Game Day Rnd 4 - Carlton v Bulldogs Game Day Discussion

Not all doom and gloom, positive out of tonight is we didn't allow it to become a blowout albeit their lack of rotations on the bench.
Sumner and Plowman were fantastic, Lamb hunted the ball and Philips worked very hard all night, we win that Menzel trade big time because I think Sumner and Plowman will become elite.

Our big guns were pretty quiet tonight which in my eyes is a positive.

For next week I think we send Kruez to the 2's to send a messege, perfect time to do so, coming up against a Sandilands-less Fremantle.

Bring in Jaksche and keep him in the forward line.

Unlike Fremantle we didn't roll over and die against Bulldogs which is a big positive.

On a whole different note... How shit were the umpires tonight!

Lachie Plowman, we have another defensive slot filled if that's any indication. All after an injury interrupted pre season & 1 and a half games in the twos.

Plowman, Weitering, Doc, Zach, Casey...makings of a very strong backline that. Need one more big bloke, JGM would be a bonus. Plowman was excellent IMO, in our top 6 on the ground.

Also very pleased with Sumner, again coming off serious injury & bugger all twos footy. Kicked 2, had a dip, got some pace about him and appears to kick it well.

Phillips was pretty good for 3 quarters, needs to build fitness though. Best game so far. Lamb was ok also. The GWS4 had a pretty handy night all things considered.

They're a very handy side, a 6 goal loss is nothing to get upset about at this stage. Lots of positives actually.

Completely agree.
That is a good back 5...and i'd say our 3rd tall defender wouldnt be at the club right now but put in another good tall and thats a great back 6.

Phillips has some weaknesses but shows some good signs as well.

Sumner has skill and poise that was very obvious.

Our kids and new guys are all showing glimpses so we should be happy with that.

uhhhhh.

Scott Thompson - 6
Rory Sloane - 6
Jaryd Lyons - 4
Sam Jacobs - 4
Rochard Douglas - 4
Matt Crouch - 4

Yeah not so much an over-reliance on Cripps as a lack of depth. We had 11 players win at least 1 clearance. Adelaide (who just beat clearance kings Sydney in this very stat) had 16
Yeah that's very true, in fact after my comment I was looking at the stats again and thought to myself that Curnow having 5 and Kerridge, Wright having 4 each is probably about right, but the clearance numbers to other players drops right off after that.

Still, it seems we truly lift in the midfield when Cripps starts getting heavily involved and it's no coincidence for mine. You shut him out - and the rest just aren't good enough to pick up the slack. It's like Judd all over again and that worries me a bit.

Trigger happy mods...I make one thread a year and its deleted. A singular discussion of Gibbs, perhaps our highest paid and potentially best rated player, is entirely valid.

Why bother contributing?

Just looked for what you were talking about. Found this:

I suppose all post match threads will be taken as an emotional response, and perhaps this is. Still, I can't help but marvel how a guy with such immeasurable talent gets by on so little effort.

His inside work has dried up completely this year, 70% if his disposals this year are uncontested yet I can't recall a single damaging piece of play, and I've yet to see him break out of more than a light trot. He should be at the absolute peak of his powers, yet he will rightly come under selection scrutiny this week...least if Bolton is consistent.

So disappointed in the player he has become.

Could easily have gone in the match thread, the 2016 list management thread, his player thread.

Seemed like just a negative thought bubble with no real analysis, that was just going to turn into a player bashing thread. I agree with the decision and appreciate the public mod shot instead of the friendly PM query.

I didn't think Rowe was as bad as some are making out. I keep getting Graham and Kerridge muddle up as they look the same and do the same amount of work onfield.
Agree. Although, I think people's issue is his inability to finish the job. Be it excellent body work only to drop the mark or good positioning only to shank the kick.
Fear he's too old to change this now. Hope I'm wrong.

Docherty was our best imo, great start to the year. I like the look of Plowman and I thought both Lamb and Sumner were good in a game that would have been very difficult as a small forward. I think the Plow and Weitering will form a very good alliance in the back half for some time. Our mids were pretty bad.

Our defence held up well considering how bad our midfield was...need to hit this years draft hard for top quality true mids.

Kreuz is out of form...I'd like to see us get creative like the dogs.

Drop Kreuz and Casboult.
Bring in Jones & Jaksch.

Ruck: Phillips, Rowe second ruck
Forwards: Jones & Jaksch
Defenders: Weitering, Plowman & Rowe

This x 1000!

In the last 5 weeks in the 2's Jones and Jaksch

Have formed a good combo. Would definitely like to see them brought in together. I think it would be good for both their confidence.

As for Cas, we have gone WAAAYYY past making excuses for him. Time to say Levi, kicking for goals is a forwards job. If ya can't do that, then you can't play seniors.

People need to realise Casboult's misses not only cost us on the scoreboard...it saps the energy and confidence of the other players in the team as well.

Also, many times the midfield has done a great job and delivered a good F50 entry that deserves a goal, only for Cas to kick it out on the full...its not good enough.

Needless to say as we do improve we can't go into a final with Cas up forward....pressures goes up 10 fold and bad goal kicking is bad football will cost us big.

The signs from the kids are great - it's the rest that we have to worry about.

Others missed easier shots.

But it's all Levis fault.:D
He takes a mean mark Levi, but he has zero confidence kicking. Last week he was about 45 or so out, instead of taking hes time and taking a shot, he handballed to another player who took the shot. That was it for me, you can't be a forward and have no confidence kicking.

There easy to tell apart Kerridge is the one that actually moves.

Graham is the one who does a great impression of a potted plant, and moves as fast as one.

Does anyone know the details and severity of Thomas's injury. Was just starting to get some form. Would be very disappointing if it was serious.

Also I really thought casboult was making progress last year with sav Rocca as kicking coach.

From what I see, ball drop is too high, surely someone down at Carlton could tell him to lean over as much as possible and drop the ball as close to his foot as possible.

I mean have a look at plugger and dunstall's kicking action. Hunchbacks of nostradame

Wow ... So torn on this game.

Lots of positives - Plowman, Sumner, Lamb, Curnow ... Liking the young group we have ... And well done to Daisy over the last couple of weeks - having a dip.

Negatives ... Our number 1's ... Murph, Gibbs, Kruez (Weits excluded)

Also - passage of play when Sumner got thumped ... Who flew the flag ... All the young blokes, no 'leader' in sight. If it was the Hawks - tell me that hodge, Lewis etc wouldn't have been there.

Some blokes just simply aren't leaders no matter how much we want them to be. Having leadership thrust upon them can also be detrimental to their own game.
