the day brought reflected in the country today. You can never change what happened so it's silly to try to ignore truth but we can change our understanding and with it a changed perspective it is hoped that moves us all to unity

The victorious crusty old white boys could never be accused of “venom and hatred”… insensitivity… stealth… coercion… maybe?
40% of the nation abstains from celebrating the date… and that number grows year on year…. with as many as 60% of our youngest… and unsurprisingly 52% of women.

But yeah hang on to that date… it seems like a really effective way to move forward

Don't mind this from you . Embrace the 1st nation people on the day as well as celebrating for all .

I was born here and lived here the whole of my life. I'm proudly Australian even if I'm not proud of some of the history.....aboriginal wars, stolen generation, right to vote and failure to say sorry., Treatment of Adam Goode's. I refuse to accept I should view myself as an occupy

I cheer rather than boo Goodes; I would have said sorry years before it happened; when I read truth about the aboriginal wars I'm horrified and disgusted; when I think of the stolen generation it makes me deeply sad; when talks turn to continued poverty of some indigenous I agonise for a solution; when Mabo happened and Keating recognized it's justice I was standing and cheering.

First nations are part of our fabric of life and clearly deserve their place. So too are those that arrived on the tall ships and their descendants. I owe my very existence to them.....and I'm Australian too and have every right to show the respect I do to that event. it is doubled edge no doubt but it IS our history whatever pain remains and regrets persist. And no one should ever dismiss it as irrelevant nor should we ever resile from it either. The path we've all taken to be where we are and our roots has meaning. Always will

Amazing storm in Melbourne , how lucky we are that we have a roof over Docklands and Rod Laver . On a positive Ash Barty is a great Aussie , no matter what her heritage is , even claps her opponents off after she beats them . Also good on the GWS player who refuses to wear a pride jumper , should be a choice .

First day at my new school and the room next door had water cascading in through one of the light fittings. Parents have had water damage in the backroom because the gutters couldn't clear the water in time. Very much QLD style weather.

The sporting facilities we have here are second to none. It's why all the talk of losing the Aus Open after the Djokovic stuff is a bit of a laugh. 3 good sized stadiums with a retractable roof on each, additional stadium (Kia arena) with decent shade with a roof over the seating. You can't find that anywhere else on the pro circuit.

Probably one of the worst days of my life today watching my 13 year old niece get taken by cancer , who has been battling since 7.

Me and my brother are not very close being the way we were brought up but I’m going to make an effort to try and rectify this.

Family should be close and life is just so short.

Witnessing my brother and family today was just shit house

Sorry to hear that Punts. It's just not fair when these things happen to kids.

My condolences to you and your family, Punts. My dad passed away last week & we buried him yesterday, so I can empathise with what you're going through.

Wasn't covid , but an infection in the neck that must've swelled up in the throat . He passed today sadly.

So sorry Ticky. My love to you.

It's a tough thing when a parent passes. Almost feels like your roots are missing.
