How good is Lamb's fitness, Grim? Could he play out half a game as an outside mid, or would he limited to the forward line?
I haven't noticed any issues with Lamb's fitness in the 3 practice games. I noted that he was involved in one centre square set up against GWS but he was playing forward for the rest of the games.

If he comes into the seniors I think his brief will be to stay deep in the forward line and chase and pressure hard when he doesn't have the ball. He looks like a natural crumber, he knows when he has to stay down and where the ball is likely to end up when it hits the deck. He's also very elusive and evasive when he's one out with his opponent, so the coaches will endeavour to give him a lot of space to work with.

Here's a shot of Pyke owning Folau. He got the HTB free kick and nailed the set shot.

Plenty of photos of Alex Johnson in that set. Perhaps you noticed something that the rest of us didn't ;)?

NEAFL (Eastern Conference) Round 2
Eastlake Demons v Sydney Swans Reserves
Sunday 10th April 2010 12.30pm
Ainslie Oval

A new competition against familiar foes. Note there is no typo in the heading, we really do begin the season in Round 2! (Round 1 started for the Northern Conference only with all Eastern Conference teams receiving a bye).

Eastlake were the team responsible for ending the Reserves' season early in 2010, knocking them out in the preliminary final by the tune of 21 points. The Demons will be one of the stronger sides in the Eastern Conference, having managed to hold on to their core squad and in addition have strengthened their side by bringing in 2 SANFL players, onballer Aaron Wiles from Port Adelaide and tall Mitch Frail from Central Districts. Diehard reserve fans may recall that Frail played for the reserves as a topup player in 2008.

2010
R4 Reserves 18.10 (118) defeated Eastlake 17.9 (111) @ SCG
In an entertaining and competitive match, the Reserves managed to hold on against a fash-finishing Demons outfit. Top-up player Kieran Emery and Matthew O'Dwyer both booted 3 majors while Mike Pyke, Gary Rohan and Dylan McNeil were the standouts.

R9 Eastlake 8.13 (61) defeated by Reserves 14.12 (96) @ Manuka
The Reserves completed their 5th straight away game with a comfortable victory over the Demons. Kristin Thornton and forwards Lewis Johnston (5 goals) & Trent Dennis-Lane (4 goals) were the Swans best players.

R14 Reserves 21.15 (141) defeated Eastlake 15.12 (102) @ SCG
A slow start to the game saw the Reserves trailing at quarter time, but once they clicked into gear, they were never really threatened by Eastlake on the scoreboard. Lewis Johnston starred with 5 goals at CHF, ably assisted by Pat Veszpremi and Trent Dennis-Lane's 4 goal hauls. Exciting South Australian Byron Sumner earnt his first BOG nomination, with sole ruckman Daniel Currie and Johnston also earning plaudits.

Prelim Final Eastlake 13.11 (89) defeated Reserves 10.8 (68) @ Manuka
The Reserves started the final well, holding a 19 point lead at half time but lost the advantage through a dismal 2nd quarter. The Demons managed to hang on to their lead for the rest of the game to progress through to the grand final. Topup player Kieran Emery and Dylan McNeil kicked 2 goals with Daniel Currie, Sam Reid and Kristin Thornton the best Swans in a losing effort.

Last Round
Reserves 23.16 (154) defeated GWS 8.10 (58)
A poor first quarter where they wasted a few chances and allowed GWS some easy goals was quickly forgotten as they stepped up another gear or two and demolished their western rivals with a clinical display. Jed Lamb led the way with 6 goals, while big men Mike Pyke and Mark Seaby rotated well through the ruck and full forward. Young Alex Johnson had an impressive game in defence.

Changes (from practice match against GWS)
In: Meredith (dropped) Dennis-Lane (ankle) Parker (non-playing senior emergency) Moore (ankle)
Out: Alex Johnson (senior promotion) Mike Pyke (travelling senior emergency)

The promotions of Johnson and Pyke and the non-appearance of LRT robs this side of some height, especially in defence. Johnston will continue to hold down a key defensive post with Otten and McKaigue most likely to play in the other key defensive role. Kennelly and Sumner should round out the defensive set up.

In the midfield, Parker and Meredith return to add some inside muscle alongside McNeil which was a little lacking in the GWS game. This will allow Kruger to return to a more outside running role. Moore usually finds himself in the midfield when he turns out for the ressies, and with match fitness a concern, he'll probably get a run there albeit under restricted minutes.

Up forward, the new boys Haren and Lamb have been impressive, being the 2 leading goalkickers across the 3 practice matches. They'll get a boost from TDL's return from his ankle injury. My mouth waters at the thought Lamb and TDL working in tandem, those 2 have a few party tricks up their respective sleeves. Throw in the resting ruckman in Currie/Seaby and there are plenty of goals to be had in this side.

Overall I like the balance of this side, perhaps just missing another tall down back. Because the makeup of the reserves side is heavily dependent on the seniors, sometimes the team ends up with a lopsided squad of either too many smalls or too many talls - like the time in 2007 where we had 5 ruckmen all playing in the same team. However, this is not the case for Sunday's game where there is a good spread of different kinds of players throughout the squad.

Academy Players/Topups

  • 30. Mitch MAY [0]
  • 47. Jackson POTTER [0]
  • 48. Blake GUTHRIE [0]
  • 50. James BRAIN [0]
  • 51. Jack LYNCH [0]
  • 53. Kane MURPHY [0]
  • 54. Tim WALES [0]
  • 57. Teddy STRUDWICK [0]
In: May, Strudwick
Out: Daniel Robinson, Nathan Kenny

May seemed to play more in the Canberra based games last year as a topup. Strudwick's first appearance this year although I recall he has played against us as part of the Sydney AFL development side.

Talking points
The talking points mostly surround the return of the injured senior players

  • Dennis-Lane - A quicker than anticipated return from the ankle injury he suffered in training. He did undergo a full pre-season so his minutes might not be as heavily managed as the two below.
  • Kennelly - Played 70 minutes last week, 10 more than expected, and with another solid hitout here, will probably be close to returning against Geelong. It will be interesting to see how the club handle his workload with the upcoming bye in Round 5.
  • Moore - Hasn't played any football since rolling his ankle in Coffs against the Saints and will be limited in the number of minutes he'll play. I'd expect a few weeks in the reserves before he even comes under consideration for the seniors.
Summary
The Reserves had a mixed record on the road last year, scoring impressive wins over the strong clubs Belconnen and Eastlake but also suffering a thrashing at the hands of bottom side Tuggeranong. Coach Playfair will be no stranger to the conditions in the nation's capital, having played in a fair few Canberra games during his Swans career.

The Demons are a strong and well-drilled team with good, young developing players having recently supplied 6 players to the ACT representative side. Look out for the likes of Aaron Bruce, Chad Gibson and John Van Meurs. They should provide the Reserves with their sternest test to date this season.

Thanks grim I'm looking forward to this one, hopefully see Kennelly back to his best and Johnston start pushing for selection.

I'm tipping Lamb for 5 goals and Parker 43 disposals.

Anyone grab the news GWS beat Ainslie quite comfortably yesterday.

Somewhat of an upset I would have thought.
Big upset. Huge upset.

Swans down by 8 midway through the first quarter.

QT, Eastlake 2.4.16, Swans 0.2.2. Both teams struggling to get it inside 50, but Eastlake have taken their chances better. Sloppy game in damp conditions.

Kennelly has been quiet, as has Moore. Sumner has done some nice things but a bit anonymous otherwise. LJ reasonable in defence. Not much clean ball out of the centre; Seaby, Currie, McNeil, Parker and Mez need to lift. Some senior players being outshone by toppies, with Brain, Murphy and Potter doing well.

Yes considering how many seniors are playing im not happy with the result thanks for the update

HT, Eastlake 3.7.25, Swans 5.4.34. Much improved quarter, we were able to get it inside 50 much more, and we took our chances. Sumner, Parker, McNeil, TDL all lifted, as did Kane Murphy, who I'd probably have as BOG. VERY busy across half forward and the midfield. Could be a genuine player if we rookie him.

Guthrie also lifted, Potter faded into the background a bit, Lamb has been quiet, Haren likewise, I don't like Otten, LJ is solid, Gordon is meh, Lynch is ok in defence, I like Brain, Kennelly, Meredith and Moore all underwhelming, Currie OK.

Injury wise, Lamb dislocated a finger but is ok, Sumner copped a knock to the leg but jogged it off, and Murphy got crunched but is fine.

3QT, Eastlake 4.7.31, Swans 9.8.62. Another dominant quarter. TDL is getting involved, Johnston really stepped up in defence, McNeil good, Guthrie, Brain and Murphy very good, Moore better. Seaby has been disappointing.
One on hand it's good to hear the topups are playing well but it's disappointing when you realise it means that some of the listed players aren't doing what is expected of them.

Cold day, but a pretty good game of footy to watch. Nobody really stood out and demanded senior selection unfortunately, not even Moore or Kennelly, but it was entertaining.

Seaby: Good with the hitouts as you'd expect, but didn't do much around the ground. You'd really expect him to dominate at this level, but he didn't. Serviceable, one of our better players even, but pretty disappointing given his experience and ability.
Meredith: Like Seaby, solid contribution, but really should be dominating at this level. His skills always stand out, but he just wasn't involved enough. I am getting quite concerned he'll never make it.
TDL: Pretty good return. Limited time on ground, but kicked a few goals (3 I think), and moved up the ground well. Didn't demand selection, but if he backs it up next week with a similar performance for a bit more TOG, he should come into consideration.
Currie: Looked more confident than he did earlier in the year, but still isn't dominating. He just hasn't developed physically. Took some nice grabs, kicked a goal, was perfectly serviceable, but once again showed nothing to suggest he'll make it an senior level, unfortunately.
Lamb: Really struggled to impose himself. Started forward quite anonymously, before moving into the midfield half way through the second quarter, where he seemed to spend the rest of the game. Had some nice touches, and tackled and contested quite aggressively which was good to see, but still pretty disappointing.
Kennelly: Got to be honest, I thought he was rubbish. Fumbled and bumbled around, not much run, didn't use the ball well, and was fairly ordinary defensively. Of course, I'm marking him harshly because of his experience, but I really expected better from him. Wouldn't have him in next week on that performance, to be honest.
Sumner: Drifted in and out of the game a bit, but had some really nice moments. Played everywhere, spending time in defence, on the wing and in the forwardline. Dropped an Eastlake player who tried to rough him up, which was HILARIOUS (all the more so because of the reaction from Eastlake fans). This guy was trying to get the shoulder into him off the ball and after a couple of times Sumner just pushed him away with his hands. Eastlake player fell like a bag of bricks. Anyway, back to his performance, sometimes he isn't smart enough, takes on too much, but this is hopefully something he'll improve upon. Still like him a lot, but didn't demand selection.
Johnston: Spent the entire game at CHB. First half he got outbodied a couple of times and wasn't that involved, but really stepped up in the second half, cutting off numerous Eastlake attacks, reading the play really well, getting front position, taking marks, spoiling, etc. Showed glimpses of being a really good CHB in the future, if he's persevered with there.
Parker: Not as dominant as he has been in other games, and was especially quiet in the first quarter, but came into it and had some really good touches in close. I like him.
McNeil: Like Parker, quiet in the first quarter, but really came into it from then on. Had heaps of clearances. Probably BOG in the end.
Moore: Like Kennelly, disappointing. Didn't find a whole lot of ball, and his ball use was up and down. That said, he was very vocal and involved from that perspective, as you'd expect. Didn't demand selection.
McKaigue: A bit anonymous, though solid in defence, and he had a couple of good runs. He really seems to have hit a plateau though. If I had to put my house on it, I'd say he won't make it.
Kruger: I'm a fan, but he was completely anonymous today. Did very little. Won't be happy with that game, given his form in previous weeks has been very promising.
Otten: I'm not a fan, to be honest. He's OK, but he's not involved nor skilled enough to be a rebounder, not defensive enough to be a small defender, not big enough to be a key defender. Took a good grab that I remember, but other than that did very little.
Gordon: Always puts in a 100% effort, but he's just not skilled nor smart enough I don't think. He's a step above NEAFL, but I just can't see him making it at AFL level.
Haren: A bit quiet, didn't really take many big grabs like we know he can, but he's a surprisingly skilled player. Snapped a really good goal at one stage which was very convincing. Lacks a bit in athleticism, but has all the skills. No guarantee he'll make it, but he'll be very interesting to watch develop.

Toppies/Academy Players:

May: Kept losing his feet, didn't read the play well, couldn't impose himself. Can't see him making it.
Potter: Noticed him early, but seemed to fade as the game went on. Nice looking player, but outshone by other toppies today,
Guthrie: First time I've been really impressed with Guthrie. While he started a little bit slowly, he really came into it from the 2nd quarter onwards. Pretty sure he kicked at least 2 goals, and found plenty of the ball. Looked really classy and comfortable out there, and his skills were good. Could be a player.
Brain: Really like this player. He has impressed me every time I've seen him. He has a real go, he's composed, he's clever and he's skilled. Didn't dominate, you wouldn't expect a toppy to, but he definitely contributed.
Lynch: Played as a key defender, and was pretty useful. Didn't like what I saw last year, but has really come on this year. Showed some great agility at ground level a couple of times too. Wouldn't be at all surprised if we rookied him.
Murphy: I want him on our list. One of our best players, arguably second best behind McNeil. Found plenty of the ball, put his body on the line time after time, bobbed up for a few goals, used the ball really well, and also showed some aerial skills which help ease doubts about his height. I've seen him show flashes of this stuff before this game, but this was the first time he really put it all together for a full game, and it was great to watch. He can take a hit too.
Wales: Quiet as a mouse. Has been very useful as a toppy previously, but did nothing today.
Strudwick: Did nothing in the first half, but worked his way into it in the second half, playing in defence. Spent a LOT of time on the bench, I'd be surprised if he got more than 33% TOG, but had some nice touches.
