Interesting list.

For years I’ve sort of kept tabs on the most recent “year” premiership player to have died.

Darren Millane had that unfortunate distinction until Chris Mainwaring died. The 1994 flag team is the most recent to lose a member.

Whilst it’s a bit morbid, in horse racing the most recent Melbourne Cup winning trainer to die, is the late greatest of them all in Bart Cummings (2008 being his last win).
With jockeys it’s John Marshall (1999 on Rogan Josh).

This made me think - how many of the last Melbourne and St. Kilda premiership teams in 1964 and 1966 are still alive?

At present, 14 of the 20 Melbourne 1964 premiership team are still alive. Neil Crompton, Robert 'Tassie' Johnson, Tony Anderson, Don Williams, Frank 'Bluey' Adams and Peter McLean have all passed away, along with coach Norm Smith. Don Williams was the first player to die in 1995, while Tony Anderson only died two weeks ago.

Of St Kilda's first (and to this day only) premiership side of 1966, 17 of 20 players are still alive. Three players - Rodger Head, Darrell Baldock and Travis Payze - have since died, along with coach Alan Jeans.

That’s a pretty good living rate all things considered.

may it long continue.

He made his name as a dour, close-checking full back, but later put some of the knowledge gained to paradoxically good use as a full forward.
Doug captain-coached Westies in 1963 and 1964 and was skipper under Don Taylor’s coaching in 1965. He played five times for South Australia, kicking six goals. After his retirement as a player he embarked on a lifelong administrative and managerial career with the club.

Graeme Watson Cricketer for Australia and footballer for Melbourne 1964-65 . 18 games

8/3/1945 - 24/4/2020 75 yrs

I think the Australian selectors were looking at taking him to South Africa, but it was claimed he was of “mixed blood”, so the Saffers didn’t want him playing.

Next week, the AFL will host a very different to normal Hall of Fame week-long series of induction reveals, rather than the usual single event. Normally during this event, they have a memorial montage of those who have died during the past year. They normally also tend to omit some significant people.

So whilst I don't know if they will still do the memorial segment this year, this is a list of notable people who've died this year. Have I missed any?
This is my main data source. My criteria for inclusion is over 100 games, recent player, premiership player or very notable in other leagues or administration. Note that because it uses an "Australian rules football player" as the search tool, it may miss umpires, coaches, administrators etc, and because it uses Wikipedia, it is likely to miss some non V/AFL players.

Others who died, but played less than 70 V/AFL games, and not much (that I know - happy to learn more) outside of the V/AFL include (in decreasing order of V/AFL games played):
Kevin Hogan, Tom Allsop, Brian Falconer, Peter Hamilton, Don Howell, Stan Smith, Bruce Murray, Terry Board, Doug Cox, Fred Wain, Tony Bull, John Williams, Tony Thiessen, Graeme Watson, Mack Atkins, Robert Hickman, Ray Brain, Rod Payne, Roger Hoggett, Jack Lawrence, Bill Welsh, Tom McNeil, John Wilson, Bruce Gonsalves, John D'Arcy, Roy Eliason, Ralph Edwards, Alan McAsey, Don Benson, Ian Drohan, Jim Cusack, John Curtin, Bob Wright, Dave Meehan & Irwin Lewis

Not so recent, but I was having a read through the All-Australian team page on Wikipedia and checking out which of the players were still redlinked. The very few that were were representatives in Sporting Life's 'Team of the Year' from the late '40s and early '50s. Lyle Griffin (incorrectly spelt as Lyall Griffin, which I've since corrected) had two honours, was a Magarey Medal runner-up, 11-time state rep, yet no Wiki page. That's beside the point, but looking at his Australian Football page, there is no date of death. Unfortunately he has since passed away – I saw this tribute – but I don't have an exact date for the page. Anyone got any answers? Cheers.
