I don’t mind winning the game off the back of that 8 goal stretch so much if we recognise where that burst came from and can we emulate it when we need. How many games have we held on with a good opposition and then they have gone bang and kicked 3-4 goals quickly and put us out of it. The top teams seem to always be able to grind away in 3rd gear and then go up to top gear for a spurt to put us away. The question is, where did this stretch of inspired football come from and is it something we can control. The good sides know they have this extra gear they can turn on when they need. That is a major weapon if we can learn how to grind and then go bang.

I still think that Cripps isn't rotating forward enough - it's a perfect opportunity for SPS to get some more time in the guts, or Fisher too. I also think that we need to slowly move away from Ed, and play Stocker in that spot. I think Curnow can use his running ability across a wing, while still getting occasional minutes on-ball.

I'm really hoping we can blood the next generation of gun midfielders - Walsh, Dow, Stocker, Kennedy, and of course Cripps.

The goal was nothing spectacular but it felt like a really good moment for Paddy. I hope he understands how good he can be. Easily capable of 20 + a goal week in week out.
It was pretty standard, but for Dow confidence has been a big issue and him backing himself to have a shot from there is significant imo.

Probably not a moment that will live in infamy but it's a very positive sign.

the fact it went straight is as good a thing ive seen in ages - his kicking was pretty good on the weekend.....

I just cannot understand how a team capable of kicking 8 goals in one quarter, can just go back into their cave like a slumbering giant and only kick another 2 goals for the rest of the match!!! It almost seems like someone has to do something really inspiring like Saad did, to bring out an adrenalin rush and ignite the rest of the team?!!! I am not anti-Teague, but maybe it would take a harder task master than he appears to be, to keep the players switched on for the whole match, but it certainly is a problem we need to solve soon if we are to improve as a club....

this is where I’m so torn. I really don’t know if this is where Teague simply gets out-coached on game day.like the opposition coach figures out what we’re doing and easily shuts it down.

Or if it’s a case of the players not being mentally tough enough to carry out the same instructions for 4 quarters.

I genuinely don’t know. This is where I’m having faith the review. It’ll undoubtedly shed some light on where we’re going wrong. We just need to let the process take it’s course.

When Walsh is kicking oof from 45m, Dow kicking truly from outside 50 was significant.

I think it helped that we had a fair amount of momentum. Not sure if he kicks that against the run of play.

Probably not, but doing it at all is building. If he's in a similar situation, but against the run of play, in the future he will have knowledge he can do it.

I thought Dow was kicking long to Eddie in the square, similar to when H did it

Perhaps it's a tactic

Ed had to be put in there to lock down on Laird.

Slowly seeing some good positional changes by the coaching team. Big step taken in playing SPS midfield, playing a makeshift ruckman and...playing Kennedy and Dow in the centre instead of Walsh.

Hmmm... might be something to this.

We've broken down a lot over the past few years kicking from 20m outside 50 to the top of the goalsquare; either we take a contested mark or the opposition whisk it away along the wings. We still do that, but if we can adjust those plays from 20m out to 5m outside 50, those long high bombs become shots on goal, and some of the draftees - Dow (for all that he's been inaccurate, is a long kick), LOB, Kennedy, Stocker, Walsh; add in Newnes, Cripps, Saad, Williams and Doc for good measure, too - are long kicks.

There's a bit of history in minute recalibrations like this causing a team to go from not good enough to exceptional very quickly. Hawthorn in 2007 did some analysis of their game based on basketball (or soccer; it's been a while since 2007!) and discovered that where they were kicking the ball from (genuine HBF) wasn't generating scores where if they carried the ball an additional 20-30m further afield before kicking they became scoring shots; fast forward to 2008, and they won a flag due to 2 leading targets kicking 100 and 80 between them. Collingwood used a variation of Clarko's cluster to create what's now known as a deep press in 2010, and drove teams wide; they might've almost lost to the Aints, but they had a percentage of 145. WB used an extra around the stoppage and the defensive pivot strategy to create slingshots in 2016. Richmond gave up on clearances and disposal efficiency and embraced chaos ball in the right parts of the ground.

We look for patterns where there aren't any sometimes, but it's also the smallest of things that become indicators of something brewing. This kind of forced innovation - the slight adjustment of what isn't working to something that might work - could be the beginning of something amazing.

They are not looking at Teague. They already have their scapegoat in Barker and from what I am hearing could be about to give Russell a huge haircut with respect to his job description. This is not going to end well.

We are not great against defensive tactics. Particularly in our midfield. Not great at playing tempo or slow ball movement footy, too many skill, mostly kicking errors or someone doesn't get it and try's to up tempo and screws it up.

Too many forwards who can't kick. You get McKay, Fogarty, Silvagni, Casboult if he's there having plenty of shots then you're going to have a shitload of misses. It's a big problem, we have too many consistent missers.

Midfield tactics/quality. We have blokes who go missing. Perhaps lack of running ability.

I think our game style lacks balance. It's all or nothing. I don't thing we are pushing good kicking with team selections enough.

Our younger brigade was completely insane on the weekend - starting with Walsh - a cool 38 and BOG by several lengths of several straights.

Weitering - still young. Sammo, Dow, Harry, TDK, Silvagni - it was awesome.

Our recruits stood up well Newman, Williams, Saad, Kennedy and by far our best forward of the night for mine was Martin.

Old hands in Cripps and Jones great to see.

Think Newnes needs to be reconsidered.

Not sure if it was noticed or been discussed, but I was surprised the umpires missed Eddie playing on with his showboating back heel in the goal square after taking a mark, the Crows players all saw and pointed it out but the umps gave the ball back, it could have been a momentum killer, glad he got it back as it would not have gone down well.

Also, Walsh is an insane player, so good in so many areas, but he really needs to work on kicking on his left, los of times I see him running parallel with the goals and having to attempt a low percentage kick, practice young man and in 2 years, you will have another weapon.

We did miss 5 easy shots in the last.

Also after Betts marked and hurt himself in the 3rd we were nearly 6 goals up. He turned it over costing a goal and then didn’t touch it again. Forward line didn’t look as dangerous

I was happy with the performance of SPS, Dow, Kenno and Newnes. Why, because for once we played the team essentially - where they were recruited to play.

This off-season should have a more significant direction towards aerobic fitness. We look dead in the water in ALL our games. We couldn’t run out of sight on a dark night after 3/4 time. Get fitter and those 2nd quarters will be much more prevalent.

Again, I was wrapped with Dow and SPS. Hopefully they stay on ball and progress.

Dang I wish Eddie had held that hanger. Near fell offf my bar stool. He should go again, his presence makes people so nervous and he is very very smart. I love Eddie. Martin was a bottler too.

Great to see big Matty K on the bench too. Could have used him.
SPS didn’t play on ball. Why do so many people think he did? Is it because he didn’t play backline?

He played high half forward and was in the foreard group rotation.

No, he didn't. Rewatch the game.

Martin marked the ball, and had it longer than - say - Tex Walker did earlier in the game, and a defender punched the ball from between his hands. The mark went unpaid, and play resumed. If the adjudication was reasonable - as in, fair - it'd have been paid a mark to Martin, but alas.

Yeah noticed it at the time and then the replay. Think the whistle was a little late for the mark so umpire probably gave him some slack. Would have been a massive blunder

I have watched the replay a number of times. The kick was too high, leaving the opportunity to spoil and it would have been lucky have been paid a mark. Fogarty held a mark for about as long in the goal square but Plow spoilt it. Generally players need to hold marks much longer than in previous eras. Amongst all of the umpiring decisions I had a problem with that was not one of them.

Bottom line a better kick would have been marked regardless of the umpiring. Point is I think the fall played a part in the less than perfect kick and he did nothing up to that point when we needed his class in the last quarter.
