Review Review - 2016/17 Drafting and Trading Season

I don't think I have ever been so satisfied come December.

Out : Pav ( retired ) DeBoer Mzungu Hannath Mayne Smith Morabito Silvagni and Barlow

In : Hamling, Kersten, BHill, Logue, Cox, Darcy, Ryan, Duman, Strnadica

We have addressed all our needs in the short term and long term. Added height and outside pace. Kicking skills have recieved a boost too with Ryan, BHill and Logue.

Would have liked another inside mid as Mundy is getting a bit on and there is doubt over Fyfe but cant have everything.

The only dark clouds on the horizon are Yarran, Johnno and Bennell. For some reason I am optomistic on Yarran, cautiously optomistic on Bennell and downright pessimistic on Johhno.

We have gone very very tall this year, will be interesting as to which of Duman or Cox plays forward and which one plays backline.

Solid. Was very happy with the results before hearing that Yarran & Bennell could both potentially be out. Think the teams done well and we've got some good new additions.

It might start to make sense if we look at who's leaving next year.

I'd say: Griffin, Suban, Possibly Sandilands, Ballantyne, Johnson and Dawson, even Clarke.

2 Rucks, (Darcy, Strnadica) 2 KPB, (Logue, Cox, Duman) an average mid and a small forward.

The year after we'd be looking at Danyle and Lee Spurr (Ryan).

In a year where there are good talls, a lot of whom are academy talls, I reckon it might be easier to replace Suban, Spurr and Ballantyne, and possibly add a project ruck

I am really happy with this last month of the AFL, we actually have done really well IMO after a disastrous 2016 on field.

Strnadica is a KPF and not a ruckman.

EDIT: I'm not suggesting he doesn't play in the ruck.

I loved our trading - finally got things done and it set us up well.

So then when I look at our drafting i'm a little underwhelmed. Hopefully the club has a good strategy in place to take so many talls - but some of the picks don't scream out like some of our quality picks of the past. Looking forward to Logue and Cox - not sure about the rest.

But - the club are the experts Happy to see what happens

I see plenty more positives:
You can add McCathy to the ins on your list: Kersten and McCarthy are also great kicks to add to your list of B.Hill, Ryan and Logue.Your other inside mid may yet be Logue in the long term. Plus we have Blakely and Balic already. Strange how so many have had a go at our lack of recruiting talls over the years can't acknowledge we actually recruited a ton this year.

Why are you worried about Johnno?? seems the charge is very minor or is it his fitness? from a playing point of view the team certainly missed him last year and if he is fit there is still a position for him in the team.

I can see us giving a lot of free kicks away for high tackles.

I wonder if they are going tall to cope with gws, and to get an edge over other sides. Seem to have aimed for athletic talls outside of the rucks.

I think it's a clever strategy.

Mixed feelings about the drafting. Think Logue and Cox will be good to very good. Question marks over Ryan and Darcy. Like the Duman pick and with a bit of luck he could turn out one of the best from this crop. Have doubts over Strnadica

I think getting stranadica make sense. Freo already got darcy as ruck for peel . No point getting goddard who is a bit similar to darcy. Just strange that freo dont use pick 3 on rowan who can ruck and play forward and defence. Maybe did not expect st kilda to pick him at 10.

Why do you have question marks on Ryan? Most experts seemed to think he would go in the range of 20 -40. He averaged nearly ten intercepts and kicked the ball at over 86% efficiency last season. Seems like a wonderful pick to me. Slight concerns over his commitment while he was also working full time doesn't seem much of an issue to me. He attacks the ball in the air like Spurr and has the kicking skills of Duffield. How is their a question mark over him? Darcy, yep I agree there are question marks.
