Sadly, Mark wasn’t aware of his indigenous roots until after his playing days were over. Found out much later in life.

Yeah I was just reading about it. Thought his old man was an Afghan until he found out later he was indigenous.

Really sad news. RIP Mark Naley. He was a fantastic footballer for south adelaide, carlton and south australia. I reallly enjoyed his commentary on sanfl abc coverage back in the 90s as well.

Yes, was a great commentator as well. Came up with some great nicknames for players when commentating.

Remember watching him for the 1st time in a SA vs WA state game back in 1984.

Both sides stacked with players, about 20 in total who would be in the VFL in a couple of years. Always liked state games as a chance to check out the great players of the other leagues. SA had players of the calibre of Bradley, Kernahan, Leslie, Aish, McIntosh, McGuinness, Motley.

Naley was the standout because of the way he'd grab the ball and instantly hit top pace running past the opposition.

Sorry to hear about the passing of Mark Naley and the circumstances involved.

What a great no-nonsense footballer from a supreme era in footy and Carlton's history.

I should add South Adelaide too, has a street named after him not far from South's home ground.

RIP

Gutted that he Passed away. One of my Favourite Players that played for carlton that came From South Australia along with Stephen "Sticks" Kernahan and Craig Bradley.

I am a South Adelaide Panthers fan in the SANFL. The guy is a Legend at South Adelaide. Played 236 games for Souths from 1980-86 and 1991-3. Won a Margary Medal in 1991.

RIP to a Club great for Carlton and South Adelaide.

A genuine question Arr0w, but better hands than Diesel?

I still remember a game towards the end of his time with us, where he suffered an injury and ended up playing on one leg. I suspect it was against Melbourne, and from memory, he did pretty well!

That game was Round 11, 1990. There is great footage of the game on Youtube. We were 56 points down half way through the third quarter and lost by a goal. Naley, noticably limping, kicked 4 in about a 20 minute period late in the third/early 4th and 5 for the game. He got the 3 votes.

May he Rest In Peace.

I know we want our heroes to live forever and while I'm upset part of me is glad that he's out of his misery.

Brain cancer to the extent that Mark had it is absolutely horrific for everyone involved especially for as long as he had it.

My childhood, next door neighbor, best friends father died of it when he was 16. He fought over the same period of time. The most devastating thing was he knew every time he took a slide and lost the ability to do things he previously took for granted. I hope Mark didn't go through that.

Rest in Peace Nails. Your legendary status will be remembered forever. Condolences to friends, family and all Carlton and SANFL connections and fans

I posted on another thread as I didn’t want to intrude.
Sad news as he was much loved over here and was a ripping bloke

I was going to post how lovely it is to see so many non-CFC fans posting here. Please don't consider it an intrusion. When we lose our legends, in this case a Carlton and SANFL legend, your thoughts, passion, and insight is enormously appreciated. Lots of young posters here who wouldn't really understand Mark's impact on the game so the more who share the better.

Thanks for posting.

Heaver debut game (5 goals) often referred to on here.

One of my favourites during his time at the club, found myself barracking for South Australia during the 80's - 90's origin games because of the heavy carlton influence, thanks for the memories Mark, may you find peace after your battle.

Gee that’s a great photo. Sad in some ways as a lot of us over here thought Mots might be the best of lot.

And sadder now- farewell Nails, loved watching you play, even though you tormented my Hawks on more than one occasion. Just so skilful. And that State team ofthe 80s had a fair mosquito fleet when you threw in Plats and McGuiness.

Only in hindsight now I realise we haven’t heard much from him in a while, I had no idea. Too young.
