Community support is going to be the key, i've lived in and supported coburg my whole life, my old man even started up a vic kick clinic at coburg city oval 1987 and we played at half time on the home games and I really hope they continue as a stand alone club, but i believe they need a change of name and some serious marketing and cash.
I've been thinking along the lines of calling them the Moreland Tigers (Moreland is the council which covers coburg, brunswick, pascoe vale etc), keeping the colours the ground and history, but try to create a future.
I think by keeping the coburg name it pigeon holes them a bit, there are around 20,000 residents in coburg but around 100,000 residents in the moreland council, brunswick lost there VFA side in the early 90's i think, and i'd hate for the area to lose another side who we can all follow.
Theres plenty of talented footballers in the area just look how strong the Essendon District Football League is and i know for a fact a lot of the blokes playing in the league would love to play an even higher standard if they were given the opportunity.

As a Richmond Supporter, i am very happy tha our club is reverting back to it's own Reserves group.
As an old VFA follower i am disgusted that the footy heirarchy has let football organisation in Victoria fall away so terribly over the past 10 to 20 years.

VFA
Bendigo
Box Hill or Heidelberg
Casey or Frankston
Coburg or Preston or Fitzroy
Melton
Nth Ballarat or other area Golburn, Ovens, Murray.
Port Melbourne
Sandringham or Noble Park
Williamstown
Werribee
possibles, Frankston Neapean, University.

Im thinking westernbulldogs to
Coburg. & willy going it alone. Lets face it dogs can not afford to be stand alone & coburg will struggle to
Be stand alone.

Willy could quite easily go stand alone

well looks like it's mission accomplished for the AFL, it has taken them all of 20 years, but they have finally killed off the VFA. The only hope imho is for the old VFA clubs to break away and reform the old VFA, albeit with a highly reduced salary cap. What is the point of them being in the VFL if almost all AFL clubs are now not aligned?

I'd suggest the new VFA clubs might even have to go amateur for a few years to get their running costs and administration under control before they can consider increasing salaries. Would love to see Fitzroy, and even the old South Melbourne make a comeback to the new league

The only issue is what will Port Melbourne do?

Way too big for every other club.

Did Richmond have the bye when they got 7,000?

Must be all those extra members we have that actually turn up to games Airport west boy.

i think it may be the death of coburg. the vfl just cant generate enough money for standalone clubs with the exception of port melbourne

Not quite true.

Williamstown (going stand alone next year), Frankston and Port Melbourne will survive because they have pokies.

Bendigo will survive because the AFL will be pouring money into the club (as a gateway for under 23s from Northern Victoria).

Coburg... yep... backs to the wall.

This is the way i see it.

Coburg were told they had to play on craigieburn. I dont think they had much say in it.

Now that the alliance is finishing up coburg are playing no games in craigieburn this year (2013)
So all those small amount of true burgers may have been a little peeved the club moved for 3-4 games a year up there.

Now they are heading back. 2000 was tough enough but atleast they had the fitzroy thing going.

The lisence fees have risen im sure since then.

Its going to be tough. Very tough. But all it takes is 1 person to put a few bob in & they will keep afloat but i dont know if they will be able to recruit superstar players

Coburg are still a massive chance of surviving. As soon as their ties with richmond end the better it will be for the club. I for one am a Coburg supporter who lost interest in them as soon as they alligned with Richmond, (why would i want to go watch the Richmond reserves when i don't like Richmond and they have nothing to do with the area.)
Phil Cleary is back down at the club along with his son who will be in he's first year of seniors after playing all his juniors at West Coburg and the wheels are in motion for saving the club. Hopefully they attract the best local talent of the EDFL and the Calder Cannons and really head in the right direction.
The VFL, AFL along with the local community should be doing a hell of a lot more then they are to keep sides like Coburg going, i know i'll do what ever they ask of me as a local to help the mighty burgers stay around for a long, long time.

Phil cleary is honestly the biggest factor here. In 2000 he played a role & got the job done.

He is a peoples personn& one of the most respected persons in vfl circles.

As a mentor/president/ass coach/ marketing im sure he will get somwhere

Surely it can be revamped next year.

How about: AFL Victoria reserves league
Collingwood
Essendon
Carlton
Hawthorn
Geelong
North melbourne
Melbourne
St.kilda
Western bulldogs
Richmond

Play these games at non AFL venues such as vic park, visy park, Arden street, lavington, craigeburn etc

Bring back the legitimate VFL

Port melbourne
Box hill
Springvale
Preston
Coburg
Williamstown
North ballarat
Werribee
Sandringham
Frankston
Bendigo
South melbourne
Fitzroy
Murray bushrangers

Easily solved. Not sure what the issue is. All the interstate teams have their own ressies

Seems like a great idea. It will give a lot of good local blokes a shot at VFL level :).

Sounds easy but where you getting all these players from? 10 AFL side, 10 AFL reserves sides, 14 VFL side + there reserve sides and all the local clubs around, just won't happen.
