The previous guy I used to work for was a member of Riverview Church. I jsut got this in my e-mail, sums up my disgust at these Pentecostal/Evangelical fads.

FINANCIAL LEADERS MEETING
Date: Friday 16th March, 2007
Time: 7.00pm - 10.00pm
Venue: Mr X + Mrs Y's Home
Address:
Cost: $30- pp (Meal & Drinks provided) - WTF!! Charging $30 for dinner at someone's house??

Dear Financial Leader & Partner,
Hope this email finds you well.
Just a reminder of the purpose and process behind our Financial Leaders gatherings. Our Financial Leaders are those who have the wherewithal, passion and courage to give $5000 and above in the previous financial year and those who commit to $5000 and above in the current financial year to the Riverview Trust, over and above their first 10% giving.

We gather our Financial Leaders together regularly for Phil and the Leadership Team to thank them, inspire them, encourage them and receive feedback from them so they can continue to serve God with their gifts. At this meeting Phil and the Leadership Team will be taking time to encourage our Financial Leaders. This is also a unique opportunity for you guys to get to know our other Financial Leaders..

Look forward to seeing you there.
Warm regards,

xxxxxxx

Remember to tithe 10% of your income, the church needs air conditioning and the preacher needs a mercedes.

I remember reading a Q&A on some fundy evangelical site once that went something like this:

Q: I am a struggling college student, and I cannot afford to pay for my rent and bills as well as my course books on my current income if I pay the tithe. Is it OK for me to reduce the amount I pay in my tithe each week until I can afford to pay it, and pay back the amount when I eventually graduate and have a job?

A: No. The money you are withholding is God's money, not your money. If you do this, you are stealing from God, and that is a sin.

Essentially, it was "we don't really care about how tough you're doing it, give us the money now".

Absolutely amazing.. now we don't believe in miracles... until we see one... but ain't it such a coincidence that we were planning the annual BigFootyBelieversBall in exactly the same street, same night, same time?

Gee I don't know how these pious poonces will like the "RoughRudeNastyNaughty" theme especially the loud play versions of Rodney Rude & Billy Connelly tapes and the special music of Kevin Bloody Wilson... or the grog up session? Do you you think they would mind copulation on the footpath between consenting adults?

Oh well! we wouldn't want these deluded maniacs ruining our fun may have to change the venue?

Hey why don't we scrape together & join in... nah forget it... we don't need their gimmic "free included in $30" white pointy hat or the little incense ern... they can shove it where it fits!

The weak willed idiots who follow them should be fined another 20% for being gullible enough to believe the hocus pocus they dispense.

The thing is, you can't get into this club by donating 10% of your income, it's 10% of your income PLUS at least $5,000. The guy working before me would have been on around $170 - 200,000pa. The mind boggles at this scam.

Just as gullible as those of the Muslim persuasion and arguably all other religious followers. When if ever will they all realise its a waste of time and money.

This is the most concerning FAQ for mine.

Why do we have a Miracle Offering Weekend?
Having a weekend dedicated to the finalisation of giving commitments to the Riverview Trust gives people participating an opportunity to complete their personal commitment for that financial year. It also enables those who choose to give a lump sum on a once-off basis, the opportunity to do so before the end of the financial year.

I don't see what the controversy is...... don't most churches of most christian denominations ask for at least 10% of your income for tithes? >,>

<shrug> for me, If I had a choice of giving 10% to a church or burning 10% of my income, I'd burn the income.

It's the fact that it preys on people who think that by giving money to the church they are buying favour with the lord.

what was the term martin luther objected to? buying indulgences? i dont think they have gone down that far yet, although does a mercedes count as an indulgence?:D

Meh,if they want to tithe good luck to them.Prefer that to the Mormons and Jehovahs who come knocking each week trying to sell me the 'good word'

"Judge not lest you be judged." (sorry don't have the bible reference no.) :D

Follow in the footsteps of John Safran.... have your trusty copy of Origin of Species handy and try to convert them to Atheism.

Granted they're more blatant than most, but its nothing different from alot of other churches ie: do good works and believe in God and you'll go to heaven

However if they want to enter into the industry of financial advice, they should be treated the same as secular companies and not protected under the shroud of religion laws

I have nothing against donations if they're doing good works but there should be more transparency on how churches spend their moolah.

Interesting point this. I work in financial services, and I went for a job interview in the CBD not long ago - this group had an office next door to the "Catholic Church Insurance Company"

It is pretty transparent. Most of these Pentecostals follow a US bible belt TV style evangelical model.

Seems like ( given number of those disgraced) ...most of it goes on lear jets, the high life, & hookers!
