Injuries are going to be a huge factor in positioning for the 8.
Magpies lost Tom Phillips tonight and the Lions have lost Harris Andrews.
Hopefully we come out without any injuries in the next couple weeks.
Playing WCE without Shuey is a bonus , hopefully they have some more misfortune.

Anyway when finals come we will need to lift and our prime movers will have to be playing there best football
Marshall , Steele , Hill , Billings , Jones need to be killing it.

Yep this will be huge. Players are going down everywhere at the moment. Getting through the game this week unscathed would be a huge bonus.

See us finishing 6 or 7 playing Dee's Collingwood or GWS in first final.

Should win that and then come up against the better performed sides all year of whom we only beat Port....so reckon that's where we now out. 5th or 6th.

Which is a stunning result all things considered.

Also it is where we have mostly occupied most of the season lower half of the eight and also where we rank in terms of percentage.

King Clark Coff Gresh better next year.
Get another solid mid in probably Crouch or back/mid in Williams.

There will be blood letting at GWS as they do not make the 8....probably coach goes and we could snare by swapping picks for Caldwell.

Good character building season...sets us up for 2022 tilt
Well we actually beat Port and Richmond and haven’t played West Coast yet. So only lost to Geelong and Brisbane

If they've signed Leon up, they'll be stuck with him. They should have grabbed Ross Lyon to grow them some pubes.

I can't even believe people are talking about winning a final again.

Let's worry about getting there first, which would be a huge achievement for the club from where we were last year.

That should be what we expect though. Even Richo with injuries and a shitter list could get us just outside the 8. Ratts should be expected to take us up a peg. You have to set expectations a bit higher every year. I think Richo's time was all about just getting through another year without losing his job. We have a new coach and have thrown the chequebook and draft picks in to get foot in now. If we miss finals again it will undo a lot of hard work and the players are running out of excuses. If this campaign doesn't work we could be looking like North Melbourne very quickly.

We were a bottom 6 side last year and we currently have the least experienced side in and around the 8.

A finals berth would be a good result. Anyone expecting more is just setting themselves up for disappointment.

Didn't you say we had a similar standard list to Hawthorn and worse than Essendon and Melbourne?

If that's the case we have already over achieved.

We were bottom 6 because we had so many injuries though. Yes I think our list sits between 8 and 13 kind of level. It puts us in with sides like Carlton, Hawks, Dogs, Essendon etc. If all our players are available and everyone else's are too. We have very few injuries comparatively and on this years form we should expect finals. There are sides below us with better lists.

Lists don't always relate to performance. Essendon with a full list should be a top 6 side. They under perform for a variety of reasons. Hawks on pure list aren't a bad side, the fatigue of being up for years, the loss of momentum and the realisation that they are back in development has seen them drop away.

To me the momentum of a new coach and players will start to wear off next year and we need to make finals to keep the positivity and energy up. It would make a massive difference to our finances as well.

To get as close to finals as we have and not play in them now should be seen internally as unacceptable. A bit of luck helped to get us here playing sides at the right time etc but we now just need to make the most of every opportunity.

Results are helping us to get another real sniff, if they don't make the most of it I think we should be very disappointed. It's a fork in the road moment for the club. If we get close and don't move forward it's more of what's held us back for 8 years. If we step up we can make up for a lot of past mistakes. It's up to the players now.

Fair enough mate. Your thoughts confuse me a lot as you don't rate our list yet at the same time say we should be playing finals.

I must be a lot more glass half full than you. How many sides fighting for a spot in the 8 have over half their side with less than 70 games?

The answer is none.

I don't think it's too much to expect that we will improve as those guys get more games into them.

If the sides below us have better list than that suggests we are over achieving.

Our list is building and a lot of the quality is all young. I think we probably have one A grade talent and a pretty even B grade bulk of our list. It doesn't matter what the list looks like though as I said. We have had most of our players stand up injury wise, met sides while they were down etc and the quick fire games probably suit youth more than older sides.

Anyway to get your foot in the door and fall at the last hurdle would be a waste. You never bank on future improvement with other sides coming on too and you have to take your chance. I think it will be a fail if they don't play finals.

Does GWS have a better list? I think the Dogs probably do, Essendon yes others are around our level.

Most clubs just below us have had decent runs with injuries just like us except for Essendon so that's no excuse as to how well we have gone.

We had our foot in the door because we were in the 8, but did you have a look at the teams we played on the way home.

Your thoughts are clearly that we have a worse lust than Geelong, Brisbane and Melbourne but your upset because we lost to them and now are a chance to miss the 8?

Just seems like you are full of contradictions.

Are we a better list than GWS? Dogs? Melbourne? Essendon? I'd say we around the level of those sides but worse over all due to the lack of star players. I suggested a couple years ago that Brisbane were building a better list and they jumped us, same as the Pies. I would say the GC have a better list long term but age is holding them back. Dogs the same, they are developing a good list that looks finals bound.

We are improved but won't start threatening serious finals sides until we start to get in top end talent or some of ours step up. Port is top of the ladder and I'd say they are nowhere near the best list. Even Richmond aren't technically an outstanding group of players but systems are elite. GWS should have them easily covered.

I'm not upset to lose to the good teams, more pissed off about Freo and North. We let both slip away. It's not contradiction it's logic.

And we haven’t lost to a team in that way since. So a good learning opportunity for a young team which will hopefully hold us in good stead when we get into similar situations again.

Yep we were all pissed off about the losses to Freo and Kangaroos in the first 6 weeks. Not hiding away from that. We did manage to beat the top side at their home ground after being their 5 days prior too though.

I think our list quality is very similar to the likes of the Dogs and Melbourne, which is why I'd be happy to make the 8 in front of them.

And the post you originally quoted of mine was saying we shouldn't be getting ahead of ourselves and worrying about winning a final. I think we should be happy if we get there.

Giants list I rate as good as anyone so no we are not at that level.

The contradiction doesn't come from you now saying we shouldn't have lost to Freo and North, it's that you said we had a worse list than Melbourne and Essendon and similar to Hawthorn but still think we should be expected to make finals.

Won't bother going around with circles any more so I'll leave it there.

So basically you agree that we aren't better than some sides below us. So you are contradicting yourself too. I think Hawks list on paper still looks okay. They obviously aren't getting as much out of the side and they are going to get worse as the list gets older as well. I still think Melbourne and Essendon are slightly better lists. Melbourne have several top 20 players and a pretty good age profile and can't get wins. Must be coaching. Essendon has had injuries and a shit coach to get some excuse. Daniher fit would have made a huge difference.

How am I contradicting myself?

I think we have similar lists to Dogs and Melbourne so if we do make finals it is a good effort. Don't see the contradiction there at all?

So basically, you think if we don't make finals that it's still a good season. I think we need to make finals to make it a good season. That was a lot of back and forwards for not much effect.

Yeah I don't think missing or making finals by percentage or one game will be the difference between a good or bad season.

Pretty simple from here.

We need to win on Sunday, and then hope Melbourne, Bulldogs, Essendon each lose one more game. That will then mean they can only tie us on W/L and our better percentage may be all we need to stay inside the eight. Melbourne our biggest threat with the difference only being 6%.

If we win two more however, those three sides can only tie us on W/L but can only do that if they win the rest of their games. If that happens then again it will come down to percentage.

Collingwood is also the other side who could potentially drop out, whilst it's probably unlikely, their position isn't certain either.

So for every sides next games we need the following;

Friday 04/09
Brisbane v Collingwood

Sunday 06/09
St.Kilda v Hawthorn
Geelong v Essendon
Western Bulldogs v West Coast

Monday 07/09
Melbourne v Fremantle

After that we can reassess (every side will have two games left).

Given our % is very healthy im guessing if dons lose tonight which they look like doing so far (25 v 2 vs the cats). WB lose to WCE playing as strong as a side they can. Melbourne lose to freo off a small break.

Then it means we should make finals at they very least.

If we can pinch either the WCE or GWS game then we should have a "home" final

Yeah, if Essendon lose today (currently down 31-2) then they are eliminated from finals. Or at least, they won't catch us (highest they can finish is 34pts, we are on 36).

If the Eagles beat the Bulldogs tonight and the Dockers beat the Demons then that means that both the Dogs and Dees can only tie us on points, meaning it will come down to percentage.

Safe to say if WCE and Fremantle win, and we don't get smashed in our last two games, we will make it.
