Re: RDFL 2010 Season - 1st Elimination Final

Prediction: Its a little unfortunate that you finish the season in 3rd and your whole year rests on one result, a loss here and the season overall is a failure. A win and you have a shot at a Grand Final. I personally hope that the Roos are too strong, but this is a real danger game, if they get through it, massive chance in the 2010 season. But the danger is, they wont get past the first week.
Romsey by 8 points.

The great thing about finishing third and winning in week 1 of the finals is you get the double chance and have two attempts to make the Grand Final. You would think 3rd would be a long way in front of 6th but because the RDFL is so even this is not the case. If Romsey get up the double chance will go to Macedon or Diggers - a massive win for the teams finishing 4th and 5th. Another reason the Roos should have a home final.

RDFL 2010 Season - Qualifying Final

Qualifying Final
Riddell FNC Vs Lancefield FNC
Romsey Park - Romsey
2.30PM Saturday

Last time they met
Round 1
Riddell 17.9.111 def Lancefield 4.12.36

No matter the excitement that surrounds the games on Sunday, this clash is certainly the match of the weekend. Last years Premiers Lancefield up against the 2008 premiers Riddell. The Bombers are still smarting from the fact that it was the Tigers that knocked them off the perch and embarked on a campaign to regain their crown at the end of last year. While other clubs were talked up a little more for their recruits, the Bombers went along quietly, building a list that would take them back to the top. The loss of Chris Meacham was offset by the recruiting of Matt Baird from Sunbury Lions. James Climas, Matt Sammut and Gerard Liddell were all brought into the midfield to strengthen an already strong midfield, while the 2010 Bowen Medallist Aaron Blade returned from Macedon to rejoin the Bombers. From the first bounce in 2010 the Bombers have been at their dominant best, making sure they made a loud and clear statement that they hadn't gone away just yet. They suffered injuries to key players, Blade missed a significant chunk of the season, while Cam McCabe went down with an ankle after finding some form in their only loss of the season to Kilmore. That loss seemed to be the catalyst to a dominant second half of the year. Every challenger that fronted the Bombers were mercifully tossed aside. One of the key moves made over the off season was that of Brayden Allen into the ruck. He has developed into one of the top 3 ruckman in the competition and this week faces one of the others, it is sure to be a classic match up. The Bombers are highly skilled and relentless, they trust in each of their teammates to win any one on one contest and model their game around it. They like to isolate and hit up once they clear the football, it is their greatest strength, easily the most skilful of the sides in the competition. They also have such great balance as a side. Starting in the midfield they have their grunt in Climas and Cam Casson and the class in Matt Sammut and Blade. This tells the tale all over the ground, the have the perfect balance of grunt and class.
The Tigers come into this game on losing form, its never an ideal way to kick off a finals campaign, but the one thing the Tigers do have is discipline and the ability to turn that around. They have the best key position backmen in the competition in Leigh Irwin and Brett Caton, it will be interesting to see how these two are used on the weekend. Personally, I rate Caton as one of the best players in the competition, while James Wright has been the standout player of the year. If I had to pick players as part of a draft, Aaron James and Caton would be my first two picks. The Tigers should use Leigh Irwin on Mick Allen. Often Allen is matched with an opponent of similar height and blows them off the park, Irwin has both the pace and strength to go with Allen. Caton would then likely match up on Matt Baird, which will be a brilliant contest. The midfield holds plenty of responsibility in this game for the Tigers. Chris Collins, Luke Maunsell, Travis Smith and Benny John must give the Tigers forwards opportunity to win the game, last week they were on top in the stoppages, but didn't provide enough ball inside forward 50 which rendered the Tigers forwards useless. Brian Ruffell, John Baker and Nathan Carroll were all out of sorts last week and will need to bounce back here, the Tigers will be no chance if all 3 of these fail to fire again. The Tigers key is the ability to play for one another, they are a fantastic team and well balanced, they will need to call on those skills if they are to win here as in recent weeks the games I have seen, cracks have started to appear, just how much are the Tigers missing Simon Choate who had the ability to bring all of that together?

Game Key: Style. The side that best executes the style of game they want to play will control the game and the tempo. If the Bombers are able to get isolated match ups then the Tigers will find them too hard to contain, but if the Tigers can grind and ensure that they support one another at each contest around the ground, then they will be in the box seat. The Bombers will look to build from half back, the Tigers will look to build from stoppages. This contest could depend on the attitude that is taken out onto the ground.

Key Match-ups:
Brayden Allen (Rid) Vs Tom Waters (LF) - How can this not be the contest that most will be waiting to see. Both are high flyers, both can dominate the contest around the ground. Could play a massive part on the result of the game.
Michael Allen (Rid) Vs Leigh Irwin (LF) - Allen is a star forward in the competition, while Irwin is the stand out full back. This will be a really interesting contest if they do match up.
James Climas (Rid) Vs Chris Collins (LF) - Head down, arse up. Hard working and passionate about the performance of themselves and the side. These two going head to head at the feet of two of the best Rucks in the comp will be a treat.
Nick Ash (Rid) Vs Brian Ruffell (LF) - Whether Ash lines up on Ruffell or Baker will be the question, but the Bombers back him in. He has fantastic skills and can set the Bombers up from the backline. Ruffell just has to impact the scoreboard, the corresponding game last year he kicked 7. Can he repeat the dose?

Prediction: Clearly the best game of the weekend and one that so much rests on. While the Tigers lost this one last year and made it all the way to the GF and won it, they had a rough ride on the way and were almost knocked off by Diggers in the 2nd week. I am sure they would like to turn the tables this year. The Bombers are so very determined to make a statement this week.
Riddell by 16 points

Just a few issues why are they playing finals at boardman the ground isnt suitable for finals the Sunbury boys will be rapt. Leigh fishendon easily best ruckman in comp how didn't he get invite for team of year. Kangas need to really step it up this week have abit of belief that u guys can go all the way.Aaron James please stay in RDFL.

I agree Leigh Fishendon is clearly the best ruckman in the comp , have seen him Waters AND ALLEN all play this year if Fishendon is not in the team of the year something is very wrong .

Good luck to all teams in this years finals

Riddell by a few today, I have the slightest belief that the game was a bit over umpired today. Lancefield gallant, and i rate G. Caton. have faced him in cricket too, can bowl.

A great day of football all around at Romsey Park today...

First of all a shout out to the Redbacks who put on a fantastic final, the Redbacks BBQ is now the best in the competition...

Arrived at 3 quarter time of the Under 18's with the Cats holding a 4 goal buffer over Kilmore. A high quality last term though with the Blues pushing all the way to the final siren to take plenty out of the game. In the end there wasn't much between the two sides, the Cats getting up by 9 points.

The two's game was highly anticipated, a match up between two of the three sides capable of winning the 2010 flag. It was interesting to watch the Cats run out, a quick scan of the side showed that the Cats leading goal kicker was missing and when they took their positions, the only other player capable of kicking a bag of goals lined up at CHB, after looking a little deeper, it seemed that maybe a couple of older players had made their way into the Cats side that may not have played many games this year. Thought that was a little disappointing and it certainly showed early, one of those players who is the Cats coach, lined up in the ruck and unfortunately for the Cats was demolished by the experianced Mick Burnett... But overall the first quarter was a bit of an arm wrestle, both sides struggled to put a stamp on the game, even though the Bombers had Burnett, Anthony Power and Dean Besanko causing all sorts of headaches for the Cats. Scott Knight and Matt Goodwin were the best of the Cats along with Clinton Burgess up forward.
The start of the second quarter was all the Bombers. Aptly it was the "Bomber" show, Dean Besanko was dominant in the second term, whether it be marking on a lead or hitting the pack front and centre, Bomber was everywhere. While Power and Mick Sammut across half back were making it tough for the Cats. The Cats hit back with a couple of late goals to reduce the margin though and the sides went in at half time with the game still in the balance.
Early in the last term, it looked as though the Cats were starting to get on top of the Bombers, but then a switch flicked and Riddell took over. Mick Gadsden made the third quarter his, as the Bombers opened up a 5 goal lead, but again, a late goal to the Cats kept them alive.
The Bombers opened the last term with an early goal to effectively end the contest, both sides were trying hard, but as the quarter wore on, you could see the signs of time on starting to wear the players down. Plenty of players started to cramp and both sides kicked 2 goals for the quarter, with the Bombers running out 21 point winners.

My Votes
3 - Anthony Power, Excellent in the midfield all day.
2 - Dean Besanko, just a step ahead of everyone else.
1 - Mick Burnett, was completely dominant in the ruck, so much so that at times he didn't even have to move.

The highly anticipated senior game kicked off, the Bombers looked fired up, but it was the Tigers who came out full of agression. They executed exactly what they would have wanted to acheive before the game, it was something I hadn't seen from the Tigers since they took on the Kangaroos. They pressured every possession and put real focus on clogging up any football for the Bombers through the midfield. At most stages of the quarter the Bombers looked rushed and struggled to execute basic skills. When the ball went inside their forward 50, it came out just as easy as LeighIrwin and Brett Caton controlled the defensive 50 and Dale Joesph did the job on Mick Allen. The Tigers on the other hand, after they forced a turnover, they ran and carried the football and their foot skills were very impressive. All 3 forwards that struggled to have an impact last week were up and about, John Baker kicked 2 in the first quarter, the second a beautiful snap from the boundary. While Brian Ruffell provided an excellent target across the half forward line. While Nathan Carroll was causing early headaches. The Tigers worked themselves into a strong position with an early lead.
That lead the Tigers worked so hard to acheive was wiped out within the opening minutes of the second term. All of a sudden, the tables turned, the Bombers were now the ones executing the pressure, but streaming forward from the turnovers and giving their forwards plenty of opportunity. Haydn Ross dominated the quarter, he seemed to be everywhere, while the Tigers just couldn't seem to locate him. Allen kicked his first for the game. Jason Allen finally moved back to CHB and the Bombers just looked so much more stable when the move happened. Grant Puxley, who, by the way is a complete and utter JET, was dominant across the half back line, he was responsible for countless rebounds from the defensive 50, helped by the ever reliable Nick Ash. A 7 goal quarter for the Bombers and a strong lead at half time.
The third quarter was more the arm wrestle that the Tigers would have wanted. More contested ball and more stoppages, but the only thing that managed to acheive was the increased influence of James Climas. Gerard "Joel Selwood" Liddell was throwing himself into the contests (then throwing his head back) while Matt Sammut was excellent, his touch at times very important, as was Aaron Blade who was just getting better as the game went on. But this quarter was where a certain Bomber really put his stamp on the game. Brayden Allen was everywhere, and the Tigers just couldn't get past him. They needed to lift and the lift came, from Chris Collins once again, but he was ably supported by Dan Rebbechi who was playing a fantastic game for the Tigers. It was just hard to see where the Tigers were going to find their winners.
The last quarter saw the Tigers have one last roll of the dice. They threw everything at the Bombers, but once again, Riddell stood tall. Puxley, Ash, Blade and Robertson. They just continued to deny the Tigers. The closest Lancefield could get though was a couple of goals. In the end, the nail in the coffin was a 50m penalty against Chris Collins that resulted in a Cam Casson goal.
A strong result in the end for the Bombers, the end result by the scoreboard was 12 points, on the text message earlier it was 21 points, but the scores on the website have since been removed, so stand by for the confirmed final score.

My Votes

3 - Grant Puxley, such a talented youngster, was so very impressive today, not only his ability to win the ball, but his finishing was a stand out.
2 - Nick Ash, His job on Ruffell after quarter time was the reason the Tigers looked to have no match winner, another who's disposal is first class.
1 - James Climas, Hard at it, great around the stoppages. Loved the battle with Chris Collins

Apologies: Cam Casson, Daniel Rebecchi and Brayden Allen

What I learned from the game
  • Riddell really are just all class, they were under pressure early and some eyebrows were raised, but they just worked through it.
  • The Tigers midfield doesn't look as deep when they run around against the Bombers.
  • The Tigers will be begging for a Kangaroos win tomorrow.
  • The Reece look alike is doing his best to ruin Reece's rep :D From what I hear an umpire with a future when it comes to the next level, but a word of advice, this is the RDFL, just back out of the game a little..

couldn't fit tom waters in the best players ims? imo was the best player on the ground by a long way also liddell very unlucky not to make your best.

When it came down to the impact around the ground of both Tommy and Brayden, I thought Brayden had more of an impact on the game, but all in all they kind of negated the influence of each other...

Diggers Rest once again too strong for the Cats with a 21 point win, Shane Marchewka BOG according to Diggers rep.

Sunbury Kangaroos much too strong for Romsey, winning by 34 points.

Hay boys, i heard on the grape vine B/Ford might be on the move back to the HDFL,only one catch they will(HDFL) have to have U18's for them to move back.By all reports a few clubs in the HDFL are pushing for U18's next year

is there truth in this rumour?

100% no truth to the rumour. I did hear yesty that the HDFL are again lobbying for an under 18 comp - but it has nothing to do with Broadford who are committed to the RDFL for the long haul.

saturday at lancefield riddell v sunbury 1st and 2nds 18's riddell v macedon
sunday at rockbank lancefield v diggers kilmore v macedon kilmore v woodend

Well i ask you this Doona,is their going to be a B/Ford football club next season??????

My bloody oath there is rat  The president and his committee have done a bloody good job behind the scenes ensuring the club a future, and Im sure onfield will fall into place as soon as the AGM and an announcement of coaches occurs.

Dont think the joint can be solely judged on ladder positions, remember Billy took the reins the Thursday before the last praccy game having already lost 14-15 from the 2009 senior team.

Foreign territory for our club indeed being at the bottom, but with Webby in charge off field, and hopefully Billy going around again as coach Im sure you'll see a more competitive unit next year . . . . and as Yazz once said "the only way is up."

Now Grub! Surely you know you can't come on here and question the best players!! LOL

Great game today!

Kangaroos V Redbacks.

The first bounce will always be remembered. Just a massive clash of Body's. No Malice. Just 2 geniune ball players colliding!! It's what finals football is all about. Comiserations to Cam Dawson. Mitch Strieff went on to star for the Kangas. Romsey kicked themselves out of the game in the first quarter. Sunbury kicked 6 goals to 1 early in the second. Before Romsey snagged 3 in a row just before halftime.

The Start of the second half was all romsey and Sunbury were flat as pancakes. Sunbury slowly fought there way through the game and made the most of thier chances in the third. While Romsey again missed simple shots. Helmers 3 quarter time speech really hit home to the boys. And they got on top early. But to Romseys credit they refused to die. The final Scores did not pay Romsey there true justice. But I feel the best TEAM won on the day.

IMS will no doubt report best players. But the only two players who deserve being named were those to Stars who both put there body (unwittingly) on the line at the opening bounce. In that contest there was only one winner. If the result was different at the opening bounce. The result could of easily been different at the final siren.

The Riddell Lancefield scores came through as the Reserves scores from that day.. for memory, I think the Bombers got up with a scoreline of 12.10.82 to 10.9.69.. or something close to, received a text from someone at the game to say "good to see Riddell win by 13pts".. hmmm, doesnt matter tho :)

I was just looking at the fixture and saw that there are still 2 more games after this weekends games. Can anyone inform me about how the finals are structured this year?

Now Grub! Surely you know you can't come on here and question the best players!! LOL

Great game today!

Grow up mate

The only thing of value that you have ever added is the post that you contributed directly after this one, even though it is confusing in parts..

I will do a wrap up today.. (Did one last night but the stupid computer decided to freeze and wipe it all )
