Hopefully the signing of Phillip Hughes will change a few things.![]()
Bloody oath.... He will hit bucket loads of runs at Adelaide Oval.... And free up a spot for another gun NSW kid.... Win/Win
I rate Hughes. Don't forget that Hayden, Langer Damien Martin started off their test career very slowly and were dropped and left out of he test side for 2 or 3 summers before becoming a regular. The kid has talent, what he needs to do now is mature and develop the poor parts of his game. Hopefully batting on the Adelaide Oval will allow that to happen.
The kid can play and will score mega runs for SA and then Australia.
and had what, 3 or 4 centuries to his name before his 21ast birthday can play the game.i don't care what any armchair critic says, anyone that represents their country in cricket at 20 or 21 is seriosuly talented! fantastic signing!
Spot on.... Every batter from our golden period was dropped at some stage including Ponting and the Waughs...
2010/11 - T20 champs
2011/12 - One Day champs
2012/13 - ??
The ?? obviously needs to be filled in, but we are putting players in place that could deliver us a big one.. a seriously good side is being put together here..
Was Ponting?
Steven Waugh famously was for his brother Mark but I can not remember Ricky Ponting getting dropped. Maybe for a very short period, but it wasn't for a long patch (12-18 months) was it?
pretty sure punter only ever got dropped for a couple of tests, and i think it was more for his extra caricular activities than his form
Great news for SA. Probably not quite ready for International Cricket, but has the ability to be star. Fantastic signing.
He just needs to tone down some parts of his game. When it sticks in his head the parts of his game that are his weakness and not allow teams to get him out those ways, he will be a run machine at test level. Steve Waugh cut out the hook and pull behind square from his shots, bowlers still bowled there but he wouldn't play the shots anymore. He became a more compact player but scored lots of runs because of it and so will Hughes.
Mere mortal players have to get better at their game when they get worked out at international level, it is very rare a Gilchrist comes along with an eye like his ( jeez I miss watching him bat)
a mans gotta know his limitations... not saying my theory will work at test level... but i put away the cut shot until im on roughly 40 and or/feeling good enough to play it. Im rubbish at it early but can be a good shot for me later in the game... If Philby can grind his way to 40 (or whatever) before he starts playing certain riskier shot outside off, it might go a long way.True, to a degree. Waugh never scored a great deal of runs from the pull shot even when he was playing it, so it made sense for him not to play it. Phil Hughes scores most of his runs slashing outside off stump. He needs to keep playing his natural game IMO, but tighten up his technique, specifically which ball to leave. Nothing would be better than Hughes opening the batting for Australia with Dave Warner...
