I may use one more, but I couldn't take the piss with it.

That's not me.
We've been sucked into thinking taking time off for being unwell or caring for unwell family members is taking the piss.

My boss doesn't make us log our sick leave or provide a certificate. When we're sick, we're sick. We're a small team and nobody takes advantage. It's nice not to be treated like a crook when you need a sick day.

I've way underutilized my sick leave, I should check how many days I've taken in the past 10 years
In the nearly four years I've worked there, I think I've taken around 25 days.

5 was appendicitis, 3.5 for a bung foot, and others for tonsillitis, colds etc. Maybe 3-4 were just cbf.

That's very good. Small company?

Yeah - about 15 people all up.

He figures we don't get paid out sick leave when we leave, and none of us take advantage, so why bother. It's a nice gesture. After taking 2 weeks off for an operation and maybe one or two for viruses, I'd be pretty low on accrued sick leave, but nobody's keeping score. We work late, early, occasional weekends, and therefore if we need to leave early or have a day off, it's given, no questions asked.

So, those of you who have resigned, how'd you do it?

It's pretty easy really....I've told at least a half a dozen bosses of old employers to shove their job where the sun don't shine....I'm always interested in their reactions too.

One was especially heated & fiery with home truths by the dozen being screamed at each other across his desk.....I enjoyed that one the most.

The way it should be. Think it will gradually move from 'sick leave' to 'personal leave' where your privacy is somewhat respected when you call in absent for the day.

I have a stack of sick leave up my sleeve, it's there to be used and I should use it but my logic with sick leave is to save it for something/anything that might see me out of action for more than a week. It's really stacked up in the event of breaking an arm or a leg, thus I'd be safe for 2+ months :D..
If you are still playing sport this is a good strategy

I think it’ll gradually move from ‘full time work with sick leave and holidays’ to ‘casualised work force.’

Nah actually it’s already doing that.

Yeah was going to add an * saying that I've never actually had a job that wasn't casual, I'm 23 and have had about 4 jobs.

We can take upto 2 consecutive days off without a medical certificate, but need one for anything beyond that. I like that system and it isn't abused.
I had to take a fair chunk of sick leave last year so have been pegged back to the /2 weeks left for a rainy day , situation.

Apparently you are not required to give an actual reason- sure a medical cert (for my work its 3 days+ in a row, before or after a public holiday, or if you're over 5 single days off without a cert)- but actually saying "im sick" you dont have to do.

Yeah, I plan on leaving on good terms. I want it to be as amicable as possible. My relationship with my manager is strong. But as I've said, it will be a complete shock and it's really going to make it hard on her given how much crap is going on at the moment. Though, evidently, that's not my issue.

I will be as honest as I can. I'll say I've been offered another job, I wasn't looking, and I've accepted it because it's too good to turn down.

She'll be shocked and I honestly don't know how she'll take it. I think a combination of shock/disappoint/sad/happy (for me).
**** you rate yourself

...
I figure if I can still move around and be productive there's no need to call in sick, for example why would I take the day off for a sore throat ?
...

If I'm your boss and your turn up to work crook - I'm sending you home. I don't want you giving it to me (or others, but mostly me).:p

Policy I've had for many years when I've been unfortunate enough to find myself having to "manage" people.

Without a boss in Australia, my sick day process is weird.

I email when I am sick, and that's it.

No questions, nothing. I could really abuse the system, yet since this has happened (12 Months), i have taken 0 sick days and just work from home if i had a cold etc.

So in hindsight, having nobody to worry about actually makes me work harder :(

I was going to be less harsh than this, but yeah pretty much everyone is more replaceable than they think they are.

Good work on getting the new job, but you'll be forgotten about within a month of leaving the current one.

Oh absolutely. I know I am replaceable.

If we can replace 7 Prime Ministers in 12 years, they'll have no problem replacing me.

However, some people are harder to replace than others because of their knowledge, work ethic, reliability etc.

Her primary emotion will be annoyance at having to go through the process of finding someone.

Once I have signed the contract I will resign - hopefully tomorrow. My notice period is 4 weeks, though as mentioned I am not sure if I'll get walked or not. I doubt I will, they're not really in a position to either given how busy we are at the moment.

I like the idea of deciding if you break it to your team or not. Though there are only four of us currently, only two don't know, and I'll tell him myself, and the other one I don't really care about so I guess it's not that relevant after all.

I want to maintain the relationships I've made and leave on good terms.

I'll definitely leave on good terms. Couldn't do it in a bad way.
I was taking the piss bra

I had a long term staff member in his mid fifties who would often use a sick day on a Friday or Monday, or sometimes both in the same week, and it was fairly obvious that he was taking the piss. He always provided a certificate though so we couldn't do anything about it. He did it at least once every 8 weeks or so. He ended up getting very unwell and was hospitalised for a few months and no sick leave accrued.

My cuz said he was going to the toilet and never went back srs.

lol this is basically how I left a couple casual jobs in my late teens/early 20's.

told them I was going on lunch and never came back. Another one I just stopped showing up/ignored phone calls.
