Personally he would of been my last choice from the candidates, but the selectors obviously know better & are going for the long-term option. Would of liked to see Ponting captain Tasmania for a few more years before taking on the Australian captaincy. Looks like Punter will then succeed Waugh once he gives away the test captaincy ... unless this decison backfires. It will be interesting now to see which new talent makes Ponting's ODI squad with view to the 2003 World Cup.

Kane I would've even had Bevan before Ponting but it's a long term decision I suppose & if he stuffs up before the World Cup then Warnie will be there to lead us to glory ;).

And to think you doubted my judgement. ;) :D

Hmmmm...

He has been within a bee's d*ck of being dropped on occasions. He is abit like Mark Waugh IMHO, unfulfilled potential. Hopefully this will spur him on to greater heights.

Go Punter.

Punter would be my choice before Gilly, just to even outthe workload, but once again...... WHERE'S WARNEY.......

That said, good luck to Ricky.

I was originally leaning towards Gilchrist, but recently I was really hanging out for Warne for captain for god knows what reason. I never even thought about Ponting.

Nick, surely you don't think that Mark Waugh has failed to reach his potential over a long and highly successful career.

Another case of selectors not having a clue.

Had Lehmann been in the side as he should have been, he would have been a certainty for the job. He was easily the best man for the job. The only thing that stopped him was the selectors not having him in the side the past few years.

So once again, they've screwed up.

And as Nick The Pie Man said, Ponting has been close to being dropped quite a few times. Now he's captain.

We'll see how long it lasts.....

Yep,
i don't think he ever reached his true potential.
For a player of his class and elegance, he should have done better with the bat in tests over his career.
His highest score in tests is 153*, that is very very low for a player of his ability. Especially considering the amount of tests he has played.

Hey, just my opinion.

I think the ACB selectors have got this spot on about Ricky Ponting. He has all the qualities, the ability and I think he will get great support from the experienced players in Warne & Gilchrist, so it's definately a step in the right direction.

"Ricky Ponting for the next test captain - Yeah Yeah!!"

Nick, I can tell you are a real admirer of the skill and grace of Mark Waugh. I can also understand where you are coming from in this quote. It is a shame that we didn't see several innings of 200 plus from Mark however, going out to undisciplined shots is just part of the package with Mark Waugh. He took a long time to break into the the Australian team and he has been one of the best performers since then. His fielding in slips has been unparralleled. I genuinely believe that the selectors have made a big mistake leaving Steve out of the 1 day team, I hope they don't make the same mistake with Mark.

Gilly shoukd have got it
Mainly because I don't like Ponting because he reeks of arrogance. Gilly has done nothing wrong and should have got the gig

hmm i don't know where u got that from. He plays with confidence and maybe a tiny bit of arrogance and i think gilly is the same. Steve Waugh would be the king of arrogance IMO. BTW i thought Warney should've got it but ponting's my favourite player so i'm not really THAT fussed.

We agree on something?

What is the world coming to :D

It's obvious the selectors have decided to go for the long term approach, instead of the short term (World Cup) option of Gilchrist.

I think Ponting has been groomed for this position for a while, so I'm sure he'll be up to the challenge.

I heard he's not allowed to celebrate his appointment by going nightclubbing however :D

Well, if Mark isn't out of the ODI team, then he's packing his bags in preparation. I mean how badly do we want to fail in the medium term future by hanging onto every current player and never giving anyone new a go?

I know this is a ODI thread, but re M Waugh in tests. He has one score of 150+ when his brother has done it against every single test nation (that he has played against - ie. all except the Bangers). To never have one huge score is a shame and a disgrace IMHO.

M Waugh is #10 on the all time test list, quite exceptional really. But there is one statistic to me that has always stood out: of the top 50 highest run scorers in test cricket, M Waugh has the 2nd lowest best test score. most have scored doubles, and the only player below him is fat boy ranatunga. didn't he always talk of getting his test average up to 50? well considering his twin has done that i'm sure junior feels it vicariously.

anyway, who cares about ODI cricket anyway when compared to test cricket? i mean, we beat india last year in the one dayers. so what. as long as we win the test series v south africa, that's all that matters. rather have a fourth test match that be bored by SEVEN one dayers. i'm sure they could have made it a 9 or 11 game series if they really tried.

I'm with SeinDude on this one - reckon the selectors have got it spot on.

We had to look long term with this issue - appointing Gilly was no good, he said himself he wouldn't be able to do everything and captain as well - he would be burnt out in 2 years.

Warney is struggling to hold his spot in the side as it is, and although I think he is probably the best tactician in the side- chances are he won't be there for much longer, and then what, we have to appoint someone else? Same goes for Lehmann.

Ponting is obviously been groomed as next test captain - better for him to learn now in the inferior form of the game (let's face it, only the World Cup counts), and be ready for when Steve Waugh retires at the end of the Ashes campaign next year.

I wouldve preferred Gilly to take the captaincy but im not too dissapointed that Ponting got it

I reckon he'll rise to the challenge and good luck to him

Well Ricky's a good Rooboy so I have no complaints and felt that Steve's time had come until I read in the paper that he's a republican and ALP man so now I think his dumping is an outrage and an obvious plot by the silvertails to "get him"! Not sure what the silvertails think of Ricky though!

I was really not a fan of any of the option we had so I will just trust the selectors judgement on this one.Hopefully it will see him begin to fulfill the talent he posseses.Should be in the top 5 bats in the world not the top 5 most unreliable.

it was good he was named captain because hes a tasmanian and he was born in launcestoon, the same city i lived in, so they must be doing something right.

Iv'e been thinking about this a bit and this is how i see it.

I think Darren Lehmann should of got the job for 1-2 years (world cup) and then given it to punter. Thinking about Ricky Ponting as captain of a World Cup Champion is a bit mind bogling. Anywayz good luck to him im sure he'll do a fine job. :)
