Rivalries

bee, why are you the best in the business then ? Essendon are equal on flags and will soon be ahead so can you please tell us why youre STILL the best in the business ???

You just don't get it do you Easty?
The difference is we don't think we have to prove it by quoting facts and figures and bleating how we equalled this and that. We just say it because we genuinely believe it.
When I was 10 years old ( are you that old yet?) I can remember thinking how lucky I was to support Carlton and anyone who didn't I felt sorry for. Seriously!

Geez, can someone please explain it to Easty so he can understand!

Believe in yourself Easty and people will start having some belief in you!

Why do I get that feeling?

Hmmm. An interesting post that raises a few questions. So here they are.

1. My post wasn't directed at you. It was just poking some fun at Essendon (everyone should note that the more clued up Dons fans here didn't bother to respond....they were probably too secure in themselves, as they should be natch). So, either you are more paranoid than what any of us ever thought OR you think that you are the Essendon Football Club. So, is it paranoia or an identity crisis?

2. Does this mean that if at any time I do poke fun at Essendon, or heaven forbid, criticise them, does this makes it a direct attack on you?

3. Baiting you? This topic was started by someone else, an Essendon fan, who asked for responses. Sure the likes of Magpie Joffa and TigerTank mentioned you in their posts, but I thought they were rather kind in saying that they looked forward to your responses. You're a would-be-writer, and should be proud that you have such a following, so what are you complaining about?

4. Me not believing a word that I've written. You're a big one for evidence, so where is it? Since you recently called me a cynic, logically I should believe in my own cynical posts. So, am I a cynic who believes in what I had posted here (making you wrong), or NOT A CYNIC who was just making a joke (which makes you, um, wrong again)?

Anyway, my advice is for you to go and lie down on that couch over there and tell me about your relationship with your mother. We find that's the root of most people's problems.

I am right, Easty. After all I am an arrogant bitch Carlton supporter, how can I possibly be wrong?

You're missing the point Easty. As Bee said, you don't have to quote facts and figures and you don't just have to say it, you just have to believe it. We grew up with a strong Carlton. A team that could answer its critics on the field. A team that every other fan is wary of. A team that the football public expects to pop up at any time and win another flag. As fledging footy fans, our club has MADE us BELIEVE. It's not just arrogance, it is so much more. You can say whatever you want about your own team, we are not worried. We BELIEVE in the Blues so your beliefs are not a concern. Every footy fan should have such belief. If you have to justify your status, then you probably don't have enough faith.

Shinners, does that make Sheeds Ronald McDonald "the world famous magical clown"??

There seems to be a bit of a myth that Essendon fans just quote facts and figures (eg 16 premierships) to let everyone know they are the best.

Essendon fans don't do this, generally.

I DO THIS. Mainly because I know (and love) my stats, and I like using stats to prove stuff.

So don't generalise other Essendon fans, simply becasue I am the way I am. I think the footy club has let their results do the talking and the results are there for all to see!

No one takes any notice of what you say Easty. So , say what you like. Besides, everyone knows you don't know what you are talking about.

Getting back to the topic lol

...I think the biggest rivalry is Blues v Pies. Even when both or either side/s is doing badly, the match draws huge crowds and a lot of interest. It has been like this for a LONG time.

Here's my list of rivalries (not in order)
Blues v Pies
Blues v Bombers
Bombers v North
Dogs v Bombers
Dogs v West Coast (the biggest rival from my point of view)
Dogs v Crows
Dogs v Lions (almost as big as dogs v WC)
Crows v Port
WC v Freo
WC v Bombers

Rivaliries come and rivalries go. Here's some of the great ones from down the years :

1900's - Carlton v South Melbourne, Fitzroy v Collingwood, Essendon v University (yes - true !)

1910's - none really, the demise of University and the war killed off most football activity

1920's - Fitzroy v Collingwood (again), Collingwood v Richmond

1930's - South Melbourne v Collingwood, Richmond v Geelong

1940's - Essendon v Carlton, Carlton v Geelong

1950's - Melbourne v Collingwood, Geelong v Essendon

1960's - Saint Kilda v Collingwood, Carlton v Collingwood, Carlton v Richmond

1970's - North Melbourne v Hawthorn, Carltyon v Riuchmond, Carlton v Collingwood

1980's - Essendon v Hawthorn, Carlton v Hawthorn

1990's - West Coast v Essendon, Carlton v Essendon, North Melbourne v Sydney, WEstern Bulldogs v Brisbane

2000's - ????

see ? - its a pretty faliceous arguement to say one particular rivalry is more potent or passionate than any other. Some have endured the test of time like Carlton v Collingwood for example but does that really make this rivalry better than any of the others ?

I know that Collingwood and Fitzroy enjoyed a VERY bitter rivalry in the 20's - this was probably just as passionate as the hatred that Carlton and Essendon have for each other these days.

Just enjoy the rich social history our game has, stop trying to button-down all these 'absolute truths' all the time because they don't exist.

cheers

I for one was not saying who i think the biggest rivals are, as if it was a fact. It is merely my opinion...it is neither right nor wrong!

biased ????...probably....

I would say the biggest rivalry is Adelaide V Port.

1. It has the "hatred" built up by significant events in the past (1990) ...including off field which adds some spite

2. It consumes a whole state. Collingwood Carlton means a lot to those supporters but supporters of other clubs in Melbourne have a passing interest...mainly in the size of the crowd.

3. It has only been going for 4 years but it is built on the historic Port vs everyone else in the SANFL going back 100 years

4. In the 4 years they have played 8 times...4 wins a piece. It has also been 1 win and 1 loss each in each of the 4 years.

what it needs is some finals and grand finals...but essentially the state stops twice a year to watch the game and they would fill 100,000 stadium if they had one.

but then.......

Bee, you can believe what you like, but in the absence of some proof it is nothing more than a personal opinion.....Delusional Carlton fans seem to THINK they are the centre of the Universe and insist on forcing this opinion on us all, a trait instilled by possibly the biggest tosser in AFL history (Big Jack). It is an indictment on all Carlton fans who actually follow such a man (and I use that term lightly) and share this ugly trait.

Personally, I couldn't give a rats left testicle who the greatest rivalry in AFL is! All I know is that I have very little time for Carlton and their arrogant supporters.

Oh no we are so hurt by your nasty, nasty words. We have been put firmly in our places.

Quite obviously our intention to piss people like you off is working.

Come on TD, the season is just around the corner and I am just warming up.

Hugs and kisses! We love you too!

Here's a thought

There are some rivalries in English soccer where the clubs rarely play each other - with havig separate divisions, promotions and relegations etc.

My old club, Huddersfield town has rivalries with all it's Yorkshire neighbours but the biggest is argualby Leeds United. But they rarely play each other - and the rivalry goes on.

One example is a link on an unnofficial huddersfield website page - 'Everything you need to know about Leeds United' - Goes to a totally blank page.

Look at Tranmere, on the other side of the Mersey from Everton and Liverpool but there would have been much rejoicing when they beat Everton in the FA Cup.
