Top right: Eckelt is available.

But that's gotta be a typo.

Surely that's Eckert...

You guys turn over a heap of those 185cm 85kg mid-types every year. Seems to be a formula in your recruiting.

Anyway, I wouldn't be surprised to see Port look at one of your fringe talls in a trade. I can't see Newton commanding much of a draft pick unless Geelong are super keen.

In terms of fringe talls Brown would be the only one available I'd think. He's a bit of an enigma really. Looks great one moment with silky movement and elite skills and then is unsighted for the next half. He's too talented not to be on an AFL list but if Frawley comes to Geelong he'll be a long way back in the queue and in his 7th season.

Jones for Butcher?? Gives both players a chance to re-start their careers. We aren't losing anything either.

essentially give up a guy who has talent , but has struggled to stay fit and has terrible kicking for a guy who has athleticism and height , but no idea how to play as a forward.

ild take the long odds of butcher staying healthy and gaining something resembling a kicking action over tall with athleticism. which always seems to come and go. i could be wrong with jones but ive seen too many tall guys who can run but dont know how to play football to know that it is easier to correct a shocking kicking action , then to teach someone how to play as a forward.

Really really don't want to lose Newton, feel he will be a gun and come back to bite us. Like him more than Young, Moore or Mitchell. Would trade all of those before i'd trade newton or oshea.

What's the "knock" on Taylor Hunt from your perspective? I was surprised in last years Semi when he was the sub against us, and seemingly hasn't got a look in this year. Initially, as in earlier this year, I was thinking he may be useful to be our tagger after Kornes, however I would now like to think that we have someone "better" than Hunt being prepared in the background ourselves.

I think his biggest problem is that his best position is as a gut running midfielder but he's probably not quite good skilful eenough to be a really good midfielder at AFL level. His defensive work around the stoppages isn't good enough for him to be an effective tagger and he's not composed enough with the ball to be a quality small defender. Really he does almost everything in the game pretty well but doesn't do anything well enough to have a clear position where he is best suited to.

He reminds me a bit of Matt White but with slightly less pace (Hunt's quick but not that quick). You could do worse than getting him as depth but you'd probably prefer a youngster with a higher ceiling instead. I'd expect him to go to a team low down and look pretty good for them as a midfielder next year. It doesn't change the fact he's probably not good enough to be a mid at a team competing for the flag. I'd imagine if we trade him to a team like StKilda for their 3rd rounder (~pick 40) then this would be what we offer for Newton. Then I guess if he wants to go you'd probably accept that but if he wants to stay then he stays.

Thanks for the insight. I agree with the "skill" issues when compared to others in your midfield rotations, as well as your comment regarding foot speed - I think he is quick enough. However, with deficiencies in defensive pressure, and a poor-ish ability to get his own ball, it won't work at Port in my view. You likely know that KH places a huge emphasis on both of those things, so they are non negotiables for us. I expect that we will not entertain trading ANYONE in for "depth", aside from perhaps a back up back up ruckman just in case things go south with Redden again.

If we are trading, we are trading for players that SHOULD be playing in our first 22 and improving our team immediately. A large number of port people nearly threw their toys out of the cot when we got Matt White last year...after all he was only a bit part player at Tigerland. But Kenny got him on board, seeing something that most couldn't or didn't and has proven himself able to play his role and have a great influence on our team.

Cheers again for your input.

Any reason a bunch of my friends on FB are worried Port may get Stanton as well? - Haven't seen anything about him...

Nah... Would be too much fun. Although if we happen to get Paddy for nothing we could offer our 1st round pick.

I would like Paddy Ryder to join us.

Yes and it seems the compensation that Essendon is asking for seems fair and reasonable.

Make it work.

They did the 'gimme something' segment on 7's Game Day & Richo said Port are into more ruckman than Paddy Ryder & he said Luke Lowden will definitely be joining us as well.

Can't say how glad I am that we're bringing in 2 ready made ruckmen to help Lobbe out next year & provide back up should injuries occur.

"do you even ruck bro"?? that's the phrase our recruitment team & ken will be using for any future players brought in this year.

you would think long term contract term would have a lot to do with this. knowing Ryder is already on his way it would have to be combination of job security and game time being available if Lobbe were to miss.

If we land Lowden and Ryder we are pretty much sorted. Gives us three solid rucks with Redden allowed to get his body right. All three are different in their game style and we have Trengrove and Westhoff as back up. Shaw even had a crack for the Maggies. Nice big tick!
