It's a shame he didn't play the week before against WCE.

Yesterday was a tough game to shine.

Hopefully he gets another chance soon.

Reef seems to have all the physical attributes but he looks totally bereft of confidence. Even in the VFL his kicking for goal looks shaky. Is it stage fright or is he just not ready yet, or not going to be up to it?

You can see Reef's mind ticking over when he runs in to shoot for goal. He needs to take a leaf out of AJ's goalkicking book. Simplicity itself.

My understanding is that they were expected to be great mids in the under 18s, but didn't actually play there because covid hit in their final year of u18s. The previous year played flanks.

That's my recollection. From memory, Reef got a few midfield games when teammates (Rowell & Anderson?) were of playing in the champs in 2019. Played predominantly HBF other than that. Don't remember that he played a lot of midfield in his draft year, played more HFF, but missed most of the year with injury.

I think people are going a little hard on him. Played 11 games, 6 of them as the sub, and 1 of those he didn't get any game time. Missed a couple of opportunities Monday but to me the more important thing is he's getting into positions to get those opportunities. He wasn't the only 1 missing opportunities. Happy for him to get more opportunity when there's a spot.

Based on his VFL games, think the club sees him more as a forward who gets an occasional run through the midfield.

Unlucky for Reef , Pendles shapeshifted into Tay Adams a couple of times and shanked passes that would've given Reef shots from inside 50.
Reef is a work in porgress - you can clearly see he has the attrivutes, and I trust our coaching / development team to finsh the job ..as Alistair Clarkson siad in an interview i saw, some players are ready when arriving some are two year and some take up to 4 years.. As the famous line said "Patience Grasshopper"

5 full AFL games... Definitely not a sample size to make judgements.

And his two starting games this year we're our losses when we were too sloppy to give our forwards good looks.

I'm not sure the Reef as a young JDG style forward thing is going to work, sadly.

He doesn't appear to be a very good mark overhead nor be able to effectively create seperation 1v1 the way De Goey used to.

He has some upside though. I'd personally like to us go to the drawing board and figure out a new role to develop him in. Could go alright in the Daniel Rioli type role off half back?

Who pigeon holed him as a forward? When he was drafted wasn't he a half back that was going to become an inside mid?

He's not going to be a forward at AFL so time to play him somewhere else
I think it’s more that he’s viewed long term as a midfielder that rotates forward, ala DeGoey. Given he doesn’t yet have the tank to play midfield, they’re developing the forward element of his game first, and will expand from there when he is physically ready.

He's a real **** knows for me. I don't think he's got innate footy smarts, but he's got innate footy physical attributes. At the moment he just looks really panicky at AFL level, but that could just be nerves that will settle - or not.

Hes a lovely handball and distributing linkman through stoppages.
Imho I think he should try to become a Daniel Kerr style of tough handballing stoppage player.
Also does the basics very well.
Tank is the problem rn.

I think Reef is a confidence player. He needs to play a midfield role so he can get his hands on the ball early and be involved in the game.

To be given that a opportunity though, he needs to go away in the off-season and put more size on and build his tank.

He also needs to go back to fundamentals like working on his skills and improve his marking.

Putting on more size and building his tank are likely mutually exclusive. If he’s not a good runner already, getting heavier is more likely to make him worse, not better.

Doesn’t seem to be affecting Quaynor and Nick too much

Just play him in the midfield at VFL level and let him build into what we recruited him for.
I know on here we thought we'd recruited an inside mid, but I just haven't seen anything that makes me view him as a likely midfielder.

He's got potential as a forward. Just think hes a bit panicky and doesn't have the smarts yet. I'd be playing him in defence for the time being.

I don’t think McInnes has the running power/endurance to play as a mid or the instincts and assertiveness to play as a forward at AFL level. Perhaps he can make it as a defender but I have my doubts that he can overtake all those in front of him for that role.

Ultimately I think Reef will probably be delisted at end of contract and will wind up being a solid VFL player.

Definite possibility, although I think he'll get given longer than most due to his physical attributes.

Hardly any in a row as well.

needs to be backed in for a block and just told to back himself in and not worry about mistakes. I agree he looks nervous like he is going to be dropped the following week.
