Red cards in AFL?

My first thought is that it's open to manipulation. The 22nd-best player from side A drops his head into the best player from side B and cops a knock. Club doctor subsequently rules he is unfit to return. Net win to side A.

If change is needed, punish harder. Too late to change the rules for Gaff, but 8- and 10-week suspensions weren't uncommon in the early years of the game.

And/or allow an unlimited number of substitutions (as opposed to interchange).

Who said anything about this one player going off in exchange for another? The reason to bring red cards in is for flagrant shit like what Gaff did.

Yes, let's have the same people who do such a bang up job on goal reviews, deliberate OOB, and protected zones make decisions that will probably influence games far more significantly on a routine basis.

I agree with this post, too many grey areas because of the MRP lotto.

Another example is Burton knocking out Higgins earlier this year. Could have tackled, chose to bump, general consensus was 3-4 week suspension yet cleared by the MRP. Biggest issue will be a red card offence yet subsequently cleared by the MRP.

what justice is there if it happens in the first 2 minutes of the GF? Imagine if Dusty has his jaw broken and goes off

The choice is the AFL have a red card system or the opposition has to take out one, two or three of the opposition. That doesn't make sense in today's society or workplace.

My issue is this, when was the last time a player king hit a ‘star’ to take them out of the game? I can remember plenty of reactive punches, but not one in the last decade seemed particularly premeditated.

I can’t comment on the others, but Rugby (Union if you must) the cards are mostly controversial. Players still whack each other off the ball for no punishment. The system in Rugby, in my opinion, is garbage.

I'm pro red but it must be clear cut

a bump within 5ms of the ball is not red cardable and a unanimous umpire decision would be a reasonable control to avoid a "trigger happy" concern

What about have the two coaches agree? I know coaches will err on the side of protecting their players, but it ensures the right decision is made and if a coach plays funny buggers, the player gets more weeks at the tribunal...

As soon as they bring it in, slowly but surely more and more incidents will be red carded. Look at who gets reported and suspended these days. Used to be king hits, punches and elbows. Now touching an umpire, or tackling gets you suspended

Deep into the 3rd qtr on a close game, coaches desperately trying to work out a new approach to give their side an advantage, and then have to take a break to watch replays of an off the ball incident involving a star player to see if it crosses the threshold for being sent off.

You are suggesting tonight's snipe wasn't red card worthy? The ball was long gone & well beyond 5m. For mine that act could we'll set the standard for a red card moving forward.
