Nope.
Considering this is only his third year and he's almost going to make the AA squad if he finishes up strong then that's nuts. It took Rance 7 years to make the AA squad.

Lever could be a hall of famer in the making.

It only took Ben Hart in his Rookie year to make the AA team. People forget about him when they talk about the best defender lists in the AFL.

In all this debate....we need to remember that both Lever and McGovern are NOT free agents. This immediately makes them more likely to stay than go....just like our mate w***erfield did until he could play for his club of choice. Any team that wants him has to trade with us....we need to hang tough and be prepared to dump a player into the draft if we don't get fair value in a trade. Then other turncoats will think twice before asking for out before paying off their development...which the Crows are obviously VERY good at.

Move two teams out, one to the NT and Tasmania. Move the grand final every year to a different location so everyone can see a GF in their life, not only the Afl and Victorian elite. Allow every club in the afl an academy and the ability to develop local talent. Have a national under 18s comp, not just championships with a national coaching structure. Make things more equitable, it's not hard.

Move two teams out, one to the NT and Tasmania- Never gonna happen, why alienate fans and move them away to places that can't sustain them, you'll lose fans which you'll never get back.

Move the grand final every year to a different location so everyone can see a GF in their life, not only the Afl and Victorian elite- AFL grand final is contracted to the MCG til 2032, not going anywhere plus its the highest attended final in the world why sacrosanct that.

Allow every club in the afl an academy and the ability to develop local talent- Fully agree with this

Not sure about this. Have to keep in mind that under the current open draft, we can have access (subject to having the required picks) to the top 26 rated draft prospects [ed. excluding other clubs' Father-Sons] from Vic/SA/WA.

If they move to the every Vic/SA/WA club having academies, and let's suppose each club then has matching rights to two players from their own academies and all the best potential players end up in the academies, then we would have no chance of drafting 26 of the best prospects since any we bid on would likely be matched by the corresponding academy.

Also by pure population numbers, Vic is currently about 6.2m, WA about 2.6 and SA about 1.7 so we are well behind in producing draft talent than other states (as indicated by recent draft outcomes) And how likely will they keep the Father-Son scheme (just as we start to get some) if an academy scheme is brought in?

On the other hand, maybe we could develop young players much better than what SA has been producing and at least the 1st/2nd round draftees we get would not be subject to the go-home factor.

Bad as the current system is for us (in terms of go-home factor), it might actually be the best for us.

I've got a theory on the Crows list management as it stands:

Last trade period we let Lyons go for nicks because he wanted a few more $$$
We also refused to pay overs for Gibbs....and chose to keep grandad Thompson for 1 more - non productive year.

Pending stumping up the required cash....I'd suggest Rocky has committed to leaving Brisbane and strolling into the Crows midfield next year.

This is why the Lever and McGovern deals are taking so long....we have positioned ourselves well to secure Rocky...but it will be a stretch to match outside offers being made to McGovern and Lever on top of this.

They are holding out to see how much of the kitty they can get....we are holding out in order to have enough $$$ to strengthen our midfield.

Who's going to blink first? ....we let Lyons walk....perhaps the extra mid will cost us one of McGovern or Lever.

If we can somehow secure all three...well...all is forgiven for trade period last year....as there was method to the madness.

It's a nice narrative and one I want to believe. However it doesn't fit the pattern of our club tbh.

Should be able to keep Lever and McGovern plus sign a mid.

No reason that a team that missed the finals twice followed by 6th, 6th finishes should be struggling to keep its list under the cap.

Especially with a lot of best 22 players being quite young

I don't care what mid we need or want.

We cannot lose Lever, we just can't!
Yes...It would be a blow...but the simple fact is the whole AFL system revolves around making it very difficult to assemble a team of elite stars....unless your a destination club and players are willing to pay for less. Obviously this is not happening at the Crows. So we are forced to chose carefully who we keep and who we let walk. No point keeping Lever and losing McGovern, Cameron and not being able to secure Rocky (assuming that's the plan)
NO single player is worth 3 starting 22 player yeah? ...it sucks....but that's what the salary cap does...now we have a good list....it's time to cough up some more talent to other teams below us. GWS are in the same boat....they just have more spare in the cupboard than we do :(

I don't think you know what sacrosanct means.

Yes...but our young players get SO much exposure being in a small 2 team town ...they all get noticed quicker by opposition clubs AND have a higher opinion of themselves as a result.

I think deep down almost every Crows player thinks they should be paid 600k plus a year....as they are all local heroes.

Unfortunately the club is continuously held to ran son and pays overs as a result ....so NO...our age profile is not helping at all :(

Collingwood aren't really showcasing a good appeal for Jake, can rule them out.

would prefer to keep Gov/Lever over getting Rocky, and id be pro getting Rocky (just not at their expense)

Ch7 news reported tonight that our offer to Lever is well short of interstate clubs . So as marty36 has been saying he'll stay if we pony up, but at this stage we haven't put a very good offer forward (compared to other teams )
Yep, 7 reported that without stating a source or quoting anyone at all.

What you heard is 7 reporting on what they read here

I think I agree with you...it's a lot harder to develop key backs and forwards than mids.

If we had 2 of the 3 in any combination there really is little gained. But I'd say the club is trying for a trifecta that would set it up for a serious tilt at the flag next year.

The main reasons for my thinking are, like you said, they will be around a long time (if they stay with us their careers) and fill positions hard to fulfil.

The concern for me with Rocky is he is a similar type of player to the Crouches (Brad in particular). While it would certainly give us some genuine ball winning and hard tackling with our midfield mix, we could still lack that classy exit player from congestion. Having said that if we kept the others then he would be a real good get, or if we lost one of the others and couldnt control it and so then got him, but not losing one in order to fit him in.

Id pay Lever the 800k as long as it was a minimum 5 year dear. I wouldn't agree to pay it to him for a 2-3 year deal as your overpaying in the development phase and then he will want another big contract entering his prime, but if you lock him in longer term then you spread that salary and its not so bad.

Interesting that Rocky has changed his narrative about his contract decision, he is no longer saying that he wants to stay at Brisbane and as late as this week has said that it will be a family decision

I Lever will definitely stay and McGovern is highly likely will stay and I think our cap can accomodate Lever, Shooter and a A grade mid

Dear Jake,

You look like the kinda guy who wants to win flags.

Here's a copy of the ladder this morning. We're in blue (the top), Victorian teams are orange (not top). If you go back to Victoria, here are the teams you're going to. Out of ten teams, six aren't even in the eight; the other four are Melbourne (meh), the Saints (no), the Tigers (really?) and Geelong (yuck).

Our money will come up - it may not reach the others, but who's going to win a flag?

sincerely yours,
deaneus

'bemused onlookers'

Wasn't it documented last year that Lever and his old man fell out with JMac over Taliagate? Pretty sure that was in the document leak expose the Hun ran around this time last year. Of true, hard to see him setting foot inside VUWO.

From the Hun:
Documents reveal the Dogs said they had “obtained a degree of independent corroboration” of the Talia allegations from a conversation between McCartney and the father of Crows defender Jake Lever, four days after the Bulldogs’ seven-point loss in the September 12 knockout final. Al Lever later accused McCartney of “ fabricating the story”.

I missed all this at the time. Have also seen
Quotes about Jake arguing with McCartney?? Anyone know what this was about?

That has never stopped a Victorian player going back to a Victorian team. I guess wallowing in mediocrity at the MCG almost every week is preferrable to winning flags. Go figure.
