News RIP Paul Couch

Growing up as a very young bloke in the late 80's/early 90's standing on Milk Crate on the Moorabool St Wing watching the little No7 dominate the Midfield and kick Bullet Passes to Gary Ablett Snr was a privilege.

To have known Paul Couch off the field was an honor there was never a time that if you saw him he was too busy to Chat about life, family and Footy

To the Couch Family and all associated with Geelong my Condolences

RIP Couchy - You Will be Missed

Paul Couch was a gem of a player with guts and sublime kicking skills, some of my best memories watching footy as a kid were sitting near the fence on the outer at KP watching Couch off a step pin point the great Gary Ablett snr with a perfectly weighted pass from his famous left foot that would thud on impact with GA's chest.

Obviously footy was only a small part of his life but his career no doubt brought joy to a lot of people and I'm happy to say I was one of them.

A bit late to this die to traveling. So sad to have lost one of those that was as good a bloke off the field who was also as great a player as he was on it..

Both sides of the white line lost today...
Vale Couchy..

Go Catters

RIP Paul Couch. I was not old enough to see u play, I pull out some of Dad's OLD footy dvds last night and loved watching a tru champion. And I do remember meeting u with my Dad in Colac when I was young, u were campaigning for politics I think, U and Dad spoke for about 20 mins,
He told us all about u and how good u were all the way home. Sadly missed and condolences for ur family.

I saw him play a lot of games - and he was a very good player indeed.

He was slow but hardly ever got caught - which proved you could be slow and still be a star. Really nice kick and just knew how to get the footy.

I recently watched a replay of a Vic V SA game - and the things he did at this, the highest level, was great. In fact all our players, Buddha, Gazza and Mansfield were on fire. In fact Mansfield could quite easily have been BOG !

I really liked the way Couchy went about it - hard and fair - and with a big smile.

Please ladies and gents go see your doctor and get a heart check up. Medicine is far too often concerned with treating people after the fact - just go and get a check up - as if Paul did maybe he would still be with us.

RIP you ripping bloke.

Thats the most important thing said in the thread

Like footballer or no footballer to die at 51 is so young - like it said he was returning from a bike ride from Apollo Bay -and im not familar with that area so i dont know strenous that is - but when you hit 45 if you dont have heart checks ups and your doing strenuous exercise - its a bit like that WA sports brodcaster Wally Foreman - in his 50s - he thought he was in reasonable nick - but went to the local gym - got on the treadmill - which can put enormous pressure on the heart - and had a massive heart attack - maybe if he did just say brisk walking he might be still alive .

I just happened to go to the doctor today and I asked about what heart checks can be done and he said there are basically none as angiograms are risky if there are no symptoms worthy of note ! He said there were some new tests but the Federal govt. does not allow on Medicare and so would cost $500 - and he was not sure how good they would be (as they were new). In other words he was saying there are no tests unless you have symptoms !!!

In other words if Paul Couch had asked for a heart check and had no symptoms indicating a possible heart condition - the doctor would have said there is nothing I can really offer - unless you have symptoms that indicate a heart issue - so you are probably fine !!!

I find it hard to believe there are no possible heart checks that do not carry risks or will cost you an arm and a leg to get.

Can anyone inform about heart checks - as this doctor may not be fully aware of the possible tests out there (well I hope not otherwise my doc is a quack !).

Mate - youd have your Cholesterol levels checked - both good and bad - and blood pressure etc - that would give you a fair guide if your going to have potential issues with your heart - and you need to take remedial action

This will be a touching farewell, you'd think.

Hope lots of you who are closer to the action can go and celebrate our erstwhile #7.

Yes I do this. I spoke with my brother today and he is having major heart surgery in the next 3 weeks. He tells me that the Doc can tell a lot from just listening to the heart and getting an Ultrasound can also help (as he has had a few of these). These are obviously not that expensive and maybe worthwhile for any one over 50.

And then I hear today that two well known Aussie musicians have passed away in the last 2 days (not necessarily heart issues) - but wow there seems to be a quite a few going before 70.

I have heard that genetics, like a lot of things that makes us who we are, are factors to heart disease and death.
Paul Couch had a barrel chest and I suspect as he aged, he would be one of those people that puts weight on their upper body which causes more stress on the heart as you age.
Listening to him when he was on the couch with Open Mike, you could hear him gasping for breaths after every sentence. A lot of people do this, even folks who look as fit as a fiddle. Perhaps there's more to that?
I wish your brother all the best.

Yes I wish him the best as well - 6 hours on the table but he has ensured he has the best cardiac surgeon and anaesthetist available in Brisbane (he is not a rushed job so had time to do this).

But because of this situation he has become a bit more focused on heart matters. Yes unfortunately genetics plays a big role - but there is not much you can do about genetics but lifestyle can be worked on. However either way it is best you know your situation as best as you can once you get to, say from 40 onwards.

I had a mate in my twenties whose father's family with all males dying from heart issues well before 40 - all 6 of them ! So his response was to go really hard at life - which would not have helped his cause - but it is understandable. I have lost contact so I do not know how things worked out for him. But genetics can be a real bummer.

You guys should wish him all well as he was the person that got me to barrack for Geelong (younger brother following in older brother's foot steps). My Mum's cousin, Harold Lambert, was named in the team of the century (20 th) for the Bombers - and everyone else in the extended family consequently are very keen supporters of the Dons. We are the misfits apparently ! :)

Harry Taylor on his fellow number 7:

A number can be more than an arithmetical value. A number can reflect spirit, passion, courage and tenacity.

Numbers are synonymous with our great game of AFL. We use them to rank, rate and inform. We also wear them on our backs, and in recent days we lost a legend of my club who wore the No.7 so well.

Mate, I'm not sure what the exact system is.
So I don't know what is allowed etc.

But twice I've gone to the doctor, and said at the desk "I have chest pains"
And they take you straight through.

And straight away I had an ecg. And then you get referred to a specialist for a stress test.
And yes that test costs $900 but is covered by Medicare.

So I don't know that using that would help the economy as a whole.
But if it helps you, just go do it.

I'm still in a fair bit of shock like so many others, no one expects this to happen but it goes to show of course sadly this does.I grew up watching Couchy also what a star how can you not loved the guy as a player & person true class on& off the field so sad R.I.P Legend.

Thanks for the response VC.

I was talking about preventative medicine re the heart. No pains, no issues - just want a check up just in case and my doctor told me there were none !!!!

Since someone here has said that cholesterol checks help - and yes I have one each year. My brother recommends a simple listening check and an ultra sound - both cheap or even free depending on your locale and doctor.

I like the idea of a ECG - can you get one if you are not showing any symptoms but are over 50 ? What does it tell you ?

The moral is make the most of life.

And yet many do not - and that is the shame of it. In my experience too many complain about things to people who cannot do anything to sort their issues. In other words there are quite a number of people who prefer to complain than go out and have the best life they can. Especially seeing we were born in a rich country with a heap of opportunities not found in most countries around the world.

Misery loves company they say. Life is too short not to have a bloody goody good time was my good friend's saying (a psychiatrist and died at 49 while working out on a exercise bike).
