Happy to give Reef a chance to prove himself down back. The thing about Murphy was that he was a combative, competitive beast who stuck to the task relentlessly. He would have been a pain in the neck as an opponent because he just never let up. He also wasn’t shy of giving Moore and his fellow back men a bit of stick on occasion which I liked. If Reef can bring these traits consistently he’ll make a spot for himself as neither Frampton nor Dean have been able to bring the heat consistently throughout games thus far.

Will be interesting to see how he goes down back. I hope we develop him also as a defensive midfielder because he has a lot of weapons that could shut down some superstars of the comp that none of our other players have other than Allan.

Reef was a midfielder in junior footy? I thought I remember him being talked about as a big body midfielder.

He has obviously kept growing so now just tall enough to be key position, but if you haven’t played key forward or back growing up you won’t all of a sudden become a great key tall at AFL level. He’s going to need time.
No. He was a utility, primarily played defence, but did have some time up forward and a run through the midfield for about 3 weeks when his older team mates were playing for vic metro. He killed it in the midfield in that very short period which made the club view him as a potential big bodied mid. He was 194cm when he was drafted, hasn’t grown much if at all since then.

Pexy, are you trolling GC?

What I see as Reef's weakness has nothing to do with physical ability. It's more a case of built like Tarzan, plays like Jane, in that he seems averse to physical contact and his decision making and footy IQ are poor.

Maybe I am being harsh given he is 194cm and only 22 years old! I think I am being harsh, as players above 190cm traditionally take longer to learn to use their bigger bodies properly. Patience is required as I believe he can come good, and the move down back may help him understand the movements of the ball and reading the play. I also hope we don't keep changing his position as I think that will take away from his development.

The 194cm McInnes has been thrown into defence after 20 games and 19 goals across three seasons at the other end and looked strong against an admittedly young Richmond side on Wednesday.

“I am a massive Reef McInnes fan, I loaded up on his stocks early,” said Quaynor.

“I played at Oakleigh with him and he was a defender back his Under-18 days for a period of time. He was really dominant so the move to defence didn’t surprise me. He’s had a really great pre–season and he has a ferociousness and the roles we are giving him he doesn’t need to do anything extraordinary.

“He can do it in the air and on the ground and he will have some pretty big match-ups throughout the year. It’s exciting for him to come out and hopefully be part of the mix in round zero.”

In his fifth year. It’s why some of us remain doubters. But very hopeful doubters.
I agree. I'm in the same boat. Have doubts, but am hopeful and would love Reef to prove my doubts unworthy and establish himself as a player. It's all in front of him if he wants it. It won't be from a lack of opportunity.

Yep I’d be surprised. I like good surprises though.

I suspect the goal will be 2022 Murphy - inconspicuous cog in defence holding down his role in a pretty defensive manner. I'm not really a fan, but think he'll be able to do it.

I don't see any similarity to Murphy. Completely different mindsets. Murphy was unique in that he knew where to position himself in order to be able to impact a contest and had a no prisoners taken approach.

Reef has admirable traits like speed, height and neat disposal.... but smarts and sheer want to impact the contest I haven't yet seen. I am hopeful can do that with experience....

I'm more just saying that I don't think he'll have a big responsibility and will just get a man to play defensively.

In 2022 Murphy just played a tight negating role. Most thought that recruiting a genuine tall in Frampton would push him out of the team. His footy jumped about 3 levels in 2023 and he became a contest killer.

Okay, I get you. I hope you are proven right. I would love to see Reef do that and take steps forward into his career as a valuable player to our best 22!

Maynard took a few years to get going as well. Having said that I was more confident of Maynard making it than I am of Reef.

Looks like Reef is a certain starter for round 0 over Frampton. Unless his performances are terrible, I’d like to see him get a good run of senior games down back, would be a shame if he got dropped after 1 or 2 games but I guess he doesn’t have the advantage of being able to develop for longer since it’s already his 5th season.

That would be nice. Hopefully he can.

We can speculate all we want but we won't know for sure about reef till he's played a few games in a row. He was good and bad in the practice match. Reef has plenty of ability and I hope he makes it because we bloody need him. We actually need him to be better than good because 8f Darcy goes down we are in a bit of trouble

I’d say let’s give him a go before we give up on him. 😂
