RICHMOND great Matthew Richardson says Richard Tambling is ''haunted'' by being drafted ahead of Lance Franklin and has not become the player the Tigers had hoped.
In a bumper 2004 national draft, the indigenous midfielder was taken with the fourth pick - behind teammate Brett Deledio, Hawthorn's Jarryd Roughead and Western Bulldog Ryan Griffen but one spot ahead of Franklin, who has emerged as a Hawthorn superstar.
Tambling's selection has long been a source of consternation among the Tigers faithful.

This is interesting because i remember reading an article at the end of 2008 in which tambling said something along the lines of "Being drafted ahead of buddy does not worry me. I was chosen on the needs of teh Richmond football club at the time, and am grateful for the opportunity they have provided."

He then said something about giving his all to the club to show he was worthy of a number 4 pick.

I cant remember where i read this, but it was online. So for this to be true, three possible conclusions can be drawn.

Either:

Tambling lied in the article i read
Tambling has now changed his attitude over the buddy incident
Or Richo has gotten something wrong when talking about tambling.

I think it could have been a mix of the top 2.

Sorry but I don't believe it to be any of these three. Richie will always be 'haunted' by Franklin, because we will never be able to discuss his merits as a player without the spectre of Buddy looming in the shadows.

If Franklin had been a failure, Tambling would not get half the stick he does. The media beat up of their relative draft positions means it doesn't matter what Richie does, because unless it exceeds Franklins achievements it will never be good enough for some.

There are blokes drafted a lot lower than him that should be haunting him a bit more. Then there are the blokes who have been in the system half as long.

Should be focused on the fact that half his career is gone and he hasn't smelled team success. Should be looking at what he should be for us.

Just want his mindset right. He will be a tiger for the rest of his life because he is too good to be delisted but never will be worth anything as a trade.

if true, he really needs to get right over it, it was 6 bloody years ago

Everyone still goes on about it like it was yesterday. Due to the amount of people that go on about it and how many times it is reported in the media, it would obviously affect Tambling to some extent, he is only human. Disappointing really because he seems like a nice bloke and it's not like he is deliberately playing bad footy. He is disciplined and fitness/dedication isn't an issue, he is just struggling with confidence and consistency on the field. Send him to the hypnotist again.

God the newspapers can be annoying. That quote couldn't be more misconstrued and taken out of context. It goes from an innocent comment to a seeming attack. Ritchie is a good footballer, play him wherehe belongs up back so he can run in STRAIGHT lines an he'll perform like he did last year, no voodoo necessary

Did everyone else miss the fact that this was just Richo giving his opinion on the subject, rather than Richie saying it was the case.

No.

Molehill to mountain.

I don't know why people keep bringing this up.

Tambling is a completely different player, different body size & skills. Why do the press, and his detractors, keep comparing him to a 101kg full forward?

He is wtill getting games at richmond because Hardwick can see how much talent he has. We have alot of talent on the list, but a lot of attitude problems.

I tell you why Tambling , if this is his mindset, is barking up the wrong tree.

This means he has absolutely nothing to fear about the top 4 status and the fac t he is an important component of the RFC.

1. Richard did not make himself no.4 , the RFC did so this is not of his making.

2. If we had have got Buddy I doubt we would have got Cotch and maybe Martin as we would be hovering a little higher on the ladder with probably less chance of a premiership.

IMO because Tambling was picked at pick 4 it may have actually given a greater chance of someone like Deledio to get his hands on a premiership and help us tiger fans see a premiership sooner.

So IMO if Tambling is haunted he categorically has no reason to be whatsoever.

One final thing, Franklin did not do a great deal in the GF against Geelong, so for me the jury is still out on Franklin, Truth be told , except for age, I prefer Pod to Franklin so Tambling if there is any truth in this haunting, get over it because you are worrying about nothing!!

He was only the first player in 10 years to kick 100 goals in a H&A season. He did thid at 21. You will be lucky to see another bloke that young to kick 100 in a H&A season again

He kicked 7 in a final against Adelaide including the match winner with only seconds left at 20. Kicked 8 against Brian Lake in a Qualifying final in 08 at 21. He is only the reason we got to the GF and he has 325 career goals at 23. He has kicked over triple the amount of goals what Brown or Roo had at the same age comparitively

He is no good. The jury is still out.

I have read some stupid things in my life, but yours is top of the pile

Give me Pod any day.

Franklin is not even a ff.

He is more a CHF or up the ground.

JR is better on the FF line.

Hawks supporters go cry away , you fluked the cup and won't see it again for a good while@!!!

Either English isn't your first language or your not playing with a full deck of cards.

I think it might be the latter. Good luck with that :thumbsu:

A question to Tiger supporters, could Tambling develop into the sort of player Varcoe is becoming at Geelong?

Travis was drafted at #15 in 2005, and didn't play in 2006 sue to a chronic foot injury (indeed i think he was injured at the draft anyway). Played a few games in 2006, and then played about 18 games in 2007, missing the Grand Final. Now though, and despite a broken thumb suffered in pre-season he is looking fantastic, giving Geelong some much needed explosiveness and elusiveness in the forward line, and he is fit enough to play some time in the midfield too.

Travis is now 22, Tambling is only say 23 or 24 tops, wouldn't Richie want to look at Travis as an example of what he could become? Surely the skills Ritchie had as a junior couldn't have disappeared?

Perhaps though Travis was able to develop at a more rapid rate though at Geelong than Ritchie could be afforded at the Tigers. But still, it's something he could work towards.

Possibly, Tambling needs to get braver. Even today he pulled out of a contest. That should come with time when his body gets stronger.

Varcoe though is underated. If it wasn't for the injury concerns he would have gone earlier than when he was picked. Varcoe is not Tambling and vice versa. I think Tambling can improve his kicking from a mental perspective and get braver but I am not sure if his movement is as conducive to forward play than Varcoe. The problem with Tambling for me is , I for one, am not a hundred percent sure what position he should play. I am thinking may be, as wild as this sounds Tambling might be a deep FF(small obviously) with Riewoldt in one pocket and Astbury in the other with Tambling leading up the ground from deep.

Don't know. He has a place I think due to his talent but I am not sure how to fit him in a team with other talents complementary wise

he had some terrible disposals going to him. 4-5 missed him by alot. Was alright at times. But needs to run straight up the guts when he has the ball.

Alot of our blokes in our side are moving past him

Hard to see why Franklin would be bothering him when someone like Matty White is going past him.

All the incentive in the world today to want to prove himself to Hardwick. Hope he does.

Sick of some tiger fans constantly bagging him tbh. IMO we need to find him a position there and KEEP him there. Be it on the HBF, the wing or up forward. He seems to play 3-4 different roles during each game.

Didn't see that, but I did see him go in hard and put his head over the ball and win a free kick.
