Its a step in the right direction, but obviously it would be so much better for our players development to be in the vfl - but not to be. That said an eastern seaboard competition is positive step in growing the game in non traditional afl areas as well as further developing our players - lets hope it happens.

I would think conference due to the travel and cost factor with games in 2 states and territories.

If that means we play our bulk of games against ACT or NSW teams we have gained nothing and if a lot of games are played against in Sydney based teams we in fact lose.

If we play a against QLD based teams in the main season as well than we gain.

I think I read somewhere it will be a mix. We'll play two games against each NSW/ACT conference team, and one game against every QLD/NT conference team, or something along those lines. So we will play the northern teams during the main season, but we won't play them as much as the southern teams.

Can anybody confirm? I can't find the article, and I'm not sure if I'm remembering it right.

They still haven't worked it out yet, but GWS will not be going into the VFL like the Suns did. No need for an article Cas as the reporters know as much as us. At least we will be playing 3 other AFL teams reserves which has to be an improvement on what we have now.

From the 'Northern Territory News' (3 October 2010)

"The exact format is still under negotiation but as the Northern Territory News reported in March, the most likely scenario is two separate conferences, one northern and one southern, with scheduled cross-over matches during the 20-week season. .... The northern conference stays as the QAFL but adds the Gold Coast Suns reserves, and the southern combines Sydney Swans reserves and Greater Western Sydney, plus teams from AFL NSW and ACT state leagues."

From today's Age:
'Folau on hard road to AFL' found at http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/folau-on-hard-road

"Holmes said it was unlikely GWS would play in the VFL next season, as the Suns had done this year. The AFL is still working on plans for a new northern league that could feature teams from NSW and Queensland. "

It says
The GWS reserves team will play in the peak Canberra competition.
. I'm assuming that means from 2012 onwards. The rumours are very strong about this Northern League (basically still the QAFL and AFL Canberra leagues but with some crossover games) but as time passes by and no official announcement is made, I get more sceptical.

Can someone explain what rules were put into the ACT league to stop the swans from winning every game by nearly 200 points a few years ago?

There was a limit placed on the number of players we could play, I think it was 12 from memory and the rest of the team is made up from randoms.

Just saw this on twitter. www.twitter.com/AFL_AdamMcNicol

* AFL's new northern comp will be known as the North East Australian Football League. Basically puts the QAFL and AFL Canberra together.
* Gold Coast and Lions reserves will play in Northern Conference of NEAFL. Swans reserves and GWS will play in Eastern Conference.

2 conferences with cross over games for AFL reserves teams

4 Canberra teams plus QAFL plus NT plus 2 Sydney

the preference was rep type teams from Sydney but they may have changed that concept

Only the reserves teams would need to do interstate travel hence the need for 12 teams

If u read the link there are no Sydney teams and the Canberra clubs and qafl clubs also host crossover games, just not against the other states reserves teams

Interim solution for 2011 but not sustainable over time. There will be Sydney teams in 2012 but just too hard for now. Note there are only 7 teams which is at least 1 short of a good comp.
