Watch it as many times as you want but the bump was to the chest.
Ruggles was out before he hit the ground.

Other incidents assessed

Contact between Hawthorn’s Josh Gibson and the Geelong Cats’ Tom Ruggles from the second quarter of Monday’s match was assessed. The panel said that Hawthorn’s Isaac Smith had the ball, with Ruggles on the mark. Smith moved to play on and began to head to his left to move down the ground, with Ruggles seeking to pressure his disposal. Gibson comes from the side to provide a block for his teammate. Gibson makes body to body contact with Ruggles and, in the course of that contact, the players’ heads clash.

He sure did. I know Steve's son, Adam.

Steve was a hard player from what I saw of him.
I saw more of him when he played for Geelong West in 1979.
We made it to the GF but Parson's was dropped from the team by Goggin and the talk at the time was that it was over some disciplinary issue. Unfortunately we lost the GF to Coburg in a close finish. Parsons would have been handy at CHF.

I never seen him play but he was a hard man both on and off the field from what I've been told. Has a fearsome reputation down here from his playing days at Smithton.

The bump was, yes. But there was also a head clash resulting from the contact which in the past has been penalised. Think Nat Fyfe on Rischitelli (I think).
I can only speak for the bump which was legal. What happens afterwards is totally accidental and not punishable by definition.

The right decision was made.

Scott said McCarthy was just being managed (not "omitted") and is best 22 and will be straight back.
Smith will presumably have a fitness test again.
What happened to Smith?

Parsons is very stiff given Scott Thompson only classified as low impact when he drives his elbow into Danger's head when he is on the ground, leaving him in the hands of trainers. No such for Hodge off the glancing blow.
And this is the issue
If Hodge didn't change his path, there would be no incident, as Parson did not intentionally target him, it was a cheap shot on a split second decision
Scott T on the other hand, saw a target and just hit it

Scott's is the worse action due to the intent
Parson was simply silly, and did not set out to hit him

Based on what exactly?

-worst case
reckless
medium
head
>3 down to 2.

-best case
negligent
low
head
>fine.

-what he'll probably get
reckless
low
head
>2 down to 1.
Based on no logic other than being pessimistic. I'm glad I was wrong. Two was a good outcome. I was secretly hoping that Menegola would get off, but alas I was correct, like most, on that count.

Let's be serious for a minute mate, Gibson's bump was to Ruggles' chest ... Ruggles hit his head on the ground when he landed.

If we're suspending players for that the game's in trouble.

Oh I'm not necessarily saying he should be suspended, just that it was my understanding of the rule that those who bump and hit the head put the onus on themselves not to injure their opponent, regardless of whether the bump was fair or not. That rule seems to have changed.

I've only seen it a few times last night. But I thought hodge moved, and then parsons actually stepped over to make sure he got him.

Why he wasn't intending to tackle at that stage I'll never know.

I'm pretty sure the rule has been in place to include body contact to the head rather than accidental contact.

Anyway It's irrelevant now, he'll accept the one week and move on. He might be unlucky If Horlin-Smith comes back and plays well.

Didn't anyone else notice that Hodge put his elbow up first. Hodge then chickened out when he saw rookie Parsons take him on instead of chickening out like most other players would have done.
Did anyone else see him sooking to the umpires at three quarter time.
He was a bit like the old schoolboy bully when people finally decide to take him on and hit back. he simply couldn't handle it.

I thought Smith was very good in the ruck.
I have not seen the stats as yet.

They changed the rule last year to say that a head clash wasn't punishable if the tackle/bump was otherwise reasonable.
That is, they made the assessment entirely discretionary and reintroduced inevitable inconsistency.

On Parsons, fair enough, if we are going to play on the edge physically and walk that line then occasionally we are going to have to accept that someone will cross it.

Menegolas is bullshit though, no second action and Hodge got up and played on, yet Menegola gets a week. Meanwhile Gibson can knock a guy out of the game and no sanction required? Bullshit.

I don't particularly like Hodge but to insinuate he is soft is very , very wide of the mark.
To take what he did from Menegola and Parsons , play the game out to be their best and ruffle Parsons hair at the end of the game is to be admired IMHO
