Those could be Min Min lights?
You're right of course. For some reason I got the name wrong. Cheers. They were definitely hot air balloons in the end though.
I actually saw what was describes as the Min Min lights near Canberra while out fox shooting very late on a clear winter night.
It was ultra clear and a mate and I were having a break sitting outside his 4wd just looking up at the "backbone of night" (the Milkyway edge on resembles a back bone.) which shines brilliantly on cloudless winter nights.
Two lights, very small, but distinct, slightly larger than your average stars, moved in unison, horizontally at first across our field of view and then upward before separating, doing a bit of a jiggle around and then just zooming off into the night.
We both just looked at each other and said "That was cool."
Later someone told me these were called Min Min lights.
