But it would give new people like myself.
A chance to actually make their own team.

You gotta be patient

Im in my 3rd year of competition, and I started with a woeful list, made finals last year (but went out in straight sets, had the lowest points for in the 8 but ended 5th or 6th), doubt Ill make finals this year, but Im building

I did go for a 'quickfix' last year, drafting a heap of lesser lights who although wouldnt score heaps, would at least play for their club, therefore giving me 18 players most weeks. But I think now its time for me to build a squad of youngsters around these established players... but when I joined I fully expected it would take 3-4 years to become any good and challenge for a flag, thats why I like this style of game

If theres any change, it would be that only 2 teams were cut, Id rather none, but 2 at most... and no other change

Well I'm yet to play a week with less than 18 in the 7 or so weeks I've been in this.

I agree with most. If any changes, it should be one or two less teams.

I've had about 10 spare players all season.

If you don't have enough players playing each week, you're either shit, or you've inherited shit. Less teams just makes the depth aspect of the game less of a challenge.

Also worth noting I inherited last years spooner which didn't win a game. Although Ive had a very decent run with injuries. The nature of the contract/bidding system means a quick turnaround is very much possible.

Well, on evidence from this season, I've been one of the worst four teams, but I don't think that reflects my list. I've had a horrid run with injuries, and have only just begun 'rebuilding' my list after the salary cap issues that came about (to everyone) last season.

With that all said, the last thing I want to do is restart all over again. I think that, for the most part, we've got a reasonably committed bunch. Just need to sort out the minor 3-4 teams that aren't pulling their weight. But in doing that, I don't see why the rest of the comp needs to be affected (i.e. a comp-wide re-draft).

I would retain the 12 best teams/coaches, sack the worst 4, then put those 4 teams into a draft pool and the 4 new (targetted) coaches can draft their own squad that is completely theirs. Perhaps we can give them some extra draft picks with perhaps a stipulation they must be traded to give them some more leverage to recruit some players from the rest of the comp.

I think a 16 team comp should probably remain. The quality of lists should reflect that of the AFL, if you reduce the team every team becomes stronger and the aspect of the game of recruiting smokeys and being able to spot the not so obvious talent would be lessened with these players just ending up on a free agents list.

Exactly. Maybe these 4 new coaches get first crack at the bidding too?

One change I would like to suggest is with the ladder..and to have a for and against column with a % column like they do in AFL.
We did that when we started but somebody argued that it didn't make sense to have the against column, which coaches have no control over, determining the ladder.

Scoring changes could beneficial and could fix the positional problems we have. eg. Full backs can somehow become worth a spot in your 18.
But what can you do to help full backs that doesn't help midfielders? Until we get a separate spoils stat regularly available, we've only really got 1%ers. Since Geelong's midfield is built on 1%ers and everyone else will try to match them, unless we just give a big bonus for getting 8 which will rarely be done by anyone but a guy playing on one of the opposition's best forwards.

How bout if the premier gets a free year of Bigfooty supporter?
I doubt I'd be able to get that. I'll see what I can get next time Chief's cleaning out the prize cupboard

I think we should add a history board. Players could strive to get their name on this board as a premier. Gives more of a reason to play the game. Also could have a leaderboard of top five scores ever. Another reason to play to win.
Doable

have their own team board stickied or something. It would be good to click onto the page and see the rules and signup threads followed by all the team threads.
If VB had different sticky levels I'd do that, but doing that generally only leaves the selection threads unstickied. I will see what I can do about cutting down the number of stickies we have.

Maybe the comp needs to be advertised more. I was on bigfooty for months before I even realised there was a comp. It'd be good to actually have a waiting list.
Did the move up to Footy Games help with that?

Also I think we need more banter between coaches. Maybe if you (Russian) could copy the teams into a word document when you want to lock the teams and just say 'Teams now Locked'. Then, coaches could communicate during gametime commenting on how their players went and that they are going to beat the other team comfortably (But not in those words;)).
I can see edit histories so I guess I don't need to lock them. I might bring in a lesser penalty for a team posted after Friday's bounce but before Saturday's.

Also, why can't we post images on this board?
Inherited permissions from the Games board I guess. I'll ask JB to change it

Yeah i rekon we need to promote it a bit more. Particulary this year with the DT & SC forums and people posting there, i rekon this game would definately appeal to them.

This game is run so well and the system is great :thumbsu: , if more people were aware of it, how to ask for a spot in it, and knew that it wasn't just one of those trade/draft games that come nov/dec it dies, then they'd come i rekon.
Recruitment is an area I'd really like other coaches to take on. If a current coach comes to me with a recommendation I generally bend the rules to get them in quicker - although that hasn't always been successful either.

Yep. The full backs are the depth in most teams in case of injuries, maybe we need to have a rule where each team needs at least one Full Back.
And what defines a full back?

Maybe we get extra cap space for press releases etc? This would keep the bottom teams interested because at the end of the year, if they can earn more $$$ during the season they can poach players better through the Bidding Period, thus improving their team.
Interesting

Maybe we need to give Russian a hand with it, eg. posting ladder, team lists etc?
I've been doing some work on automating the scoring process. What I may ask coaches to do is post teams in a common format so I can get the computer to read them for me. That means learning to spell all your players' names and putting the full name when naming your team. I guess I could write a program to help you do that too. Is anyone not running Windows XP/Vista?

Maybe with the 4/5 teams we struggle with, we can put those players into a draft pool and select 4/5 coaches who compete in a draft with those players. This means those 4/5 teams are starting over again while the established teams remain.
We did that with FA I think. Can any of the people who were involved in that remember how successful it was?

Agree on that. Leave as is.

Scoring should stay the same IMO.

I doubt I'd be able to get that. I'll see what I can get next time Chief's cleaning out the prize cupboard.

Anything would be good. :)

I'll volunteer to do it myself.

Not a big priority.

Where did it used to be?

Agree with the small penalty. I've changed my mind on the locking of threads though. I don't really care if it's done or not.

Again, not high priority. Just wondering.

Shouldn't be too hard. Good idea.

In regards to the records section, I am more than happy to help out with going back through the history to compile a comprehensive list of records. So if you get anything going loopy, I can help, or if you dont, I can just go for it :thumbsu:

Another thing associated with that is bringing in awards. I run my own Fantasy Footy league from home which has a medals night at the end of the year. Good excuse for a piss up anyway! But this one obviously wouldnt have that piss up... a Brownlow medal format of 3-2-1 to the highest 3 scorers in every game, every week...?

I may go back through this year and run a tally to be counted at this seasons end... obviously votes only count up to Round 15

Sorry guys. Completely forgot to submit my team last week.

Don't think the comp needs a full make-over.
Seems to work fairly well. The most difficult thing is getting and keeping reliable coaches, especially for the weaker teams that need a complete re-build.
Having 2-3 people helping out with weekly scores helps but it looks like Russian is setting up a good system there that should make things much easier for him.

What do you have in mind?

I was just gonna do top scores, biggest winning margins and an archive of the games.

Yeah, depends how in depth you wanna go. Something I would do for sure is highest indivdual scores... maybe season records, winning/losing streaks...it could go on and on

Might be something that I could get into after the season, that lull between AFL and cricket :thumbsu:

Edit* - I did, however, notice that Russian got lazy during the first 2 seasons and didnt always post indivdual scores... with work, and a lot of, I could find those scores... but that would mean I am in an unbelievably keen-to-do-it mood!

I was thinking of doing records for each season and then overall. Also records for just the finals.

I've already started on 2004 for this. Perhaps I could do 04, 05 and you could do 06, 07?

I believe I still have all those scores so if you let me know what rounds you need I can post them at some point

I keep forgetting that this board exists because it's a subforum with a bunch of other subforums bunch together. I like boards that stick out, not boards that I forget about.

People who are interested in playing manage to find it
