If we were to search back through Big Footy history about those highlighted players there would be plenty of posts from plenty of posters, who now are hailing them as premiership heroes, suggesting that they're busts and should be moved on as soon as possible for something better and/or younger to replace them.
Yeah RT, you and I have been around here long enough to know how it goes.

Grimes, Rance, Edwards, Astbury, Broad, Short, Castagna, Lambert, McIntosh, Bolton, Balta, Butler, Houli, Grigg, Nank, Soldo, Baker, Pickett, Townsend

I took a look at the list and (honestly) tried to remember my early opinions on these players.
Potential Star: Rance (desperation), Astbury (mobile CHF), Bolton (electric mid), Baker (so clean)
Senior Regular: Grimes, Edwards, McIntosh, Butler, Grigg, Nank, Soldo
Depth: Castagna, Lambert, Broad, Townsend, Balta, Pickett
Delist: Houli (soft), Short (too short, not a mid)

Nailed a couple early (Rance and Bolton), underestimated triple premiership players Castagna, Lambert and Broad, got it totally wrong on a 2x nearly Norm Smith medallist and a B&F winner.

Just looking at our rookie list, we have pickett stack Miller and biggy, aarts and Parker. If Jack, caddy edwards and cotchin retire at the end of the year we have 4 draft picks, but we also need to clean up those who may not make it and upgrading 2 to 4 of the rookies could work well. We then renew our rookie list.

I know we have mentioned we need genuine a grade top draft picks, but stack and sonsie were both top 5 picks. If we can get them right then i think this end of season depositions us really well going forward with the 3ish picks a year as others retire/ get cut. We are thereabouts gents, just lots of development into sonsie and stack to get them right, and i think all last years draftees could be best 22 next year.

Sorry should have said the above is about us keeping it to top 50 draft picks or so (So top 3 really) as past that point its unlikely the player will help much, so having 7 or 8 go together would lead us to draft picks in the 70s or 80s or towards delisted free agents whixh probably aint building well (look at north when they got rid of too many players per year). The clear out doesnt work unless players bring in a draft spot like chop and ccj did for us

How much salary do you reckon we free up with Cotchin, Riewoldt, Edwards & Caddy gone?

Clearly rebuild and anyone seeing different is watching a different team IMO.

I’d love us to draft some young gun mids but ultimately next couple of first rounders should go to the new spine. Need a gun tall forward with a top 5 pick soon.
I gather you don't have high hopes for Balta? Another mid out best cotch is most likely gone we need mids mids and a couple more mids we are shyte in that department.

Don't understand people getting on Balta's back.

he can play back, he can contribute forward. He does not have the enduro for mid but can still impact and is valuable

We have been getting monstered down back and he ain't doing much up forward.

This weeks game is huge crossroads for tigers.

A loss to west coast could potentially begin a pivot in this seasons strategy. I’ve got no doubt the club firmly has a plan A and a plan B.

A loss this week will force plan B into action.

He is only going to learn and develop from new experiences though.

At the same time players like Gibcus are improving out of sight so its a win win.

For example kick the ball long from outside 50 so the umpires become more aware to stop telling him to play on when taking a shot well outside 50

I remember the days when everybody used to say talls take time

We had the patience to wait until 23/24 before we declared them a player or bust

amazing how things change

This Draft we have 3 picks in 1st 2 rds & Norf are doing us a huge favour there, 1 KPF & 2 inside mids should be our target this yr. Add that to the 5 picks we got last yr & we've done very well in the Draft the last 2 yrs for the future.

He even signaled he was going for goal and was setting up when called play on lol I guess he was lucky it was play on as raising a hand to point might have been pinged for abuse lol

Just need to announce it's a rebuilding season this year and next. Then the attitude around the club changes...

The problem is the club did all these media saying watch out we are back etc and they will look stupid if they do.

Why would they formally announce it? It's not the UN.

B: J.Gibcus, N.Balta, D.Grimes
HB: L.Baker, N.Vlastuin, D.Rioli
C: K.McIntosh, J.Short, S.Edwards
HF: J.Castagna, K.Lambert, S.Bolton
F: T.Lynch, S.Stack, J.Riewoldt
FOLL: T.Nankervis, D.Prestia, R.Collier-Dawkins
I/C: N.Broad, J.Graham, I.Soldo, M.Rioli
EMG: B.Nyuon, J.Aarts, R.Mansell, J.Ross

Really hope that last nights result doesn't change the narrative of playing a good mix of senior experience and developing kids. I think that change has brought back some energy and excitement to the line up. I can see the temptation to bring in all the experienced guys and try to make a run, but again looking at the bigger picture, getting these kids brought up to speed will serve us better long term and if we happen to make finals and have a deep run while doing this it's an even better outcome as the kids will be exposed to some big games that will help them develop even more.

For mine what I'd like to see continue:

  • Balta and Baker left in the back line, I've said all year that Balta needs to develop chemistry alongside Gibcus as they can be the foundation of our back 6 for a decade. Baker had much more impact down back in 1 game than he had all season prior to last night.
  • Short in the midfield playing a sweeper role, just worked so well and he looked like a natural centreman covering plenty of ground as he linked up between the D50 and F50 and his foot skills become so much more damaging up around the middle of the ground going into F50.
  • Keep playing a mix of Dow Ross RCD Ralphsmith Sonsie & Banks as part of the midfield mix where possible to allow them to develop with senior players there to cover for their inexperience.

It's building nicely and I'm quite excited about what I'm seeing.

Was taking a look at our list of players who will be 26 and under at years end and we do have an ok looking list on paper. Of course as most of us already know, we have a major issue with no key forwards.

I highlighted Balta because I think the club knows he is probably a better key back but know our need for a key forward is going to be desperate.

In saying that I think our Key back line is pretty solid going forward. I was also surprised and I shouldnt be that Stack is only 22.

Crazy to think the were a big chance to finish this round inside the top 8 with the next three very winnable games to come.

Great post. Shows we need to draft a key fwd desperately! add 2 inside mids with our picks as well

So it looks like we've now reached the fork in the road in regards to whether we're going full rebuild or more of a freshen up of the list. 8 weeks in and we've seen M. Rioli, Mansell, RCD, Stack, Miller, Ralphsmith, Dow, Gibcus & Ross been given opportunity to stake a claim for the 22 with different levels of success so far. Maurice Ralphsmith Dow Gibcus & Ross have been quite successful with only injury stopping HRS & Dow from still being in the side, while Gibcus already looks like a veteran. Ross has been a victim of the squeeze IMO as you could argue his form was good enough to hold his spot if we were in a full rebuild

However now we've got the premiership heroes up and running, the squeeze is going to be on for spots, which in itself is a good thing as it will mean the younger kids are performing well at either VFL or AFL level, but the question becomes how long can we hold back younger players who are deserving of a chance before the start to become disillusioned with whether they are a realistic chance of playing senior footy or not, which means some might start looking for opportunity elsewhere.

As we saw yesterday we had the likes of Ross Dow Sonsie put their hands up for selection, but will likely need to wait a bit longer before they get a crack given we're coming off 2 very good performances, but again, how long do you go without rewarding good form at the lower level over 'average' form at the higher level.

For mine I think we'll be much better served long term rewarding the kids who are showing good form and giving them a crack at playing senior footy to show them that consistent good form will always be rewarded, which will keep the fringe players hungry and pushing for selection. If they feel that they aren't a chance of being rewarded they'll become disinterested and simply start going through the motions.
