Personally he would of been my last choice from the candidates, but the selectors obviously know better & are going for the long-term option. Would of liked to see Ponting captain Tasmania for a few more years before taking on the Australian captaincy. Looks like Punter will then succeed Waugh once he gives away the test captaincy ... unless this decison backfires. It will be interesting now to see which new talent makes Ponting's ODI squad with view to the 2003 World Cup.

Kane I would've even had Bevan before Ponting but it's a long term decision I suppose & if he stuffs up before the World Cup then Warnie will be there to lead us to glory.

He has been within a bee's d*ck of being dropped on occasions. He is abit like Mark Waugh IMHO, unfulfilled potential. Hopefully this will spur him on to greater heights.
Go Punter.

Nick, surely you don't think that Mark Waugh has failed to reach his potential over a long and highly successful career.
Nick, I can tell you are a real admirer of the skill and grace of Mark Waugh. I can also understand where you are coming from in this quote. It is a shame that we didn't see several innings of 200 plus from Mark however, going out to undisciplined shots is just part of the package with Mark Waugh. He took a long time to break into the the Australian team and he has been one of the best performers since then. His fielding in slips has been unparralleled. I genuinely believe that the selectors have made a big mistake leaving Steve out of the 1 day team, I hope they don't make the same mistake with Mark.Originally posted by NICK THE PIE MAN
Yep,
i don't think he ever reached his true potential.
For a player of his class and elegance, he should have done better with the bat in tests over his career.
His highest score in tests is 153*, that is very very low for a player of his ability. Especially considering the amount of tests he has played.
Hey, just my opinion.

Mainly because I don't like Ponting because he reeks of arrogance.

Another case of selectors not having a clue.
Had Lehmann been in the side as he should have been, he would have been a certainty for the job. He was easily the best man for the job. The only thing that stopped him was the selectors not having him in the side the past few years.
So once again, they've screwed up.
And as Nick The Pie Man said, Ponting has been close to being dropped quite a few times. Now he's captain.
We'll see how long it lasts.....
