From memory we played St.Kilda at Princess Park/Optus Oval about 10 years ago and it rained all day. The Dons won by 20 goals plus. I would be happy with a win today.

D.Bewick take a bow (only going on memory) He toyed with that mob. It ****ed down all day, stood under the shed on the h.f.f. Class effort on limited prep.

I recall Mercuri having a blinder in the wet that day too. I think Moorcroft played one game that year, and that may have been the one.

Yeah it was. He played his first two games against St Kilda, two years apart.

It may have rained all day, but the "tin bar" near the the members wing was open all day too.

From memary, the next day, the papers and talkback were flooded with Collingwood sympathisers bemoaning their 5 day break compared to Hawthorn's 8 (the Pies lost to the Hawks)...

... even though we also had 5 days, and the Saints had 8 and we won by 116 in the wet.

We were never quite good enough in '95. Reminded me of '89. We were just a notch below the genuine contenders.

Essendon certainly were exceptionally good at full strength in 1995 and 1996, as that game must prove (I have heard Fox or someone showed the game in full but any footage would be wonderful) but Carlton were just superlative and but for a few injuries and a short but sharp form slump could have established themselves as the best team in League history with a 25-0 record.

Moreover, with exclusively open roof stadiums 25-0 (or 0-22 for that matter) were more improbable than they stand currently because closed roof stadiums have tightened the potential talent pool.

Still, I have come to think Essendon’s 1995 and 1996 teams were actually better than those of 1990 and 1993 that made the Grand Final, because there was in 1995 a benchmark over a full season not seen since the Blues and Hawthorn in the late 1980s.

I was there, was a little tacker, went with the family, ate pizza, loved the game so much I actually enjoyed the game.

Me and the ol' Pop had a wow of a time, the rest of the family had a day they'd rather forget. Just got on the blower and reminded them of it, so thanks for the bump! :thumbsu:

interesting year for us - I've got a James Hird poster from 1995 with the title "the sky is the limit" with him up in the clouds taking a grab.

I remember Smokin Joe took a mark about 30 meters out from our defensive goal and turned around and had a shot at the saints goal.

Sheeds wasn't happy about it. He said that it was disrespectful.

Very strange! Even though Essendon were 102 points up at three-quarter time, one would think that on a slippery surface that the wettest football day in Melbourne's history provided they would not have been tired, especially since a slow St. Kilda side provided such little opposition
