51. That's insane for a fit bloke like him - I know, not really but..... Great player, 4 losing GFs including 95, the year he won another B & F. Family has to be in dreadful shock. RIP, cheeky Paul Couch.

He really was one of footy's good guys.
Terrific player who was one of Geelong Footy Club's greats.

A real salt of the earth type. Humble and a loving family man, they would be doing it really tough right now.

Very sad news ...

Apparently the Curnow family very close to him. Thoughts with Ed and Charlie too.

It's shocking how fragile and transient life is. Our lives are measured things and one day we can be in the best of health and the next, your life ends.

A few weeks back I was stunned to hear the news that a good friend who is a few years younger than my (then) 51 years of age had passed away suddenly from a suspected heart attack. My friend had had a hard life and was estranged from the mother of his little girl and wasn't able to spend any time with her because of that. But he was a very happy go lucky guy despite all his setbacks. The number of people who knew my friend was staggering and his and his brothers facebook page were inundated with messages of grief and condolences. There were also a large number of posts remembering all the good times people had with Matt.

It reminded me how important it is to keep in touch with all the people you know because one day, they aren't going to be there any more.

My thoughts go out to the Couch family at this, their time of loss and to all the friends of Paul who will be sitting around saying "it couldn't happen to him... he was so fit and healthy".

RIP Couchy. You would think a bloke fit enough to be out riding the Great Ocean Road would not drop dead of a heart attack at 51 but it reminded me of De Castella's. If my memory is correct, Robert learnt the importance of diet at a young age when his father who always trained with him and appeared to be very fit, was lucky to survive a heart attack.

Sometimes it's the fitness fanatics who are most at risk of heart attacks... just look at Douglas Adams... dead at 50 while out jogging.

When people die before their time I think it's a timely reminder that life is so short, and you only get one--so be kind to one another and do what makes you happy :hearts:
So true. A top footballer and Brownlow winner in a Geelong team which had some pretty handy players.

Condolences to his family and friends.

I posted this article on the main board.

It is humourous, but there is stuff in there about seemingly fit men dropping dead out of the blue. I'm late 30s and have an uncle who went exactly like Couch. I also do triathlons for fun and exercise every day. It is so easy to fall into the 'it will never happen to me' mindset.

Be mindful of it people. Get checked out.

RIP Paul. Always feared you as an opponent.
