Well I'm stunned, I've probably seen more matches involving couch than any other player. When he was on, which was just about always, we were always a chance. More than that he seemed the sort of guy who didn't take it too seriously, the sort of guy you would want to go to watch a football match with as much as to see him play.

RIP Couchie!

Best wishes to his family and the GFC, he will be missed by all supporters.

As a South Australian, I have great memories of coming home after my junior footy on the weekend and seeing him play in the late 80's and early 90's Geelong teams, how good were they! He was also a friendly foe and great competitor in the State of Origin games.

In a world that would benefit greatly by more of his kind, it truly is saddening to lose the original. Respect shown by the greater football community is a measure of Couchy's sporting ability and infectious personality. Thoughts are with family, friends and teammates. RIP No.7.

Very sad news, Couch was a wonderful player in a great Geelong side, he was a good honest footballer, I don't recall him ever being dirty, he just let his talent do its talking, he was a worthy Brownlow winner in 1989. condolences to his family, friends and to his football club.

Grew up watching Couch play. Great reader of the play, great kick, and seemed like a genuinely great guy. Really sad, unexpected news.

Some players' thoughts are starting to filter through....

My favourite player of that era, and we had more than a few stars at that time… A gentleman who could always hold his head high, on or off field… RIP Couchy…

This was taken a mere 2 weeks ago.

I already posted this stuff in the main board thread earlier today but just thought I'd share it here. A couple of my favourite anecdotes.

In the first half of the 90's my brother, Dad and I had the 5, 6 and 7 Cats guernseys. I had Ablett's 5, my brother would rove around in Couchies 7 and my Dad had Barnesy's 6, because he was obviously taller than us and "played ruck".

Man, this one got me today, a lot of awesome memories flooding back. Couch might not be regarded as one of the greats, in AFL terms, but to a certain vintage of Geelong fans, he'll never be forgotten.

One of my all time favourite Cats. I still remember, vividly, Couch signing my headband during the '89 GF Parade. I was a bit younger then and my Mum slipped the barricade and got him to come over, haha. What a legend!

I'll have a quiet sip in his honour tonight. R.I.P.

Yeah it's hit me hard too, it's unexpectedly made me realise just how fond I am of that era, I'd say even more so than this recent era of flag success. Couchy almost epitomised that era, he had sublime skills (he's one of the best kicks we've ever had), he worked hard on his fitness so he could cover a lot of territory, had a determination to win, but at the same time he looked like he had a lot of fun on the field. Playing the game as it should be played.

He and Gazza seemed to have a great relationship. Couchy with the ball in the centre, a little flick of the head telling Gazza where to go and seconds later a 50 metre left foot bullet would arrive just at the right spot for Gazza.

Such a shame we won't be seeing that cheeky grin any more.

I remember running round before and after my little league games, pretending I was Couchy… Even though I had no left foot… A champ and gentleman of the game taken far too soon…

Walking out of Kardinia after a match heading to my car not long ago and I engage Couchy in convo who was happy to engage and share a joke.
Down to earth nice guy. Unlike most footballers or ex one, he acted like he was Joe Blow.
He was a joker in every sense of the word. A true gentleman that will be sadly missed.

I was/am a left footer and I modelled myself on his delivery, so much so I had virtually the same technique.
