This extraordinary comment was inserted by Bluey into one of my posts on a topic that was originally about asylum seekers at Woomera. It arose out of an exchange between myself and someone who calls himself/herself "Darky".

Civility is not something you owe to others, it is something you owe to yourself. At times, Alf, you act like an arrogant 'lefty intellectual', which gives no-one any reason to respect you. You did your thesis on FOOTBALL for God's sake. Hardly Nobel Prize-winning material there mate.

Taking it one point at a time:

Civility is not something you owe to others, it is something you owe to yourself.
Sounds very profound and I won't argue with it ... but if this is the case, then my lack of civility is MY problem, not yours.

ARROGANT ... well, arrogance seems to be part of the currency of football and indeed BigFooty. There are entire football clubs that define themselves by their arrogance (e.g. Carlton, Port Adelaide). THEY consider arrogance a good quality.
I don't quite go along with that, but in any case I think arrogance is more about the way people are perceived by others than anything they do or say. An arrogant person is one who is perceived by others to have an overbearing presumptuousness ... an assumed superiority.
I would (most humbly) venture to suggest that I'm no Robinson Crusoe in this regard. And I would also (most humbly) suggest that every person I've ever engaged in a sledging match with on this site has incurred my wrath because of that very same quality of overbearing presumptuousness. This whole site is absolutely crawling with pots who are constantly calling the kettle black. Why single me out?

INTELLECTUAL ... believe it or not, there are some societies that actually regard intellect as a good thing. Not this one, obviously. Look, I spent a lot of years in school. When the rest of you were making money, I was accumulating degrees, diplomas and doctorates. Hey, it kept me off the streets.

I never suggested that it does. When I mentioned the notion of "respect" I was referring to my respect for others ... and that I would not be civil to anyone I don't respect.

They didn't give me the Nobel Friggin' Prize ... mate. They gave me a Ph.D.
Obviously you haven't read the damn thing. (I don't blame you. Who'd want to read a bloody academic thesis anyway). Because if you had read it, you'd know that it wasn't about "football" as such. It was more to do with the way the public relates to it ... and the ongoing rape of football culture by the corporate sector. Obviously NOT aimed at winning a Nobel Prize. But every bit as valid a topic for study as any other thesis topic. If you don't agree maybe you should make a complaint to Monash University and try to convince them to retract my qualification.
So ... what IS a valid topic for historical study, in your opinion?
The American Civil War?
World War 2?
The French Revolution?
These things affected peoples live profoundly .... and SO DOES FOOTBALL.
So, please ... do your own intelligence a bit of justice and pull your bloody head in.

I'd say convention, not perception.

Polite, indifferent, rude, empathetic, arrogant, etc. All terms of appraisal, and naturally we can be perceived as any or all of these at times. But perceptions relate to some qualitative element that is based on social convention. We are in a print medium, so the conventions to which you are being held to account are linguistic.

What is it stylistically about Doc's discourse that fits into our paradigm of arrogance? Is it the use of words such as paradigm??

It is because he lives in a country such as Australia, the same can be said for those who live in America, or England or other like minded societies.

Let Alf, or anyone else, live in Afghanistan, or Iran, or Iraq, or Syria, or Libya, or China, or Cuba, or Somalia, or Tibet, or other such locales, let Alf have the opportunity of free speech, let him speak his mind in a public forum in those countries, and guess what would happen?

Yes, you probably guessed right, Alf, or whoever it may be, would be "disappeared", yep, incarceration without trial, without representation, without sentencing.

Open ended imprisionment, at the mercy of the whim of the state, and even of your jailors.

Hey Stegelator, I'd already had a chip at Alf before Bluey got involved. The thing is, Bluey and a few others think that Alf was way over the top towards Darky in particular. Why the hell would you see that agreeing with Bluey is sucking up? What possible benefit could be gained from sucking up to Bluey? Alf and everyone else on this board are entitled to give their opinions. What's not OK is for outragous claims to be made about other posters without some evidence. You would probably find that the people that are agreeing with Bluey had a different opinion to Alf in the original thread, so therefore they have every right to agree with Bluey without being called "s.u.c.k.h.o.l.e.s".

Do you all avoid sensible discussion when someone takes a contrary position to yourselves?

It merely happens by chance that some of their views are diametrically opposed to some of mine, so on those issues it is natural that we would clash heads.

They, as am I, are hard heads, unlikely to back down from a position. I happen to trust my position is correct, and I will argue that, as they will theirs.

There is no need for malice, I have met Joffa and QT, and am only to happy to share beers, (coke in QT's case) with them, they are nice people, it does not mean that I cannot have a disagreement with them

Now Alf is a different character, I have never come across anyone with views so opposed to my own, but I would still have a beer with the older than me bastard.

Fair enough, I'll take your word for it. I'm fairly new here and probably been a bit quick to judge Joffa and Steggy. Sorry about that guys. I got a bit annoyed at being called a suck because that was not what I was doing. I totally agree that there should not be any malice, geez that's why I had a chip at Alf in the first instance. As far as Alf is concerned, I really enjoy reading his posts. I've even gone back and read a lot of his old stuff. I also agree with a lot of what he says and admire his guts to post such controversial views. I just can't get past how one so intelligient feels the need to abuse people the way he does. He could slay most of the people on this board just using his intelligience.
