Ratten interview

Why make a ruckman a forward, which rarely works and failed before. Thornton showed to be a many times over a better KP forward than Hampson will ever be and even he's filling in time there until Mitchell develops. While not exactly Buddy and Roughie, Waite, who's certainly a great player but need him on the park, and Thornton have shown they can do the job satisfactorily enough for now. Choices aren't great. Kreuzer is the only ruckman we have any good resting forward hence he gets the 2nd ruck role for that reason. Kreuzer, Waite, Thornton with Walker/Gibbs the Amigos will go pretty well.

Hopefully Mitchell, being a fair lump of a lad, with come on and play some decent footy as did Talia and Butcher did this year in their 2nd years. Be a good support at this stage if that occurred.

Cannot believe all the negativity here in regards to our forward line next year.

People would like to sell our souls for someone like Dawes or the like.

Thank god they are not running the club.

Everything is going to plan people, relax, sit back and enjoy the ride.

Push comes to shove free agency is coming in next year ... we will get what we need just when our push is at its peak .... BUT ... next year could be a bonus!

Don't understand the negativity either.

I'm sure Ratten has looked at any number of options and decided that maybe this isn't the right time to be pushing hard for a KPP (I mean one where we might have to spend big to get in) and decided that it may suit us more to just go with what we have IF we can't get someone in that suits what the coaches are trying to do.

Exactly right.

Why make a ruckman a forward was the question? Think back to the impact that Paul Salmon had on Essendon [unfortunately]. I believe it can and must be done! However, I do believe that Mitchell and Casboult [hopefully remains on the list], can both be hardworking challengers to the forward role.

Did anyone see the game where hampson kicked 6 in the ants. It was on the same time as our final against essendon so i doubt many saw it. Would love to get a review on how he looked.

I must admit hampson as a forward gets me excited.

Can some please post the YouTube clip of hammer taking the screamer against Brisbane then almost slotting it from 55m?

So i take it you have never seen his arms and just want to fling some shit around.

The bloke has been on our list for some time now, is a mountain but still can't hold a grab - he needs to get his vision sorted if that's the case and harden his grip on the ball. Any contact seems to dislodge the ball - if he does harden up his wrists and fingers he can clunk them like Cloke, sorry to sling some more shit around oh mighty

Very few have Salmon 's ability to play both roles. He his career at Essendon as a successful forward before rucking alot later, actually when he went to Hawthorn. For every "Salmon", there's another there's another 50 ruckmen that simply can't be mare true forwards....or vice versa. It's a different skill. Hampson has shown us many times he's can play forward. We tore our hair out with frustration early in the year at his inability to mark then kick straight.

Don't believe in one-off clips. Bet there's not You Tube clips of the 100s he's dropped. As a good ruckman he'll take one and kick a beauty at times but that's alot different to the skill of playing permanent forward.

He got 6 in the VFL the same day Thornton was cutting it up big time at CHF in an AFL final. Huge difference. I know who I want playing forward of the two. For the once a year he'd kick 6 he's liable to drop them all the next week or ten. Hampson can play in the ruck, where we know he's damn good.

If Hammer does work as a forward it poses an interesting question for our rucks. .. Most teams would do anything to have 2nd ruck that can actually play 1st, so if he makes it as a forward then he could play that Setanta role but a lot better. .. So what does that mean for Kreuzer and Warnock?

Kreuzer doesn't have an issue, he'd make a great wingman. .. but if Warnock doesn't step up around the ground, consistently, then it could well mean bad news for him. .. Would be great to get all three working in the same team though and play a 60-20-20 three ruck combo, Warnock would need to be able to rest up forward and create a contest now and then though. ..

Would 60-30-10 (Nocka, Hammer, Kreuz) with Kreuzer playing a high half forward or wing work?

Edit: I'd settle for 50-50 (Kreuzer-Hampson) but can see Warnock continuing to develop. .. Nice headache to have I guess. ..

I can't remember a time when all three of Kreuzer, Hampson and Warnock were all fit and firing at the same time. All 3 of them need to be able to play forward and ruck so that any two of them can play as 1st and 2nd ruckman. One of them is bound to get injured at some point, and if not, then theres a fight for a position which usually creates better form. If Hampson can't play forward then he's essentially useless in this day and age.
