Rising star - round 1

Daniel Rich. Just plain and simple the best player on the field. Robinson seemed to have gotten a lot of help.

Totally agreee with this, Rich was paramount in the Lions come back, played a hand in 3 goals, set up play in the middle. There was a period of play there in the 3rd quater where he was an absolute standout.

For any Essendon supporter saying otherwise, is hiding behnd the fact that they are spewing that you didnt pick him, and i would be too...

Robinson on the other hand, while he was impressive, piped up when Richmond were down and out, looked good in a big win, a close second for mine.

Im hoping Beamsy will show something this weekend..;)

Doesn't seem like you did too much research.... Cheney was much more impressive than Jetta- and nearly everyone else you mentioned. Perhaps you could post these stats you mentioned?

then why is the Crows' nomination Petrenko. Otten had a better game (19 stats vs Petrenko's 15)

Ok... Watched the Carlton, Adelaide, Brisbane, Hawthorn and Freo games over the weekend. The players picked from these games were based on the amount of excitement and anticipation the players brought out when they were near the ball.

Robinson had a physical presence that none of the others listed had. he also kicked three goals and chased hard.

Petrenko was more flashy than the solid Otten (although Otten did show some flashy footwork at one point).

Rich was deadly with his disposal and I don't think Brisbane could have won without his input.

Suckling played well in one of the top sides, which is why he was listed before players from teams expected to struggle (eg. Bombers, Demons etc.)

Jetta got the nod ahead of Hurley and Cheney because I didn't see the other games and wanted to include more options from other teams. As I am from WA, his heritage probably swayed me. He also had slightly better stats than Hurley, but admittedly Cheney was much better in this respect.

What I do find interesting though is that Rich got the rising star nod ahead of the other players listed (and not listed) yet Hurley made the AFL site's Team of the Week while none of the others did. AND before Bomber fans use this to criticise me further for his non-inclusion, if he was the wonder-kid people on this thread believe why is the "Other" option not fuerther ahead in the results.

Rich was very good, I think Essendon fans just question whether Hurley deserved it for the difficulty of his job.

And to say that we are spewing for taking Hurley in front of Rich is ludicrous.

People have knee jerk reactions to these polls, they often vote for the player they like the most before scanning the options.

Hurley and Rich were the clear standouts of round 1, with Robinson and Cheney behind. I don't think very many of you saw Hurley's match but he was kicking at 93% efficiency from field possesions (he messed up 1 handball from memory) but what these "stats" don't tell you is that he was doing the kick ins. Never have I seen a first gamer do kick ins for a club and kick it 55m's with perfection, he did not mess up one kick in. While doing all this he shut down Westhoff then got moved onto Treadre and beat him in a few 1 on 1's. This was in a team that conceeded a very large amount inside 50's and was getting dominated in the middle, Hurley did it with very little help from any other player too. I have not seen a better debut match from any defender.

Rich got it. Justice is served, as he was the best and was an integral part of his teams win.

I'm sure the others will get their noms throughout the season.

What? Did you not see Hurley play?

Yeah i saw Hurley play, i am basing my intial quote on the basis thats its as clear as daylight that Essendon need match winners, to me Hurley will be a good solid 10 year plus defender, where as Rich will be a match winner, something that is lacking down at Windy Hill.

Not to mention the fact that your midfield would have to be one of the worst in the league, the only reason i can think of that you decided to pick Hurley over Rich is the fact that you picked up Prismall, but im not sure hes the answer either.

Personally if i were i Bomber fan i would be spewing you passed on Rich, i compare it to the 1999 draft we had pick 1 and 7 one Fraser over Pavlich was hard enough, but we picked up a gun in Danny Roach at number 7, who played 1 game, just to give you boys an idea of who we missed out on.....

JOEL COREY
DARREN GLASS
ROBERT MURPHY
BRAD GREEN
PAUL CHAPMAN
DANIEL GIANSIRACUSA

Just to name a couple, if you guys are happy with Hurley over Rich then thats fine...

If we took Rich most clubs would be laughing at us saying we have weak KPP's and our defense is horrible. It's a lose-lose situation. By the way 6 clubs passed on Rich and of the 6, Essendon's Hurley has shown the most by a long way.

How anyone can say that we made a mistake getting Hurley is beyond me:eek:

Rich was a worthing nominee this week. Was a good round for young players, especailly like Petrenko's game on saturday.

Hurley as he played KP and took the kick outs without missing a target.

Kept Westoff goaless and then moved onto Tredrea and did the same in a team that lost by 7 goals.

Much harder playing KP and dominating than running around untagged in the midfield or backline getting easier kicks.

Nothing against Rich, Robinson or Cheney but they are easier positions to do well in.

Settle down - Tredrea was well past his peak 2 years ago. He is on one leg so no win there and Westoff is a kid himself trying to find his way.

So you think it is easier to punch the ball away from an old hack and young kid than for Rich to get possies against Kerr and Embly, or Robinson to kick goals against Newman?

Did you see Hurley play by any chance?

Firstly, a losing team will rarely get the nomination.
Secondly, I thought Robinson and Rich played better for the week. Not saying they will be better players, just saying for the week.
