Rd 21: Geelong vs Carlton

Really looking forward to this game. Playing rabbles like the Tiges and Dons bores me. Selections will be interesting as per usual. Not sure if we really have to change much. Very tempted to bring Yarran in, but by the sounds of it he didn't really dominate in the VFL. The Cats hate small forwards, and we've got the best going around. Tempted to play all 3. The Cats forward line is the biggest concern, and in particular their medium forwards. Have a feeling they'll keep Davies in as an "educational exercise", but a swap for Walker is possible. Wasn't impressed with Ellard against the Tiges. A lot is going to depend on injuries. Assuming no new injuries.......

Out: Ellard
In: Walker

Maybe's...

In Yarran
Out: Not sure

Even though the Cat's are in red hot form, we definitely have a chance because we seem to matchup well. We're exactly the wrong sort of team to take-on in a shootout because you'll lose. Pies know this and that's why they just ultraflood us out of the game. The Cats are arrogant enough to back themselves against us, and they usually lose that battle. Perhaps they might be a bit more defensive this time. Will be interesting. Blues by 34 points.

:)

I would say almost a certainty & I think Ellard will do a good job. He will wear Ablett like a glove.
Ablett will wear Ellard like a condom and "smash" us with him if we go with that match up.

Ellard doesn't have the gears and size to go with Ablett.

Ellard didn't even worry Didak who ignored the Carlton player who was on his hammer.

They'd send Ablett to FF.

I would bring in Walker if AJ misses.

And go man on man all over the ground.

Can't complain if we lose to a better team after giving it our best.

Robinson on Enright...The absent Houlihan had that role the last time we played them.

I expect Garlett to struggle this week on the smaller Etihad Stadium.

In the absence of an ideal match up for Carrazzo (Stanton, Davey and Dal Santo), he might get the job on Mackie as a run with player.

Maybe Varcoe...

I hope we tell JR to shut his mouth and not ask for Johnson this time round.

zeeCFC's Preview

Round 21 - Geelong vs. Carlton - Eithad Stadium, Friday Aug 20th 7:40pm

The stories of both sides are as follows. Carlton is finally finding the form it showed early in the year after a horror month which almost saw its finals hopes dashed. If the Blues win this, they could finish the round 5th on the ladder (a boost for our finals draw) but should most importantly, secure a home final. Our boys should also gain extra motivation for Marc Murphy's 100th game and strive to keep their spots with some great VFL performances

Geelong is out to prove themselves after losing Premiership favoritism to the filth. Some would say they achieved this by smashing the Dogs by 100+ points but a win over a Carlton side who has defeated them the last 2 times they played would most definitely mark round 19 down as somewhat of an aberration. Don't discount the extra satisfaction this great competitive side would achieve by beating the side which has had the wood over them the past couple meetings.

Carlton's Form: LWLWW
Geelong's Form: LWWLW
Last Time We Played: Carlton won 104 to Geelong's 68

Players pushing for selection: '~' = 50/50
~Brad Fisher
~Mark Austin
~Tuohy
~Cachia
~Johnson
- O'hAilpin
- Jacobs
- Thornton
- Houlihan
- Yarran
- Walker

Injury Worries:
- Hampson
- Joseph
~ Hadley

Likely changes:
IN: Walker, O'hAilpin/Jacobs, Houlihan (releasing Carrazzo to Midfield), Thornton
OUT: Joseph, Hampson, Hadley, Davies

My Expected Line up and Match Ups:

FB:
Thornton/Davies, Jamison, Russell
HB: Walker, Bower, Armfield
C: Gibbs, Judd, Simpson
HF: Robinson, Henderson, Houlihan
FF: Betts, Waite, Garlett
R: Warnock, Carrazzo, Murphy
I/C: O'hAilpin/Jacobs, Hadley, Ellard, Scotland

Russell > Stevie J
Jamison > Mooney
Armfield > Byrnes
Bower > Podsiadly
Thornton/Davies > Stokes
Walker > Varcoe

Robinson to harass either Mackie or Milburn
Houlihan > Enright
Ellard > Ablett
Carrazzo > Chapman
Selwood vs. Judd (unless Ling is back)
Scotland vs. Bartel

Key Points:

- Keep pressure up at all times
- Midfield tackling HAS TO BE UP, the best defense can be cut up in a matter of minutes by the Cats
- Hopefully we do some extra skills/tackling sessions this week, wouldn't hurt ;)
- Taggers need to also hurt their opponents on the attack aswell (but would be happy for Chapman & Ablett's taggers to just defend)

Blues by 18...goals (points) :thumbsu:

Pfft. I want JR to start an advertising campaign saying how much he'll destroy Johnson.

Then burn a doll shaped like Stevie J to hammer the point home.

We'll dance around it and revel in JR's shut down abilities.

Pressure is the key and is the reason why we have beaten them the past two times we have played.

We have had two great wins in a row against two very poor sides.... obviously the opposition Friday night is far from poor.

I would be a lot more confident if the game was at the G.

If Hampson and Joesph arent available we need include:
Jacobs & Walker.
Please dont mention Thornton - his not up to it.
Keep in Davies, give the kid some confidence.

Yarran should also be considered.
B: Walker (Pods) Jamo (Mooney) Rusell (Stevie J)
HB: Gibbs Bower (Stokes) Armfield (Varcoe)
C: Grigg (Selwood) Judd Simmo
HF: Betts Hendo Robbo (Enright)
F: Garlett Waite (Scarlo - needs to take him up the ground)
Foll: Warnock Murphy Carazzo
I:c Ellard (Junior) Jacobs Hadley (Or Yarran - depends on Match Ups) Scotland

If no match up for up for Hadley, bring Yarran in for leg speed through middle. Has gears.
Like Walker on a Tall and run off, Pods would be perfect. Jamo goes to Mooney.
Bower to stokes, has the pace and can burn him on the rebound, plu 3rd man up. JR his usual on Stevie J.
Armfield has big job on dangerous Varcoe.
Grigg to Selwood and Ellard to Junior.

Waite needs to move Scarlo around and take him away from the fwd 50.

Etihad is easier to flood after the Swans and Dogs who are mature sides like the Cats smashed us.

It will be good to have a hard hit out before the finals after two soft games in the last two weeks. The match committee would probably view it that way and see it as a warm up for September.

Can't afford to gift a game to Fisher.

Johnson is in form now.

If Walker comes in, I wouldn't mind moving Davies up the ground and giving him a run with role on one of their half backs.

Davies has a big body and runs hard.

Have been very impressed with him guns & the fact that he has played in the last 4 games, just shows that his persistance in the Bullants has paid off.

Well done to Ellard :thumbsu:

AJ was given the challenge last year in a NAB cup game & has done well on Ablett since.

Ablett will rape Ellard. I really hope AJ can play.

Hoping we can be really competitve and push them for the win.
A big loss damaging our percentage is the last thing we need this late in the piece.

We beat the Saints at Etihad, don't know what all the fuss is about?
Anyone reckon Chapman and Ottens could be out due to suspension?

Chapman threw 3-4 punches that landed, however they were all to the chest, so it will be interesting to see how it's adjudicated

If AJ isnt avaliable, i think the next option will be Carrazzo. He might able to get under Ablett's skin. But Carrazzo must be purely use as defensive running off Ablett. Make Ablett worries about Carrazzo but the only concern Carrazzo might not have the speed to keep up with Ablett.

I just trolled Carlton in Bay 13 - but it's not serious. :o

Anyway, looking forward to this game, it's always a cracker!

Remember that game when Peter Riccardi kicked a goal on the final siren against your mob to win the game? :D

Cheers, have a great week.

That would be the one which Wiggins touched as Riccardi kicked over the mark (we spotted the Cats a 39 point start in that last quarter).

Need to inject some class and skill. Definately Yarran and Walker in with Joseph injured/dropped and Ellard unlucky. Would like to see Houlihan in as well, not sure who for.

I know I said I didn't want Thornton to play another game for us but we might just need him this week....
  1. He will be fighting for his spot which means he will more than likely come out firing
  2. Another tall means Bower can be used more effectively and Waite can stay up forward

Yeh a good possibility, might be a good match for Pods ?

I'd consider it.

Thornton is possibly the best match up that we have for Mooney at the moment.

It mightn't count for much ATM, yet Bret has beaten Mooney or at least broken even with him in the past.

1. Thornton, we have been there and done that, surely our memories are not that short. If we want to play a 3rd tall defender let it be a young one who can be improved and be our future and that means playing Austin. Besides, we have a match up for Moony, it's Jamison. We know Thornton's too slow for quick forwards, he's not able to hold marking forwards and his decision making is slow and poor as is his onfield leadership and he provides no run out of defence. He leaks goals like a siv and is really only suited to playing as an attacking defender on medium sized slow players. We have enough attacking defenders who are far better. I've seen enough of Thornton and he's just not good enough. Sure he is a good VFL player where his opposition are slower and smaller and he can match them but the AFL is completly different.
Pods is far too quick and too tall for Thornton, Bower will take him. Mooney is not a bad match up for him but Jamison is a better one. Gibbs will take Chappy again and Russell will take Johnson.

2. Why would any one want to change the side that has belted Essendon and Richmond in the last two weeks, all those players deserve to prove themselves against a quality side like Geelong.

3. If AJ misses out then it's a simple solution. Bring in Walker to play on Ablett. Walker has the pace and indurance to go with Ablett and maybe even run off him and unlike AJ, Walker will be able to hold Ablett in the air.

4. Soft players are going to find it hard to get a game. Players who haven't developed a hard edge like Yarran or players that have never had it like Houlihan are probably going to find it tough to get a gig, Ratts is fed up with blokes who wont put their bodies in and attack the man/ball hard. Tough nuts like Ellard will be going no where.

5. Ellard stays in, his inside work has been good and he gives it his all, is a good tackler which is great, guys like him are making our bigger names like Murphy, Judd, Scotland, Carrazzo and Gibbs better. Ablett would belt Carrazzo, Carrazzo is not a tagger, he's only decent at holding average player, the good ones often kill him, if we have Carrazzo tagging Ablett then we lose one of our best outside recievers.
