I have some short videos that I recorded on my digital camera that I'd like to be able to email to friends/family but it records in AVI and even just a 2 minute video is around 80MB. I'm looking for a free program I can use to take it down to about 10MB if possible.

Funny.
I had a very similar problem to you which I solved last night.

I used a free program called VirtualDub which seems to be the most popular on the net out of all the freeware.

Go to file > open video file and then choose the AVI you want to compress.
Then go to video > compression and choose a codec (like DivX).
Then you can fiddle around with the data rate to get your desired quality/file size.

There may be a better way out there but this is the path the internet folk led me down and it was quite quick and easy.

AutoGk is pretty awesome, free, but takes a bit to get the hang of.
It can crush 4.5 GB of .vob to 700mb with very little loss. This comes at a time cost though. 4.5GB to 700mb takes 3 hours or so, but is worth the wait.
80mb to 10 should be a damned sight quicker though.

Yep, AutoGK is great for DVD ripping. XMedia Recode is good for converting/resizing too.
