I have mentioned many times this year that for Ratten to keep his contract, there must be many 'tests' tha he must pass. These are some i think he has to/ aleady has passed (in bold):

  1. Winning at least one game against each traditional rivals Collingwood and Essendon
  2. Backing up wins against strong teams such as Geelong and Western Bulldogs
  3. Showing competitive performances against top 4 sides (so far)
  4. Introducing a forwardline that works (so far)
  5. Beating teams that we havn't in many years; i.e. St.Kilda, Hawthorn, Adelaide)
  6. Continual development of players such as Robinson, Armfield, Yarran, Kreuzer and even Walker
  7. Stringing together at least 3-4 wins in a row twice during the season
  8. Winning at least one final
So far i think Ratten has improved a lot as a coach this year. He no longer seems to be like he's a player again as such, but rather a coach who attempts to lock out complacency each week. By this, i mean last year Ratten seemed to get excited himself about upcoming games (which is geat to see) but it got to the point where i think he players knew they should/ would win the following week, setting in complancency.

However, i am still not 110% convinced as we have only backed up 2 wins this season with a win the following week. This is why the next 3 weeks is probably the biggest test for Ratten and the team to see if he is a truly good coach and if the team are legitimately at top 4 standard.

I suppose time will tell but i believe these are the true tests for Ratten and if we can pass every one, then we should be top 4 standard, or there abouts.

From what I can see thus far, Ratten is doing his job perfectly, it's up to the players to deliver, particularly our midfielders....consistency, consistency, consistency.

So to keep his job, you think we have to beat:

Pies, Cats, Dogs, Saints, Bombers, Hawks & Crows.

I'll assume your lofty standards could not accept loses against teams below us last/this season, so you could add Port, Swans, Kangaroos, Demons, Eagles & Tigers to the list.

Could you please clarify if we are allowed to lose to Freo & Lions - there is a bit of a grey area there

Hopefully point has been made...

These are not 'Ratten's Tests' (Point 4 being the exception)

Some of these points are a good/interesting challenge for our team over the course of the year, but that is all.

For our future success, point 8 is pretty vital though.

Every single game is a test not only for Ratten but the rest of the coaches, and of course the players as well.

Part of Ratten's problem, and he has openly admitted this IIRC, is that he places too much emphasis on the emotion behind certain matches.

Ratten should be judged based on where he has steered this group throughout the course of his time at the helm.

Ratts is doing a fine job and has helped us go from a team right down the bottom to a club that made finals last year and is almost certainly going to repeat that feat this season with interest on top.

Judging Ratten on the back of individual games against certain opposition is not the right way of looking at it. It is far more important to view the team we play against as just another opponent, forget the emotions associated with that opponent (including any 'streaks' involved with our matches) and concentrate on sticking to the game plan which has been formulated to hopefully beat any team on game day.

So another thread about Ratten and his contract and being fired...blah blah.

So taking the club to their first finals in 8 years last year.

Then this year without Fev he has taken us to 5-3, first time since 2002 i think, smashed teams like Geelong & Saints, restructured a forward line which most predicted wouldn't be abel to kick goals, has players firing who many had written off Walker & Irish, has the team winning more than losing and swinging with confidence, out socahed premiership and GF coaches in Williams, Lyon, Thompson, coaching the 3rd youngest side in the comp to be sitting 5th at this point of the season.

Not sure what else he needs to do to have people actually accept he is a decent coach and is doing all the right things.

He doesn't have to beat an arch rival like Essendon or Collingwood, he doesn't have to back up wins against the Dogs (i can't remember the last time they beat us), previous history is always against considering our past 8 years so we'll always havea team that has the wood over us.

At the end of the day, the club seems happy with Ratts, the palyers seem happy with what he is doing and they are winning and nto sitting bottom liek so many expected.

Time to stop these sort of threads and actually get behind our caoch, back him in and congratulate the man when he gets us the glory in a few years.

Disagree here.

It's great to beat these teams cause they're absolute f*ck heads but beating them means no more in the big picture than beating Freo or Adelaide.

Well said.:thumbsu:

This thread may have had some merit before the season started but good performances alter expectations and to be realistic, I think before the season started, a par score may have been to match last years win/loss record, to develop an effective forward stucture by the end of the year, and to see incremental development in the younger players. If Carlton win the next 8 games, there will be an expectation on this board that a successful season will be contesting a gf.

Why should I type when this has been said. Well done BH.

All the external "experts" had us widely tipped to miss the 8 on the back of sneaking in last year, and losing our forward line, as well as our "horror" draw to start the year.

We have got as many wins now as I though we needed by round 11 to make the top 8, as I think we can win 7 of our last 11 at least. Should we do what our form dictates, by round 11 we should have closer to 8 or 9 wins, meaning to finish above last year, and well ahead of everyones expectations we only need to win 4-5 from the last 11.

Ratts has done a great job. Period.:thumbsu:

This is not one of those threads where 'if he doesn't achieve these things then he should go'. I am in full support of Ratts and believe he should stay. What i am simpy trying to point out is that the 'tests' above supply a good measuring stick to analyse just how far we have improved and realistically how far away we are from our next premiership.

This does not mean that we ignore/ excuse losses against teams such as kangaroos, melbourne, richmond, WC, etc. but rather, if we are to become a powerhouse team again, how far off the better teams we are and if we can improve. Hence the goals above - especially those of beating our rivals (being able to lift in highy anticipated games) and beating teams we havn't in recent years.

I think it might have got off on the wrong foot with the opening paragraph.
