Red cards in AFL?

its not the worst idea, maybe if they reviewed incidents at the breaks and didnt let them back on the field. The biggest problem I see is deciding what offence constitutes a red card. The Gaff hit for sure should be a send off. What about Hurn 2 weeks earlier against Honeychurch. He got him in the head accidentally and faced no suspension from the MRP. On the day though he might get red carded and sent off.

The AFL doesnt have a great record of implementing rules in a clear thought out manner.

Yeah bring em' in I say. If you put a bloke out of the game whether it's in the first minute or in the last minute, that should be the end of the day for you too.

Agreed 100%. The Jez Cameron and Gaff hits should have been immediate red cards.

My concern is the Howe on Cripps hit. Does that get a card too? What about a big sling tackle that leaves someone concussed?

Would have to come down to how much malice was carried with the action, something that would need to be left to the umpire to decide no doubt.

It's inevitable that people will find problems with inconsistencies in rulings but I'm happy to cop a few people getting away with things that others have been ejected for if it means players like Gaff get booted immediately.

Hawthorn bias much? What part of deliberately punching a guy in the head makes a sending off questionable?

The only way a red card could work would be to firstly sin-bin the player for 10 mins. During that time the video umpires review the incident to determine whether it's worthy of a send off.
I like that idea.
My main worry is that its another thing for the umpires to think about.
It needs to be taken out of their hands

Not for one moment condoning what occurred yesterday, I grew up watching rubbish like that on a weekly basis - there is no place for it in the game.

BUT - This game has existed for over 100 years without a red card rule, I would't be changing it now - I have no faith the AFL would get this red card thing correct, it would just be another cluster **** like the goal review system.

Increase the size of the fines & make them liable ... In my book, Gaff should be paying the AFL a $50k-100k fine for that snipe AND covering all medical expenses / damages for the kid involved

Of course bring it in for the most server cases.

Why should a team be penalized for having a player KO behind play and out of the game ? Makes no difference to that team that lost the player how many weeeks the perpetrator gets after the game.

Im talking intentional hits that cause the victim to not play the game out. Barry Hall, Vickery, Gaff, Cameron etc

I am 100% in favour of a red card rule in the game however it should only be in place for the absolute worst incidents where someone is illegally taken out of the game and the perpetrator's team gets the benefit of an extra man. I would actually be happy if they limited it to off the ball deliberate incidents like Gaff (and Barry Hall) and where someone has been knocked out through a flying arm or hip and shoulder (the Jeremy Cameron or Byron Pickett rule).

Everyday incidents that dont impact on the victim's ability to keep playing should be left to the tribunal as it always has been.

You want to be careful what you wish for.

Remember we used to have a 15 metre penalty rule for deliberately wasting time? Players are abusing the rule and deliberately holding onto opponents to prevent the ball from being transported downfield. So they lengthened it to 50 metres. Stopped the deliberate wasting time, but we now see 50 metre penalties being handed out for just about any reason you can imagine ... time wasting or not.

I could see red card working well for awhile, but after that we'd see players getting sent off for all sorts of reasons. We seem to have this mindset at the moment that if someone gets hurt, someone has to pay for it.

Classic footy. Something happens therefore we need to change a rule because it would've been good to have the rule in place before the thing happened.

If we want red cards in the AFL then how about the rules committee or whoever sit down and introduce them in the off-season.

I have no issue whatsoever with a field umpire or video umpire sending off Andrew Gaff, but I hate the idea that in Rd 20 we need a send off rule when we apparently didn't for rounds 1-19.

Avoid red cards like the plague. Only matter of time before someone gets sent off in a 50/50 call and we will be talking about the benefits of this rule forever.

I love how advocates say it will only be used for "obvious" decisions. Who defines obvious...the AFL? They will change the rules at a whim depending on what the public mood / media is.

Neymar flopped, trying to get a red card against.

Suspend the player, for the next time they play the team they infringed on.. I.E. Gaff doesn't play against the Dockers for 7 matches

I think there should be one. All it will take is one incident in a Grand Final for it to happen. The problem will be where the line is drawn. If the Cameron hit on Andrews is a send off, does that mean the Carlisle hit on Riewoldt is also a send off?

I see so many frailties with introducing a red card system. They already can't get video technology right and umpires are prone to human error and making howlers. Can see this blowing up in the AFL's face even though there will be the odd warranted case for a red card.
