Not buying what you are selling after today’s game Arr0w. Umpires were momentum killers for us and the impetus for them.

The very definition of influence

Free kicks were 14 to 12, doesn't look one sided to me

Umpires didn't change our setup at half time, nor did they effect disposal efficiency, nor efficiency inside forward 50, where we had way more opportunities but didn't capitalize

This one really stung today, I mean really stung, when all you want is for your team to compete fiercely and give it everything they have, which we did, and to see that momentum taken away from you through no fault of their own, it really leaves a very bitter taste in the mouth, very bitter.

David King should be sacked for what he just said.....

Our three KPF our injured.

what a ******* idiot.....
I thought a similar thing. Gov, H and Charlie all missing. Most teams would struggle without their best talls.

Greg Baum wrote a great article during the week in The Age where he talked about how we’ve got holding the ball wrong by penalising the guy trying to win it. There would be people on here old enough to remember when the ball winner was prioritised by the rules. Guys like Diesel would be crucified out there. It’s just shocking to watch the play maker get screwed time after time. The interpretation changed in the early 2000’s and stuffed the game up totally.

Anyway... re today’s game:

what terrible umpiring
Great to see Fish back
Great to see De Koning back
We play great footy at times. As we mature, we’ll play great footy for longer.

And here is a quiz question for you. If the siren had gone in the Grand Final and we were two points behind, but had a set shot for goal forty metres out, is there a player in the team you would prefer to have it less than Cripps? That leads to my next question. If your captain is incapable of scoring a clutch goal, is he the right choice for captain?

We will have to agree to disagree. I don’t rate him at all and would delist. Where do you think he could offer more?

He needs to play around the ball. He basically was drafted for his ability to step out of congestion which unfortunately we have rarely seen.

Example he had 28 against essendope this year as a midfielder. Next game vs the saints 12 disposals as a HB...

umpire numbers 7 & 22 both Perth boys.

would never have guessed.

hard to believe a $billion sporting organisation could have such shambolic officiating.

a complete embarrassment.
The AFL needs to take a leaf out of FIFA's book and ensure umpires are from neutral cities.

When Madrid play an away game in Milan, the referees aren't Italian. They bring in referees from England, or Germany, etc.

We're well overdue for a similar system in the AFL. It's not like umpires need the same sort of recovery time as players. There's no reason why Perth umpires can't fly across to an east coast city on Friday and fly back Saturday/Sunday night after a game.

It'll never happen, but I can dream dammit!

Didn't expect to win, but still don't understand why Teague ignored what was working, tempo, hard tag on Kelly, TDK in the ruck, just killed the momentum after half time.

Gibbo was poor, Cottrell is a keep, so is TDK. Murph was good, so too Jones. Cripps and Doc are struggling. Weits was good, given the service to Kennedy

Beyond belief why SPS is still at HB

Setters on the up and Fisher was one touch after being out for a while

WC just a well balanced side
I think we go for that key defender you like and zac williams. Backline is really the only issue

A bit non plussed after the game. Didn't expect to win but, the second quarter inspired hope. Just had that feeling that the experienced, finals level side would produce what thry needed to win in the end, and they did. Winning culture, attitude and mature bodies with proven skill. We have a way to go yet.

Loved the input of the newbies and returners: Fish (snapped) his way back into hearts, TDK showed bit and Cottrell should be perservered with. TDK stood up to NN nicely but ran out of legs. He will clunk some of those marks in the future. Do we bite the bullet and make him #1 ruck when H returns and drop Pitto? I think it's time. Pitto has been servicable but ineffective of late.

Inevitable calls for Murphy only exacerbated by the advantage mistake. Murph was good today. Lead or possessions at went at around 70 DE.

Bam showed his prowess in marking contests. Funny, he can play in the dry.

Crippa is in a strange place. Step up midfield coach if you are capable.

SPS was great in the first half when he was playing closer to the ball and forward. Went out of it late and had little impact. Another mystery man?

The big swings are on Teague. An obvious trend that should have been solved by now. Create contests and slow the tempo. We have enough inside mids to do this but we continue to flounder.

Walsh was great today, imposed himself in tight and used speed to escape. Might be time to give Dow another crack to add more size and speed options.

Liam Jones was collossal. We have to live with a couple of foot disposal errors for the rest of his athletic efforts.

Plow, Simmo, Willo really solid efforts.

Eddie needs a rest, not sure it will happen though.

Losing Martin had more impact than the umpires.

The inconsistency of interpretations is a league wide issue, not a Carlton conspiracy. HTB, HTM, holding in the marking contest and deliberate are a crap shoot every game. Confusion abounds.

Anyway, collation of random thoughts, enjoy the debate.

SPS needs to play mid
Cottrell and Tdk good
Murph was better today, but we won’t go anywhere whilst he is still getting a game.
Kennedy was great
I wonder what we could get for Cri..........🤔
Love sps but i think he needs a stint in the 2s. i understand that hes playing out of position but doesnt deserve a mid spot over any of the other blokes. hes obvs staying in the side but i would drop him before i let him go midfield

I thought you guys were good today. You should be proud of your side.
No McGovern, no McKay, obviously no Charlie, Jack Martin injured early. Basically the entire forward line missing, against the premiership favourites at their fortress, and you pushed them really hard for most of the day. We’ve had our own run of injuries at GWS over the years.

I could see how you might be frustrated though. It would tough to watch week after week,

1. A coach who sits back and pretty much just hopes his team will win.

2. A real stalwart and warrior like Murphy just hanging in way too long. It would hurt to see such a great club person become a liability.

3. A captain and top five player in the league, like Cripps, unable to do the one thing he built his reputation on. And be the opposite of whatever “clutch” is.

4. Be able to predict, like watching a replay of a game you’ve already watched, what will happen, and how you will lose, when you look like winning.

But I think you have a lot to look forward to. This is a talented side. You get some key players back from injury, pick up one or two guns at the trade table, and find a coach who can coach, and you’ll be very hard to stop and may even create a genuine dynasty.
Didn't you adopt the Orange? Dont forget to change your profile on the way out.

Can't be too displeased with that to be honest, we looked so much more balanced this week and add Governor, JSOS & Harry to this lineup and we're looking the goods.

Kennedy, Walsh and Fish (How special was he?!) + The King! So good!

Next week we add McGovern mckay and Dow. That team would have beaten west coast today pretty convincingly.

You’d think that after all our learnings, we’d know how to change a few things up when they have momentum. Play a man behind the ball for 5 minutes

Problem was most came out of the Centre so a bit hard to blame the coaching/structures...if it comes beautifully out of the centre like that...only way to really 'halt' momentum is if the midfield actually can get their hands on it, which they couldn't really for that 10 minute stretch...

Perhaps you’re right.
My biggest knock other than not getting it enough is when he does his disposal is very poor. So many deliveries forward go anywhere and even his lateral handpassing in close misses targets. Perhaps if that was better than even 10 a game if 70 percent were great would be useful.

Fwd 50 pressure was good which was a wet game, “game plan”. Punch it long, get the ball to ground and apply pressure, worked well in the first half but the rain didn’t come and we didn’t change our game plan. Plenty more I50’s but we needed to lower our eyes in the second half and hit up targets

There’s 4 out of our last 7 games we simply should just win. If we can pinch another from pies or giants, finals are still a chance. If not, we finish where we all tipped we’d finish.
I think a 9-12 finish is pretty reasonable on where we are at.

Not buying what you are selling after today’s game Arr0w. Umpires were momentum killers for us and the impetus for them.

The very definition of influence
Good sides overcome poor umpiring.
The real momentum killers are the captain missing from thirty out, and dropping chest marks from ten out, and getting beaten at the one thing you do better than anyone else.

Momentum killers are Murphy tried to explode from the contest at snails pace and turning the ball over for an opposition goal.

Momentum killers is the coach SEEING he needed a target up forward and not pushing a big man up there.

The umpiring was poor, but if you want to know why Carlton lost today (and last week) you need to look closer to home.

An underrated thing coming out of this year is the quality of depth we're actually having to both expose and use across the board. I saw an article earlier in the week, which had us having lost the second most games to injury compared to any in the comp; as a side that has been smashed similarly in the past and been down for 50+ lossess each week as a consequence, there's something to be said about still playing decent footy given who's come in and performed.

No Gov hurts us, bad. No Harry hurt us badly. Charlie. Martin. We're probably not quite there to take out WC in Perth, but we gave it a decent shake. You need to be more than 6 goals better than them to have a chance over there.

I'm also going to go out on a very dubious looking limb here, and suggest just quietly that we should get off the umps' back over this one. They've gone from umpiring games without a crowd to umpiring with the worst crowd in the country when it comes to appealing for free kicks, the WC players all playing for them, and the players around them literally making the signal at them before they've made their decision. We were on the shit end of the stick, but at what point does the AFL go to West Coast and inform them that telling the umps how to adjudicate is simply not on?

The calls prematch from our own suggesting that we had no chance juxtaposes with how filthy people are rather interestingly. How many thought we'd win? Wouldn't be a lot, I'd have thought.
Teague needs to go back to what he was doing last year. He'd ring the changes and seek to influence the contest, but now he's 'backing our structures' every time.

Also, I don't want to hear how 'proud' you are of them. They're professional players, whose aim is to win every week; for you to be proud of them losing makes me want to vomit. Be philosophical, be balanced, be upset, be furious; be anything other than proud. You want them to be proud of their efforts today? You want their mindset to be content merely with putting in effort? Recognise that this is sport, and that every team need win or lose sometimes, but never ever be proud of a loss.
